We finally retired our 2006 120 series V6 4.0 (6-speed manual) in Feb at 562,000km. I bought this vehicle from my employer at the end of the 3 yr novated lease, it was my company car equipped to mine spec and used all day every day in northern W.A. I did over 100,000km between the mines in that period, then it was my wife’s car for 15 years, averaging ~30,000km p.a., cross-country outback kilometres with approx half of that on unsealed dirt roads. We used the vehicle for extensive continent-wide travel on our 6 week holidays, towing a camper with all the fruit. The lubricant & filter service intervals were halved from new (every 5,000km) and stuck to religiously. The suspension was replaced every two years, it had 3 clutch replacements, several complete brake overhauls and I lost count of the number of new windscreens on the insurance. Full cooling system overhaul every 100k with a new water pump, tensioner, belt. I added a rear locker and twin motor air compressor in 2009 which was bloody awesome. The ONLY original factory component that failed in all that time was the alternator at ~420k, primarily because we pushed it a bit too hard on two auxiliary AGM batteries run through a Redarc charge controller. Luckily it failed slowly so the battery light would come on intermittently - replaced before it became a proper problem. Re-gassed the aircon a couple of times. We hit roos, wallabies, and a Suzuki Swift…. We drove through the worst sand, Tassie bog holes, High Country rock hill climbs, everything we threw at that truck it handled with ease. Eventually the corrugations started to take their toll and there was that much bulldust through the vehicle that we decided it needed to be completely stripped and rebuilt. But the main reason we retired the car was because I retired from the mine and consequently lost the spouse fuel card benefit that was part of my package! Because if there’s one thing about the old V6 truck, it sure likes a drink… when we drove across the Nullarbor with the camper into a strong headwind we would typically see 25L/100km! Okay that was at a steady 110km/h, but still… The average fuel consumption over the life of the vehicle was 16L/100km. The vehicle is parked up in Denmark waiting for strip down & restoration by my eldest son at some point soon enough. It’s a bloody tough truck and it will be interesting to see what he does with it.

Owned a 2012 GXL for about 5 years and put over 200k km on it. Excellent re-sale. Biggest issue we had was the D4D stickers on the “D” pillars faded and cracked. Replaced under warranty, would you believe.

My Dad owns a 1999 V6 3.4 Litre Prado GXL and in the 6 years he has owned it we have never had a problem with it.

Prado's are super rad, my dad used to have one when I was growing up(the generation before this) and the storage under the arm rest was actually cooled. I legit think more cars should have that. (pretty sure the top end ones of these also have em.) But yea great car for family road trips, speaking from years of experience.

Awesome review as always! The steering wheel on my 2017 also seemed to wear very quickly on top, Toyota told me it was a batch of bad coating from the factory affecting a small number of vehicles and replaced it no questions asked. Great service.

Awesome video! Thanks for being so thorough...I'm in Bahrain and finding a car with a legitimate service history is really difficult. Maintenance here seems like more of a suggestion than a real mandate...we've got to be really careful when buying, particularly because of the extreme heat, salt air, and humidity. Rubber doesn't stand a chance here over long periods.

love my 2016 prado gxl , had it for 12 months now , just put in a android head unit , and now it seems so up to date , it has a bull bar and driving lights , i've had fords and holdens all my life up to this car , but god i love driving this, its just great vehicle , feel like i could go anywhere, and if i want to get a boat, caravan or trailer, i know it's got the job covered , great review you did as well , thanks.

2012 Altitude with 160000km. Second owners. Has been all over WA, on all the beaches, up the roughest tracks in Kimberleys, across the desert, and always towing 2T camper. Give it a wash and vacuum when we get back and good as new. Daily grind during the week. Zero issues aside from regular maintenance. Its not exciting but its sturdy work ethic is endearing enough!

Hi, enjoyed the video, my additional advice is check oil levels and look into the engine oil filler cap. Rubbers and struts are cheap fixes compared to a bogged engine from no servicing.Also make sure you do a full emergency stop in it to test the ABS and that it pulls up straight.

I had a 2001 RV6 Prado, put a 2 inch lift, bull bar, snorkel, winch and GoodYear Wrangler muddies on her and she was unstoppable. It also had decent range with factory fuel capacity of 159 litres. Progressed to a GXL V8 100 series and now have a V8 TD 200 series. You just can’t go past Toyota 4wds, they are the ducks guts. 👍🏻🍺🍺🍺🇦🇺🇦🇺

bought 2018 GXL (with manual dpf switch), 80000 km, no issues. never needed to use the switch. while changing Transmission fluid, my observation was the initial fill was 0.6 L low. with correct level, it was much more smoother. Drives well.

