Here's another comment years later for ya. I was on my way home from work and stopped by the store for the wife. Came out and the key would not turn. Now being a Jeep owner, I have a set of metric hammers in the vehicle. This video got me right back on the road and then a few days later, walked me through replacing the cylinder. Thank you!

Excellent tutorial. I used your video to replace the key cylinder in my 2002 Jeep Liberty and it came out and went in without a hitch. I bought the Dorman Ignition Lock Cylinder that rekeys the cylinder to use the original Jeep key. It was simple to rekey and the entire install took me less than 10 mins.

I took the covers off and sprayed the top and inside of the cylinder with WD-40 and it worked immediately. Didn't need to break anything! Probably the first lubrication for the cylinder since it rolled off the factory floor.

Great video, thanks! I bought a new ignition lock from Addvance Auto parts and rekeyed it. To my original key. Done. I was wondering what caused this problem, and determined that it had to be that the side bar was not going into the notches on the wafers (you might call them "tumblers"). So while the lock core was out of the cylinder, I put the key into the lock core and sure enough, the side bar was not seating. I removed all the wafers and cleaned everthing thoroughly. When I reassembled the lock it worked perfectly. Still, it was worth the time and money to learn something new! Not sorry that I replaced the lock. Peace of mind. 8~)

Josh electronics Thank you for your reply. It’s been my experience over the years after replacing probably at least over 100 of these lock cylinders is that the failure seems to be the tumblers. I take them all apart and I’ve even rebuilt many of these by just replacing the tumblers. Thanks again

Hell yeah brother. My 1998 Cherokee was doing exactly that. Key wasn't turning got my trusty framing hammer I keep on the floorboard between the door and seat as a just in case policy gave the key a few hits and success!!!!

Could you describe what that yellow switch is and does? The one right at the end/under the ignition tumbler?

If you’re talking about the yellow dot, that is part of the clocksping, if you’re talking about the yellow plug that is for the airbag system which is also part of the clockspring. Don’t disconnect the yellow plug without knowing how to work on an airbag system.

I am guessing [amost sure, actually] that the Ignition Switch Actuator Pin is broken....most likely some of that cheap pot metal is missing some of its metal on at least one side. For that vehicle, i believe it is: Dorman 924-704. Depends where you purchase it from, but it's around $23 or so.

Leo gz You can get them at the JEEP dealer or if you have a Napa store in your area? Also advance auto and oreilly’s usually carries them also. Just remember if you have a security system on your vehicle that uses a transponder on the ignition switch you will need to have it programmed or it will not read the new key. If you don’t have a transponder just slap the new one in and rock on

I just sprayed wd-40 dry lube (dirt and dust resistant) in ignition key hole. Fixed problem immediately.

You can use an ignition switch from anywhere, the issue is when it comes to coding the key to the new transponder and skim module. I can code keys with my scanner, if you don’t have that ability you’ll need to have the dealer code it or a locksmith can come to your house and code it for you, either way it’s fairly expensive if you need to have somebody do it for you

Robert berin The transponder is part of the security system. If you had one it wouldn’t start with the new key you got and would need to be programmed, yours did start so you do not have one. If you did have one you would see an electrical connector going around the lock cylinders

You can buy any lock cylinder and it will come with new keys. The only thing is if you have a factory alarm system with a transponder around your ignition switch you’ll need to get it reprogrammed by the dealer or have a locksmith come to your house that does programming. I use my snap on scanner to do the programming so I f you know any alto techs that have that capability they can do it as well. If you don’t have a transponder just put the switch in and you’ll be on your way.

Gregory, if you turn the switch 2 clicks and it cranks then the electrical part of your switch is bad. Which is the opposite end of the key. That’s going by your description and assuming you only turned the key 2 times. It shouldn’t crank if you turn the key 2 times

(Either way)..is it time for the drill, do you know any other solutions or maybe a tip on drilling so I don't make this more costly than it is... Next problem is ho W can I bypass the skim sensor? Most of the local shops here have recommended a locksmith to reinstall the new key cylinder, but I would rather try myself cause the only way to learn is hands on (with a little advice from you videos) would it cool the skim if I were to duct tape the chip end of my key inside the halo then connected a ground wire to the metal end then connected my wires back but left in unattached to the mount just tucked and tied up underneath the steering column?? That may be a stupid question 🤣 so try to laugh responsibly💭.I've learned more than I knew before already👍, but at the same time it's a 2000 model with 131,??? miles 2wd😭but excellent 4.0 eng and drivetrain. I would love to keep it on the road, but really don't want to put more in it than it's worth.. ya know. Will continue to like and subscribe to your channel 😜 it seams the most comprehensive to me at my limited experience level.. @@gregorystandefer9568, I appreciate the fact you’re trying to save money and that’s what my goal is for people to do, you can try to drill the removal tab or use some sort of dremell tool (I personally drill them out) and you can replace the cylinder yourself. You can’t bypass the sensor, there’s way too many things that go into a factory security system and it will just give you problems when you don’t have the time to deal with it so I recommend just fixing it properly. I normally re-code these when I’m done because I have the scanners to do it, but unfortunately you’ll need to have your dealer do it or call a locksmith to your house. Either way it’s not going to be cheap. Sorry to say. Before you drill try to spray a lubricant in the cylinder. Wd40 or graphite and keep tapping on it. By the way make sure your steering wheel moves back and forth freely from side to side. Sometimes when you turn into a parking spot and the steering wheel tries to rerun back it will lock and put pressure on the steering column and the key will never turn. So make sure the steering wheel moves with no pressure on it. Good luck. Hope it helps

@@jasont7887 you ain't gonna believe it but I have bypassed the skim and it's running now temporarily with ALL gauges and bells working!!! Anything that will go in the key slot will start the engine, runs smooth as ever.I cut my bent key off.. Drilled through the metal part left made a jumper ground wire to go from key to frame..Duct taped the chip part of the key inside the "halo" end where the key should insert, but instead of mounting in place the part is zip tied tight underneath the column..I'm not gonna put my plastic cover on yet, considering you suggestions but leaning toward standard switch cylinder and deleting disabling SKIM altogether.. What do you think?🤔

I’m having a problem the new key cylinder got locked up they tried to use the old one w new tumblers and had the new one locked up took it back to get the new one unlocked to take out and set pins like old one , well the got the new one unlocked then took the new cover from the new cylinder and put it once again on the old one instead of fixing the pins on the new one to match the old one so as to replace all old parts w new and I’m back to sq one new cylinder locked again where I can’t take it out to set pins at all I don’t know how they did it but that’s what I need to know
