The auto engine stop and start design flaw is really horrible. I took my test drive back in less than a kilometer and got back my 2012 Wrangler Sahara Unlimited. I also still have an ancient 1997 Jeep Wrangler TJ and a 1990 Jeep Wrangler YJ that needs a new transmission. The YJ I will likely sell. The TJ will be with me forever since it was my first new car purchase ever. The 2012 Sahara may be traded up if the JL is ever fixed.

Great job with this video! Thank you for sharing this with us! I have a 2012 Rubicon Unlimited that my wife and I shipped to the Island of Molokai a year ago. We need to buy another Jeep for use here in Utah where we live most of the year. I had wanted a JL Unlimited Rubicon with the diesel, but after driving two JL's and after rethinking other aspects related to the diesel, I've decided we'll soon order a 2018 JL Unlimited Rubicon. Thanks for your advice about the tailgate strength on the new JL's! I also like the way you showed us how to tell which gear the automatic transmission is in while on the road. P.S. I'll be 70 in March. My first car, purchased in April 1964 by my father, was a used Land Rover 88" 2.25 liter petrol station wagon. Drove Land Rover products for many years. My first Jeep was purchased via a factory order that arrived in April 2012. My wife and I now own two Jeeps, second being a 2014 Grand Cherokee Overland diesel. We'll soon be a three Jeep family. Even at my age, I can assure you and anyone else, I prefer driving a Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon virtually anywhere I go! Jeep---and its employees---are doing a fabulous job building what I now believe are the best dual-purpose on-off road vehicles on this planet. The Wrangler Rubicons are at the top of the 4x4 food chain! Andy McKane, Springville, Utah.

The new JL has beefy axles. Thicker axle tubes, stronger brackets and outer C's massive. Front axle disconnect sucks though(Electronically actuated versus vacuum is better though). 220mm(8.66in) rear and 210mm (8.26in) front ring gears for Rubicon. The refined look has TJ appearance which is a good thing i think. New standard is 35in tire's and need no modding. Wouldn't be surprised running 37in tires without issues. All JL wranglers will have 3rd gen dana 44 rear axle. Ring gears will be different on non rubicons.

Got 2 questions. One regarding the engine cut off. Let’s say you don’t want the engine to cut off. Do you have to push that button every time you start the car or will it remember the setting you set it as before shutting the car off? Two. Regarding the proximity sensor. Will the Jeep actually put itself into Park if the proximity sensor is triggered? And does it get triggered if someone let’s say parks to close to you?
@wayalife7 жыл бұрын
You have to turn it off every time you start your engine. Can't say about the proximity sensor as we didn't opt for the safety group. Sorry.
@beniaminv7 жыл бұрын
Wayalife thank you. The economy mode or whatever they call it seems like a good idea for now. Even better that you can shut it off for off-roading purposes. I was wondering about the proximity sensor because I think it was teraflex who covered it saying that if someone parked to close to you than the proximity sensor would kick in and throw you in Neutral and the only way to get out of it would be throwing it in 4 low which shuts it off. Anyways thanks for the quick reply. So far the JL looks nice. Can’t wait to see what aftermarket products come out for it. Still love my JK better though. Lol.
@Cogzed7 жыл бұрын
Great video! Thanks for answering those questions. I’m worried about the start stop tech. I figure it will put extra wear on your starter, alternator and battery. No bueno. Thoughts? Especially in rush hour traffic with lots of stop and go.
@wayalife7 жыл бұрын
A certain amount of conditions need to be met for the start/stop to work. If you're in stop and go rush hour traffic where you're literally stopping for seconds at a time, your engine won't cut off. In fact, if you come to a complete stop and the motor turns off and then you start again only to stop again shortly there after, the motor will not stop again. It mainly turns off if you come to a complete stop like at a stop light or are sitting in place for more than a specified amount of time. I understand that this time can be adjusted somewhat as well. Of course, you can always just turn it off each time you start your engine.
@Cogzed7 жыл бұрын
Wayalife That’s great to know. I’m glad to hear they put some thought into that. Maybe I wouldn’t shut mine off if that was the case. Of course it would be very beneficial if you were stopped in traffic and not moving for long periods of time. Thanks for the enlightenment bro. One day when I get that diesel Jeep I plan on going on one of your group expeditions with my wife! Take care.