I had a 2009 petrol ,quick for a big car ,fuel consumption on the open road good ,handled well, around town very thirsty -loved this car ,also had a 2011 and 2013 in diesel, gutless better off road than the petrol very tractable power ,had two major rear enders ,my prado very little damage the other car was a write -very safe ,great family car. toyota support -crap ,when there was a problem i went to google to the answers and then printed a copy to give to the Toyota mechanic to fix ,Toyota tend to go into denial if there is a problem , ,drove on a lot of dusty and corrugated roads in WA, comfortable on long trips -brilliant ,impressive cars-recommend.

My 2020 GXL Prado has just clocked up 70,000 klm as we travel around Australia towing a 6 metre caravan.. A fantastic vehicle to drive & extremely comfortable. Great fuel economy with or without the caravan hooked up. Half a tank of fuel used for 820 klm not towing. Now that's impressive We have an extra tank which is a godsend whilst traveling long distances. I have a nudge bar, two 7 inch Hardkorr driving lights & airbagman air bags to the rear suspension coils & All Terrain tyres. Air pressure in tyres are ser at 40 PSI & i have 30 PSI for the suspension air bags..only when towing & away we go😊 oh & a uhf radio installed 👍. There are Toyota Service Centres all around Australia which makes our traveling life so much more relaxed. And as per other comments you never see a Prado on the side of the road broken down. I hope they bring a diesel V6 Diesel back into Australia in 2024. I'll definitely buy another one.

I had a 98 Prado and it went everywhere my mates 80 series did and it did with less fuel usage so its a great car all around I sold it with 420,000ks on it and its still going...

2004 120 series Prado with 210,000km. 4l V6 with 4speed. Incredible off-road capability So so so so comfortable on and off-road. Built quality is out of this world. Interior is so well put together and while basic, has everything you would ever need for long trips. Seriously strong reliability, I know people with over 400,000km in same spec. I've had little things here and there but mainly attributed to off-road. Have taken it plenty of places in NSW, SA, NT and QLD including Lake Eyre, Simpson Desert, Oodnadatta Track, Flinders. Did I forget to say reliable? Honestly the most reliable car I've owned period! Handles like a boat Fuel economy is pretty bad, lol! Average about 17l/100km Soft brakes You're welcome to use it to review if you like. We are seeing the 120 series popularity really increase recently. It's one of those cars you really can't go wrong with.

which years received the 5 speed auto? how do the compare to fortuners and lc200 landcruisers? the prados with the V6 tend to be 34% more expensive than similar aged fortuner with the v6. i was considering one sonce the lc200 is borderline expensive

@@zhila5958 Fortuner's are garbage in comparison to Prado's, no comparison! LandCruisers are a bit larger and more comfortable but not by a significant amount. It depends what you need the car for. The LandCruisers will tow better. 5 speed started in 2005 for the Prado's. Both 4 and 5 speeds are excellent so don't get too caught up on that. The V6 is a great engine with a very good reputation for being reliable, probably one of the most reliable Toyota's made. Many go beyond 450k

@@danieljohn589 looks like i’ll avoid fortuners. truth be told, i wanted to get my parents something comfortable and durable. while i love the resale value on prados, they tend to be very expensive. i thought about highlander and Y62 patrol, but part availability sucks on highlander and idk if the y62 comes close to toyota reliability (a 2010 y62 patrol can be possibly found close to the price of 120 V6 prados). i really wanted to get them an LC200. but things went to crap and my plans failed. i’d appreciate further clarification. thank you for the insight tho! appreciate it.

As a 2009 150 series owner, the back seats are notoriously uncomfortable on long journeys, but the front ones are quite good and provide good support when off-road.

that rubix cube spot is perfect for flavored milk , i have the same year as the one you tested , and i got it because it was the last of the 3.0l and its bloody fantastic on fuel , with a 1300km range on a tank , very quiet ride , handles much better than i ever thought they would , pretty cheap to service and thats coming from a subaru forester ( dont ever buy a forester) that used to burn holes in my wallet , the prado is a great vehicle and i have never even had to lock the centre diff yet , even on sand and mud , cant recommend them enough

just bought a black VX 2022 that im getting in around a month which i was lucky to get as someone had canceled their order. Buying new is still cheaper than 2nd hand very late VX's, which i find crazy. Test drove one before buying and for such a good size 4x4 it handles well around town and it doesn't fill slow at all. I cannot wait to do long trips for fishing etc in this when i get it. I'm 6'3 getting older and was after something that can do everything, go away for a weekend with the kids +partner, throw all my fishing gear in the back and go out for an afternoon or throw mountain bikes in the back and go for a shred. I got sick of looking at suvs (Prado isn't a suv, it's more of 4WD) and crappy dual cab utes, and i think this will keep me happy for years to come.

Actually the 3 door sells very well in some countries despite being comical looking as you pointed out correctly, because it seems its wheelbase and chassis is very close to FJ-Cruiser and handles well in certain offroad situations.

