Glad to see I’m not the only one that curses those clips every time I do my brakes.

I may have a solution for you regarding the spring that goes onto the caliper. It works for me so i want to pass it along. What I do is straighten out the pin that goes into the top and bottom holes just enough so that it goes in and doesnt spring out. A vice and a pair of pliers make this part of the repair go smoothly. I have been doing it this way for many years with excellent results. I currently own a 2002 WJ with 72 thousand original miles. Hope this helps. Good day sir.

Steven, Thanks for the tip! I will give it a try when I work on that type of brake again. Thanks! Chris

@@chex313 Not on the rear calipers. Just the fronts are eligible for that swap. The rears are all the same regardless of the year.

I use that spring trick too from time to time, it does work! Also, a 2002 WJ with 72k miles?? It's a baby still haha, and yes I know that was 4 yrs ago and I imagine it has more miles now, but it still is young compared to most. My 2003 WJ has 248k on it, and is on its second engine now. First one died from piston slap. 😎

Reminds me of the good old days eh, Love your neet tips 'n' tricks you have there for the brake line OTC clamps, Where can I pick up the Clamps from? Thanks for the how to video.

Im glad you liked the video. I plugged the end of the brake hoses with an "OTC 6703 Line Fluid Stopper Kit" which i bought from amazon. I used a"Fluid Line Clamp Set 4 Pc" from Harbor Freight to pinch the old brake hose. Thanks, Chris

No need to use any clamps, just use the old trick instead :-)

Great video have you had to replace your brakes again since this video just asking because you didn’t use any lube which is very critical for brake work?

Why not use the old trick by depressing the brake pedal just slightly, and nothing will leak out. And no fluid mess at all.
@shadowdog500
@shadowdog500 5 жыл бұрын
I am aware of that method and have used my spring loaded brake pedal depressor to do stuff like this in the past, but I still had to bock off the line to keep the fluid from slowly dripping out, so I just block the lines off now. I only pinch lines that I am going to replace and Use the OTC line plug set to seal off the rest. I also like that I can bleed each line as I do each caliper. Thanks, Chris

So I wanted to change the brake lines on my 2000 JGC but after watching this, I still do lol. Now I just really have to learn how. When changing brake lines all around, I'm guessing you have to remove the tires also?

Everything came from NAPA. You can see the NAPA box for the long front brake hose at 18:24. if I can’t get factory parts NAPA has always been my second option.

OTC 6703 Line Fluid Stopper Kit www.amazon.com/gp/product/B008PW51TK/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 You can also check out this on on amazon TGR Steel Line Stopper Kit - Fuel Rails/Lines, Steel Brake, Fuel and A/C Lines they appear to be a $19 knockoff of the parts of the clapm set that I used in the video. To stop brake fluid from draining, just depress the brakepedal just a tiny bit and lock it with something so it does not move. Then draining is stopped.

I noticed NAPA sells them with or without mounting bracket. If it’s a swap out, why not just reuse the old bracket? Thanks!

You can, but from what I remember the price difference wasn’t that great and just decided to go all new. Last week I talked to my brother in law who’s son got my Jeep and he told me that the front left caliper started leaking at the piston seal a few weeks ago and he had to replace it. They only had 19 months on them so I’m not too impressed with NAPA rebuilds. Chris

Shadowdog500 Bummer it leaked. Under Warranty at least? That’s what I was planing to buy. NAPA and Autozone is all I have around here. Thanks for the info.

Johnny's Cousin Steve he replaced them and turned in the cores before I found out so no chance for a warranty. I’m not sure what the warranty was anyway. Cant say what to buy between the two anymore. I tend to use factory parts or factory overhaul kits like I did in my Corolla caliper rebuild video. I didn’t on this one since it was pretty old and I was giving it away. Chris

Shadowdog500 I bought 2 new remanufactured calipers from NAPA today and installed them. The one front one WOULD NOT BLEED!! I let it gravity bleed for 2 hours. Then tried pumping the pedal. Not a drop of fluid out of the bleeder. Tried over and over again. I finally took it off and had a friend pump the brakes with caliper off, but hooked up. Only one piston pushed out and then started to leak. Ugh. Drivers side was fine. Taking it back for a new one in the morning. Frustrating.

Johnny's Cousin Steve nothing worse than getting a defective part. I hope the next one works for you. Other than factory parts, I don’t know what ones to trust anymore. Chris

do you need to put those springs on the rear calipers? why are they on there to begin with?
@shadowdog500
@shadowdog500 11 ай бұрын
Unfortunately they are needed. They are retainer springs that keep the caliper from moving around. Thankfully they modified the caliper design on the newer Jeeps to use a stamped flat spring that pops on and off easily with no fuss at all.

Better way > Dont put that style caliper back on the jeep, throw the spring style right in the trash and put a set of Akebono's on

The only reason I changed the brakes at all was because it was going to my Nephew. They did upgrade the brake design on the newer jeeps and replaced the wire spring with a stamped metal spring that is a breeze to install and remove.
