Hindsight being 20/20... it is logical that the aftermarket remote start might need to have some way, either with semiconductor logic or a physical connection, to "trick" the car into thinking that there was a key in the ignition - otherwise it probably wouldn't be able to start the car when the start function is called from its remote. It may very well be that whatever device or logic that the little remote start module used to trick the car, might have gotten stuck in the activated position - leading the car to think the key is always present. Nice job spotting the mismatch between the wiring diagrams and what's physically present, saved a ton of time checking different connections and whatnot. Good stuff!

Interesting and tricky problem. In opposition to parts required, it had one part too many :-) Aftermarket add-ons can cause weird faults. If you hadn't spotted it, it could make you loose some time.

I could have sworn that a few years ago I read that a BestBuy location ended up frying the harness of a later model car due to their improper install of a remote start system.

I pulled one of those out of my Acura MDX. Luckily they didn't have any wires cut and everything was clean and back to OEM once I pulled out that giant ball of wires.

6:10. Why is meter on AC instead of DC? At the end of video it was on DC. I don't think the first readings were valid.

Thanks for showing the good known voltages at the end. I am sure it will come in handy when diagnosing good vs bad. Although I noticed AC voltage (may have been a mistake?) - I get some client asking me to install remote starters - Hate to deal with them, I never done them. How hard is it to install them? And what brank you recommend? Once again thanks for posting these videos very informative. 👍👍

I need to get rid of this annoying chime. Your video is the first I've seen opened Ignition switch (Mopar nr is: 4685 719AB). This sensor is responsible for resistance change for key in/out but it is in line with other resistors for turned key sensing. Have You tried (on any jeep) to disable the key-in chime while open driver door? I guess the right resistance must be simulated...

@@autodiagytI put my anwserearlier, but it vanished... anyway.... no. I have XH/XK. And the reason i I often leave my driver doors ajar with key in ignition. I looked into XH manual and I know how the Ignition Switch is constructed in a principle. I am still thinking how to make chime go away... I already looked to several sollutions, but none of them is OK for me. I do not want to cut the wire (unplug it) from the door actuator, I do not want to disable the chime speaker on the back of the cluster. I am close to just disassembling the ignition housing and making the pin shorter, so it wouldn't engage the resistance. There is a trick though: the equivalent resistance of key in/out is paralel to resistance of the position of the switch Off/start/acc/run/lock. So diabling it it may cause a problem to signal reciever: the steering control module, to read the key position correctly and by that communicating correctly with Front Control module....

I wanted a remote start for my 2018 Equinox but didn't want to take a chance of a problem down the line. I searched around the web and I can get a GM factory plug & play with new remote for about 200 bucks. I'm going with that.

Replaced the ignition sensor and it seemed to do the trick. I took apart the old one and the two metal contacts were stuck together causing the problem. Video helped a lot, thanks 👍

It’s also irrelevant to mention specifics about a vehicle if the system in question is common among several different modules. This same ignition switch is used in many dodge and Chrysler vehicles. This fault could happen to any of them. My videos are never about this specific vehicle has this issue and here is the fix. It’s for technicians to see a thought process. My channel isn’t about repairing vehicles, it’s how to troubleshoot problems. I could do every video without giving any vehicle information and it will still be valuable to the audience it’s intended for.

Someone probably stuck something longer thana key in there and it bent that little contact to the point where it's always touching. Maybe a kid or something. Seems like you could probably take it apart and bend it back.. Lets see : )_