I had a 1996 Prado Grande great car but only used it for towing a boat after the brakes faded on another Australian V6 car. A Ford destroyed itself when it ran into the back of it I only needed a new bumper and a tow ball cover. I only sold it in 2006 because I was moving overseas. The guy who bought it said he wanted to look at a Landrover Disc. As he walked down the driveway I asked him why he had a Toyota Hiace for work and he bought the Prado. It was a good choice my brother has a Discovery the garage explorer model.

"If it can survive Australia, it can survive anywhere". True, especially in Africa. You'll never see one broken down on the side of the road or in the desert. As an aside, this generation of Prado is split into three "sub-generations",for lack of a better word: 2009-2012, first facelift from 2013-2017, and the second facelift from 2018-2022. IMO, the engine you want is the 4.0 v6 petrol engine. It combines power and reliability to give you a pleasant ownership experience.

My 2010 petrol Kakadu has done 150000k with nothing but regular services. Extremely comfortable on long trips, I get 11l to 12l per 100k on highway trips and a bit more around town. Kakadu has wood rimmed steering wheel at top with no wear. Interior wears really well. Tyres last 60,000k low beam is excellent and I fitted powerful off road LED's for high beam. . Prados are very good, comfortable and reliable. Little things I love are the 150l fuel tank and interior space for 10 water bottles. I much prefer driving the Prado on long trips to my mates Sahara.

I've got a 2007 Prado Grande 4L Petrol and a 2004 3.8L Pajero Exceed on petrol and LPG. These are both top spec cars for the time. The Prado is much quieter, smoother and has better fuel economy (around 12l/100kms on a trip and around 15L/100 around town) than the Pajero but the Pajero being on LPG is much cheaper to run (Pajero around 15L/100 on petrol and 17L/100 LPG on a trip and 20L/100 petrol around town and 25+ on LPG). What I like about the Prado is the console cooler box and the rear air suspension and the smooth quiet ride. What I don't like is the peeling pearl white paint.... not happy Toyota. The Pajero paint is excellent apart from normal wear and tear and stone chips.

The Prado V6 petrol is also much easier to maintain, has no timing belt and easy access to the spark plugs. It has done 290 thousand kms and does not use any oil or have any leaks of any kind. The Pajero has done 420,000 kms and has a leaking oil valve cover and needs a timing belt, but still both are very reliable and have been on trips of several thousand kms this year with no problems.

Unfortunately I haven’t been that lucky purchased Toyota 2016 Prado Brand New finally sold it with only 80,000 after constant oil leaks Transmission Engine & electrical issues only positive point was repairs covered under warranty purchased New Pajero life is good now

On the subject of off-road noise, if you use the Downhill brake assist mode (GXL up), it IS noisy (always has been from new), but you'll definitely know it is working.

Yeah, but you only need it in really tough downhill stuff that’s not going to last too long, low range in these things is bloody brilliant and to be honest you don’t really need the downhill assist unless you are saving brakes on a really long downhill run.

Considered the Prado, but needed 3500kg Towing Capacity, which the 2.4L 4 Cylinder couldn't offer. Secured a well-fitted 2016 Disco 4, and while it was only the TDV6 (family has the SDV6 HSE), it tows the 3.2T Van beautifully, and handles the bush in such comfort and ease. Still see many Prados, especially for solo-campers exploring out there.

Australia never got the small 2.4L 4 cylinder. As he mentioned we only received the 4L v6 and the 3.0L 1KD or 1GD. All three variants are rated to 3.5T braked towing capacity. And have seen being used for more than that on the rare occasions

@@CorperalSTEWART These never came in 2.4L in ANY market. There was a 2.7L petrol 4 cylinder in the last 3 generations but the 2.4L was only the first generation way back in 1990-1996. The Prado's have also never been rated to 3.5T - even in Australia. All the other models - diesels and V6 petrols - are only rated to 3000kg braked capacity. Prior to 2009 the max was 2.5T.

Another great vid!! Nice back drop, Go Lake Mac! Prodo's are the better purchase especially over the LC200 with their astronomical price tags, Prado's especially the ones with the spare wheels on the back from factory, also have from factor a long range tank. The long ranger plus the economical smaller engine (either 2.8L or 3L) is I reckon for most outdoorzie families ideal and the most sound choice. Finally as you've mentioned in Aus at least the Resale value for a Prado is great too.

I have had a 2005 GXL model in petrol since new, but with 360K on the clock there are now a few squeak and rattles. Dual fuel tanks hold 190lt great for distance travel but thirsty. Not sure how the newer steering geometry is set up but this older car can U-turn inside cars half it's size. I have been a huge fan and will keep it as a farm car when it's time to replace.

