As a former owner of 4 Discoveries I now own a 79 dual cab. I wouldn’t pay the increased price for the Discovery 5 as I saw no value in why I had to pay $20,000 more than the previous model for lesser features? Landrover no doubt lost a heap of customers on the latest model! It’s less practical & way to expensive. Even after being offered a significant discount by Landrover on the purchase price I still stepped back in space & time & bought the Landcruiser 79 dual cab & I love it.😊

Having a swag in the bed of a ute and a 2 inch lift isnt overlanding. Overlanding is more about living out of your vehicle which just isnt good with a ute unless you have a demountable camper. Trust me the Aussi "overland" scene sucks compared to the rest of the world.
@funkyfedaykin
@funkyfedaykin 5 жыл бұрын
@@willyd-adv I was thinking of those that are kitted out with off-road gear with custom cabinets on the back and often a rooftop tent + awning. Dual cabs seem to be popular firstly because they are easily customised (as Andrew noted in the video this is a key thing for such vehicles) with plenty of aftermarket options. Next they are intended to be versatile off road and comfortable on road. They're not prohibitively expensive, and they're often able to be used as a regular vehicle when not overlanding.
@macmurfy2jka

The designers at jeep were not worried about making the Grand Cherokee customizable because the have the Wrangler for that. A Wrangler can just about be built from the chassis up from aftermarket parts. It’s really incredible actually. There is an entire economy over here in the states that is based on Wrangler modification.
@loganholmberg2295
@loganholmberg2295 5 жыл бұрын
It's still pretty customizable. Sure it's not a rock crawler like a Wrangler can be but I know a lot of people that Mopar out their Cherokees and Renegades cause they are comfortable to drive for long periods of time in the muck with their families and be a primary car at the same time. You would be surprised at the aftermarket options you can get on Cherokees, and even Compasses and Renegades. I'd take any of them over the SUV options Ford or Chevy are offering nowadays. Are they as off road worthy as a Jeep? No. Can you turn them into pretty capable offroaders thanks to the Mopar aftermarket? Yes.

Jake Lunniss Trust me, i get that.the family owns a 2013 Jeep Grand Cherokee (WK2) I was just pointing it out for Andrew. Believe it or not the, Jeep WK2 only has 2 more cubic feet of storage than the Jeep Wrangler Unlimited (JKU). And the JKU is like only three inches shorter than the WK2. On paper, at least, the two vehicles are in the same class. Owning a 2008 JKUR, the WK2 is a much better general purpose (read on road/off road) vehicle than the JKU. Thats why I pointed it out. I would much rather be driving a WK2 daily in account of the shorter wheel base alone. I have had lots of trouble going from my previous vehicle to the JKUR for that reason alone. But i have this vehicle because that’s just how things worked out. If Andrew does buy the WK2, i hope he buys an aftermarket bumper that improves its angle of attack. With the current front facia there just isnt great wheel access on account of all the air dams.

@@macmurfy2jka Good point. But then allot of the mods people do is go to a sturdier bumper. I know I would just to put a good winch on it. That's what I really like about the new RAM Power Wagon os that you can get a winch from the factory. I wish they did that on some of the Jeep models. I know they offer a bumper on the JL that can fit a winch but I don't think they offer a winch from the factory do they?

The Pajero is a highly underrated 4WD , very reliable, but the 3.2 diesel with the Aisan auto, Mitsibishi Superselect transmission is the pick, a mandatory 2 inch lift kit, All terrain tyres and it will go as far as any other of the best. Landrover and Jeep have had appalling reliability and build quality over the years and are not popular at all in remote outback Australia or for that matter most of Africa,

I've had my 2009 NT Pajero 3.2 common rail for quite a long time, it has the updated Aisin 5 speed auto, I have found it very very good off road and tow a 2.3 ton caravan with it, now with over 300,000km on it and working it as hard as ever I have a lot of respect for it, it's honest, reliable and very easy to live with every day, it's my fourth 4wd and by far the best, to me it's not too fancy but more on the practical side.

I agree with everything you said Andrew great review, however being a pajero owner i do have one hack for all the kids playing at home, if you buy a pajero with a rear differential lock, it turns off the Traction Control making the beeping nul and void. with a few modifications like my gen 4 bash plates, lift, bar with winch and 33 inch muddies, it is very capable. and with it approaching 270k km it has only had a new alternator due to my mud fetish ;)

yeah mate think that would just go to prado. cant beat a good ole toyote. from one brexan to another we know that rover aint winnin' in reliability, it didnt in the 90s and its even more complicated now. jeep is a chrysler brand with typical midrange american reliability, although a supercharged 6+ liter v8 engine could wear a bit on the drivetrain. mitsubishi is a bit of a mystery but should be okay. i have myself a 2007 lexus gx470 (a prado with a bit of luxury inside) and its fantastically reliable. the 4.7 liter v8 puts out more power than i know what to do with and center locking diff, traction control, and fantastic low range makes the limestone around here seem a bit less jagged.