I have a question i have to assume the start stop system in your jeep with the 3.6 uses the conventional starter,the belt driven start stop in the 2.0 uses the belt to start the motor,when the belt gets full of mud or soaked with creek water will it slip causing the motor not to restart?

Can you tell me what is the rpm at 60 mph in 8th gear on flat terrain. Also is the rubicon gear ratio going to make the rpm different than the Sahara at the same speed? Thanks in advance, Roger Karstofsky Ps my question is relative to gas mileage on either model.

I know this is an old video, but question on the first point, which you may have addressed but I wasn’t completely clear. I can see that the JL tailgate is completely adequate to hold a larger spare, but is the factory plastic carrier? Great video Eddie!! Here’s a question for ya that I’m sure most people have been curious about: How do you think the aftermarket will handle the new license plate location with aftermarket bumpers, and given the fact the back up camera now resides where most people would relocate it to
@wayalife7 жыл бұрын
Great question. From what I have seen, it is more than likely that some manufacturers will still relocated the license plate onto the spare only below or above the back up cam. I could also see aftermarket bumpers that have some kind of bracket that holds the plate up where it was on the JK.

The rear seat cushion measures about 50" wide and 16" deep. Not 100% sure of the angle but it is about 2° more than the JK rear seat. I can find out for sure tomorrow if you really need to know. Overall, it's more spacious and more comfortable to sit in.

What about a 37” spare? Still good with factory tailgate? Or is there reinforcement that should be added that won’t break the bank?
@wayalife7 ай бұрын
So long as you make sure the rubber isolators are pressing firmly against the sidewall of the spare, the tailgate will hold up a 37 fairly well as is. If you do a lot of high speed bombing across the desert with hard hits, I would reinforce the hinges too.

Hi, thank you for your videos, Very clear information. Going to so the Fox 2.0 steering stabilizer just based on your video about it. Question for you if you're willing. I have a 37" on my JL 2018 moab with Terflex relocator that it came with. Tire and wheel 145 lbs. Since Teraflex does not have a hinge support for the JL's yet or at all, do you feel that 145 is too heavy for the hinges. From your video, it sounded like it'll hold the orig tire and wheel plus a fold out table of a significant weight. Should I leave the spare behind, I would rather not? Thank you.
@wayalife4 жыл бұрын
Before you buy the Fox steering stabilizer, is there anything wrong with your OE one? If not, I might recommend that you just save your money until or unless you do need to replace it. As far as spare tire relocators go, I would NOT put a 37 on the tailgate UNLESS you make sure to install some kind of isolator extension that allows the sidewall of the tire to press firmly against it kzbin.info/www/bejne/kH-kioGogrB_rsU

On the 2017-18 Ford vehicles you can open up the dash and find the two wires to the switch and connect them together. After you connect them every time you start the vehicle it is like you have already pressed the button to disable auto stop/start. If you want you can hook the wires to one of the aux switches so you can turn it on/off but you will need to restart the vehicle after you flip the switch. On Fords you can put a dummy plug in the trailer power receptacle it will disable auto stop/start but it will also disable your rear view camera. These hacks may work on Jeeps but I don't know, my Jeep doesn't have that feature.

Death wobble is a condition caused by lose or worn out steering and/or suspension components. Most typically, it is caused by a loose track bar or worn out ball joint. Am wondering with the auto engine shut off does it do the same when 4 low is engaged ? Or do you have to turn it off when off road
@wayalife7 жыл бұрын
I have not experienced the start stop when in 4LO
@00ninja005 жыл бұрын
Hey Eddie, I know it’s an old old video, but if you or someone else sees this, do u know of any way to turn off the start stop feature so it doesn’t reactivate by itself each time i shut off the truck. I hate having to remember to turn it off each time I start it back up.