My 2013 altitude with 180k has just required injectors, injector driver, manifold/EGR clean. Major expense and very common for any DiD, no matter what brand. it hasn't put me off the vehicle. I plan to put many more miles on it. But anyone buying a vehicle with over 150k should factor in some expensive maintenance

Practicality test- maybe we should add the Westfield assessment. Can I drive into an undercover carpark? Will it negotiate the corners at Charlestown or Garden City carparks? Plus discuss that Prados are tugs for many a retiree, they have lugged 3.5T for 20000km. Look out for tow packs, Anderson plugs and red dirt in the air vents. It might be a one owner grand dad- but has seen some hard work. The also cart horse floats around the country and tow to the max.

I have driven a 120 for the past decade and the only thing that I can fault it on, is that the rear tail door does sag over time probably because of the spare wheel hanging on it.

mine too. I got a pack of the Kaon door shims. I put the two in and bingo- perfectly aligned. Door shuts perfectly now. Painted the striker plate and catch as a treat :-)

Dunno about your recommendation to get the 2.8 models over the older 3L 150s, I deliberately opted for an earlier non-DPF model to avoid known DPF issues with early 2.8s, bought it just before class action was launched against Toyota. Great car for family duties, camping adventures, with some off-road driving thrown in. Nothing else out there (apart from more expensive 200 series) that offers balance of reliability, service network, off-road chops, and comfort/ practicality. Was happy to pay Toyota tax up front, figured it will hold its value better than competitors so will get it back on the resale...

@@mrkring1526 I'm aware of the injector problems of early 1KDs, but from what I could find that was well and truly sorted by the time last of the 150 series 1KDs were made. I'm still budgeted for new injectors at some stage as I'm planning to keep mine for a while. Anything else I should know? I still reckon these are a safe bet considering number of vehicles with issues relative to volume of vehicles in service, especially compared to other large 4wds with similar comfort levels (e.g. Jeep Grand Cherokee).

Xcellent review, on the vehicle only and on straight level roads , but load it up with people sand bags etc and see if it has acceleration and cornering also I see your vehicle has a tow bar so put a trail and boat up to 1900 kilos and a vehicle with 7 people and see Haworth it goes after all that what the vehicle is designed for cheers

I’ve done 180,000 km in my 2012 diesel manual. Only serviced regularly and replaced the timing belt. It’s never missed a beat. I’ve never even replaced the brake pads (my mechanic said they are still “meaty”) I love this car. I’ve dated many different cars. But this is the one I’d marry. I get 8.3L per 100km regularly including town and country driving. And I actually love driving it. I think it handles better than my BMW m sport 530i. That’s a huge claim. But I back it.

Injector seals leaking and injectors failing on the 3 litre, both of which can often lead to catastrophic engine failure. DPF dramas and airbox dusting woes on the 2.8, which Toyota like to pretend doesn't happen. Oh what a feeling! The older 3 litre is a good motor, if you have some preventative maintenance carried out on the injectors to remove the risk of problems.

@@Uberkreig Morning mate. When we went over how many Prado are sold vs how many have this issue, we wouldn't regard it as a "common" problem. Yes it happens but the mechanics and technicians we spoke to and reports we read show that while potentially catastrophic for the unfortunate few, the vast majority of Prado have either had any issues resolved under warranty or haven't experienced any issues at all. If this is different for where you are located please let us know as we do focus on Australian Prado models.

We're not concerned about Toyota bullying us at all but when we did the research we found that the issues raised on forums were generally sorted during servicing and under warranty. Also, as we just mentioned to Uberkreig, when we looked at how many Prado are sold vs the amount of problems and issues reported, we wouldn't regard some of these issues as "common". We recognise the Prado isn't perfect by any means, and unfortunately there are the few owners that have experienced catastrophic failures, but the vast majority of Prado out there run faultlessly. Also, we gather our information primarily from the Australian market but if you're not based here in Australia and know of issues in your country that would be regarded as common, please let us know so we can add them to our cheat sheets when they become international. The Prado and the Hilux pretty much use identical engines, hence the issues that they can (and do) suffer are exactly the same. In your other vids, you and Jim have covered off on injector seal issues, and DPF problems on the Hilux. These are issues that you also have to be aware of on the Prado too (same engine, same problems). As for the injector seal issues on the 3 litre 1KD motor, I was under the impression that Toyota in New Zealand recalled all of these motors to replace the seals fix the issue? If that is the case, it's a shame the Toyota here in Aus didn't do the same, and chose instead to let peoples engines self destruct. 😕 As for the DPF issues on the later Prados and Hiluxes, as you mentioned in other videos, Toyota are going to warrant the DPF for 10 years (after being forced by a class action). After the 10 year mark, owning one of these affected vehicles may be a big risk, money wise....