They've all become a lot more complicated and impossible to fix. They could be just as durable as the older ones (doubtful), but the difficulty and cost of maintenance and orders of magnitude higher. Toyota is the only one still doing well in this category.

Andrew i 100% agree on everything you said. however I drive the new Toyota Prado everyday for work in N.T outback Australia and i actually dont mind the interior. (a bit bland compared to the others but practical. Which is what think Toyota was going for in its offroad use.) I absolutely agree that the interior of the Discovery looks better, but lets be honest id never take that vehicle off road (especially with those low profile wheels.) furthermore trying to maintain that interior with the soft leather dash etc would be a nightmare. The Jeep Cheroke, in terms of power performance and price range with all of its fruits it ticks all the boxes but and this is a big but.....their notorious name for unreliability. and again agree i think the mitsubishi Pajero is abit outdated. Love this Video, keep up the great work, enjoy your trip in NZ

Hi Andrew Great analysis regarding those vehicles. I own a Prado 150 (2015) and like you I too feel the interior's a little boring, it's true Toyota has had this model for ten years, one would think that would be plenty time for to make some meaningful refresh to that very bland interior. When I was in the market for a go-anywhere SUV I watched and red many many reviews and with a conviction even without a test drive, I already knew I wanted a Prado Landcruiser. Now from my experience of owning the Prado 150 (4yrs now) I believe the fundamentals of the Prado AKA "Landcruiser" is mostly a sound and reliable vehicle. Yes it's true this Toyota is still Mr reliable = Landcruiser" yes, its for this reason I am happy with my vehicle choice, it has not failed me yet 🤞.... 80% on road & 20%off road

I have been wondering why nobody makes a SUV like a 4-runner but with more headroom, I'm talking around $50k or less. i know Nissan makes sthe Armada....but hat's not really used for off-road and it doess't have that off-road look. And I know Lexus makes the 470 and 570....but they have that luxury look and people don't really use them for off-road.

you should review the duster, it does stand out from its competitors, it has a locking centre diff, a very low 1st gear and a very utilitarian design, it is so much more accessible to people who don't have land cruiser type money, there is also a huge modification community all around the world. Would also enjoy seeing the fiat panda cross and the new Suzuki Jimny. Budget overlanding!

Great video Andrew... one mistake though, @2 minutes... the facelifted discovery got the 300Tdi, as it already had the 200

Andrew, I have followed and enjoyed your work for quite some time. I have however never seen you mention the VW Touareg? Apologies if I have missed it, but do you not rate it at all or is there any reason you have not done a review on it? I am specifically referring to the model with terrain tech ( low range, centre, and rear diff locks)?

Hands down I’d buy the Discovery 5. The rear end is a bit ugly (though you probably get used to it) but the rest is gorgeous. It’s super capable with the best engine and best 4WD system by far. It’s the nicest on-road and nicest off-road and has the best interior. As you say (and this is a huge huge thing) you sit in the cabin and that’s what you see and feel all day - can’t beat the interior (though I’d get cream or white and never dark colours eugh). You don’t drive from the outside. The Jeep is nice inside too but the Land Rover is better - the other two are bland and disgraceful inside. I’ve driven a Discovery 5 for 2 days and it’s hands down the winner. Wish I could own one now but my current Land Rover is a work of art and suits me just fine for now.

I enjoyed that. I know you cant get them in the UK, (the new Y62) but I'd love to get your overview on the Nissan Patrol. Same as in the video, past to present. It's the one vehicle you never seem to have anything to do with. Thanks.

We have a 2006 Prado 2.7L V6, & we drive it on road 99% of the time. It has a significant body roll when driving fast.

Andrew great video as always . Also noticed in the description that you referred to the US spec Discovery as the LR5. They stopped that naming scheme, it’s just Discovery again. And I think you need to drive a Discovery 2 again. Mine has a CDL and traction control, so it’s really good off road. Even better than my D1.

Great review, I would love to see a review on the Prado 90 vs Prado 120. I have just bought a 2002 Prado 95 D4D auto. I did look at a 120 & also Grand Cherokee 05 but didn’t because of reliability concerns.
