Not a step missed, thanks for sharing. Was debating on whether or not to buy the entire lower control arm or just go with a ball joint. Given i'm only working with a driveway, i'll just cough up the cash for the lower control arm assembly.

Excellent method of explaining techniques of the trade. I've been a mechanic for more than 40 years (now retired) and I couldn't have done a better job. Cudos!

I may have just dispensed with the 90 degree zerk and put in a standard grease zerk. Nice job Sir. All done with no blowtorch and no PB blaster too. Well done.

TIP: Most of us don't have a lift which makes it a lot easier. When installing the ball joint into the upright, make sure both front wheels are supported off the ground otherwise you will be fighting the sway bar. Also set the steering straight ahead or you will be fighting the steering arm trying to move the upright.

I have a 2007 Patriot and already had both ball joints replaced at only 57k miles by a mechanic and then had to replace the entire lca on the driver's side later because the bushing failed at the rear of the lca and it was hitting the frame. I suspect the ball joints are failing again so I purchased two new lca's from Moog. I feel confident after watching your video I could replace them myself and save money. The key is having all of the right tools. Also, I didn't hear you mention in your video but won't you need a front end alignment after completing this job? Thanks for sharing!
@Tomsfoolery.5 жыл бұрын
Yes, an alignment is recommended after this repair.

Thanks for the detailed video! Can I do this with the car up on ramps, or do the wheels have to be suspended?
@Tomsfoolery.6 жыл бұрын
The wheels must be suspended.

Not to sound rude, seriously, but you should take yours to a mechanic. If you do this wrong it could kill someone or many.

Want to do this. This weekend what is the part number for that ball joint you have used and where was it purchased at.
@Tomsfoolery.5 жыл бұрын
I don’t remember the part number but it was purchased at Auto Value
@alonsomonarrez17795 жыл бұрын
I bought a ball joint from autozone I was told by a mechanic that individual ball joints wont fit control arm and it would be best to buy the whole control arm. But I dont need the control arm ball joint is the only item wrong with it. New control arm 225$. Have you had issues with just replacing the ball joint or it has always gone well.

2 or 3 whacks with a BFH would have gotten that out quicker. I always do it that way and it works great. You only do it if the balljoint is junk though, obviously. Good video though.

I saw your post on twitter, subbed! We'll meet these crazy new YT requirements someday. :( PS. I have a 2011 jeep compass like yours but its 2WD and silver, it's been making a popping sound when I make right turns do you think it might be the ball joint?
@Tomsfoolery.7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your support! Yes, the balljoint would be suspect. Do you hear the noise just occasionally or consistently? Also, is it more likely to make the noise when accelerating? If so, the outer CV joint is bad on one of your axle shafts.
@Daddydaughtergamer7 жыл бұрын
I hadn't noticed if there is a difference depending on if I am accelerating or not but I will pay attention to that next time. It's not constant, but it is definitely frequent. We tried to make a little video about replacing the cabin air filter back in August. Valentina wanted to show her friends that she could do it but it ended up being that we bought the wrong one, plus it was 100+ outside and that kind of killed the mood :)