A Tazer Mini will take care of it. I run one on my JT

My question is - What is the real world cargo capacity of the JL behind the 2nd row seat?
@wayalife7 жыл бұрын
Not sure what Jeep states but I suppose I can take a tape measure and find the area of that space.
@CSPRacing7 жыл бұрын
That'd be awesome. I'm looking at a Hardtop JL in the near future and was wondering how well it would do on road trips with all our stuff in the back.
@wayalife7 жыл бұрын
37" deep x 41" wide x 41" tall. Now, these dimensions are just the immediate area behind the seat, between the fenders and to the top of the roof. There is still lots of room above the fenders and to the sides of the hard top but the roll bar is in between them.

Thank you SO MUCH for these measurements. I have a 2000 Nissan Exterra with lots of space and was looking at the JL as next vehicle. This was my #1 concern. Your responses to viewers are awesome!

Hi Does anyone know how to engage Auto park back on? My Jl says auto part disabled.

Great Vid @wayalife ! I'm curious about the lag with the start/stop feature. If you were to stop, let the engine shut off and then immediately mash the gas pedal, how quick does it respond?
@wayalife7 жыл бұрын
I haven't done it yet but I have no doubt there would be a slight delay.
@Enchantedescapesanctuary3 жыл бұрын
It delays a bit, jerks the engine back on. It’s a mechanical and safety issue due to this.
@lokithedark15 жыл бұрын
how does the auto-stop/start really save gas? I thought the starting a car wastes as much gas as sitting at idle for the duration of the average stop light, or atleast that was the theory before auto-stop/start was a thing. Even if it did save gas wouldn't it burn up the starter?

Did your on road driving characteristics change after lift. Any flighty feel. My jlur is so smooth on road I’m apprehensive to lift it yet.
@wayalife6 жыл бұрын
Flightiness is a symptom of not having enough caster set. Being that the JL comes with an FAD system, you can add a lot more positive caster without having any ill effect.

What made you get so involved in jeeps? and why do you love them so much?
@wayalife4 жыл бұрын
LOL - I suppose that's a video we should make someday. Long story short, Cindy and I have a love for exploring and there are few vehicles made that can take us to where we want to go or at least, as well in a Jeep. Over the years, they have brought so much joy in our life.

You may have already answered this but does the manual trans also show what gear one is in on the dash display? (not sure one would really need it but....).

No, there is no PRNDL on a manual.

Well sure I know that:-) I was just wondering if there was some other gear indicaator in one of the menus for the manual...

So a 33 (285/70/17] spare weighing 60lbs would not be an issue mounted on a 2018 stock JLU. Correct?
@wayalife3 жыл бұрын
That's what comes on Rubicon's from the factory. No, no problem and the Recon comes with 35's. You just need to make sure that the sidewall of the spare is pressing firmly against the rubber isolator.
@gcjctc23 жыл бұрын
@@wayalife I should have said the JLU is a stock Sport S. I put 33s on my 17 inch wheels but was t sure about the spare weight capacity is it Still ok on 2018 Sport S? Thank you for the quick reply love your videos.
@wayalife3 жыл бұрын
@@gcjctc2 Yup, it'll still work. Again, you just need to make sure that the sidewall of the spare presses firmly against the rubber isolator and you'll be good.
@greghull31894 жыл бұрын
I had some 33's on 17x9.5 Black Rhino's installed by a local #DirectOffroad shop on my existing stock JLU spare tire mount. The total weight of tire and rim is around 78#. My OEM tailgate bump stop is about an inch short of reaching the spare. Do you think I should extend the bump stop so it contacts the spare just to be on the safe side? I really haven't noticed any rattle and 99% of the time I'm on paved streets. Thank you.
@wayalife4 жыл бұрын
I would. When you take your Jeep off road, the spare WILL jiggle and over time, it WILL be a problem.
@greghull31894 жыл бұрын
Wayalife Thank you for the recommendation. I took your advice and just put on some Energy Suspension bump tailgate stops. They are manufactured for JK’s but with a little grease, I was able to push the nipples in the mounting holes of my JL.

Is there an option to turn off the dome light when the doors are removed?

Unlike the old TJ where you had to pull a fuse, once the wiring harnesses are disconnected from the doors, the lights stay off.

do you know what the option "Hinge-Gate Reinforcement by Mopar" at 675$ is??
@wayalife6 жыл бұрын
It's actually more like $800 when you include all the parts you need but they're brackets that reinforce the tailgate. If you're carrying a 37" spare tire, it is something worth considering.
@andythoummaraj92824 жыл бұрын
So the hinges should be okay for 35" tires right?

Wayalife first thank you for all the work you've done over the years making such great videos. As an owner of both JK's and this new JL ,what is your perspective on the interior size between the two models? I'm 6'4 with a family of 4 and considering replacing my Tundra (enormous interior) with a JL or just getting an old jeep for a toy to play in when I can. I've been going around and round for two years, but the new JL seems to be nudging me off the fence...
@wayalife7 жыл бұрын
I'm only 5'-7" and not exactly a tall guy so there's plenty of room for me. The JL is physically a longer, wider and taller Jeep so it might help you out. I do have a friend who's 6'-10" and just bought one and so far, he seems happy with it. I might recommend that you test drive one as that would really push you over. Oh, I should note that I run Mastercraft Baja RS seats in one of my JK and it sits a couple of inches lower. This makes it hard for my wife to see being that she's only 5'-4" but tall guys who've ridden in my Jeep LOVE it.
@user-wc8yw4dw8w7 жыл бұрын
Wayalife thanks for taking the time to respond. 6’10 is an amazing fit! I’ll keep the seats in mind as well since now I have an excuse to upgrade them first. My wife is only 5’ so she has pretty much given up on anything I drive LOL. By the way your garage is amazing. I think most of your viewers would love to see a walk through of your other jeeps.

The auto start stop on my manual transmission JL restarts the engine as soon as you apply any pressure to the clutch peddle.

I'm kind of surprised that the manual transmissions even have it.

What mods can we expect for the JL?
@wayalife7 жыл бұрын
In the relatively near future, a small lift and 37's. Long term, hard to say for sure :)
@Lastjeepgarage7 жыл бұрын
What’s gonna be your first modification? Where do you think the JL will be weak on the trail?
@wayalife7 жыл бұрын
Not sure on mods. Maybe a small lift to clear 37's. We'll have to see. Hoping to run the JL stock for a bit so that we have a good reference point. As far as where it might be weak goes, hard to say. Jeep did a good job of addressing a lot of previous issues. Possibly the FAD.

Will the tailgate hinges hold the weight of larger tires?
@wayalife7 жыл бұрын
As stated in this video, the tailgate is designed to not only hold at least a 35" tire, it is ALSO rated to hold up to 85 lbs. of weight on the trail rail inside.

Can the Auto Stop Start be permanently disabled or do you have to hit the button each time you get in the vehicle?
@wayalife6 жыл бұрын
You have to hit the button each time. This is something ALL new vehicles have now.
@Thergood6 жыл бұрын
Yea, was just hoping manufacturers would start allowing it to be permanently disabled. Maybe an ECU mod down the road will be able to disable it.

My auto stop/start feature doesn’t seem to work at all. It keeps telling me that the battery is not fully charged even though I drive the JL everyday. Any suggestion as to why this may be?
@wayalife6 жыл бұрын
So, I talked to a friend of mine at FCA and he said that you might have a bad battery cell or bad IBS (intelligent battery sensor). There's no way it could be the alternator as the Jeep would die.
