Today I worked on my jeep crd first time replacing glow plugs and only stuck on that left down bolt on that elbow. rest of work is totally fine as y described......I pulled out 5V plugs probably the one that dealer installed after recall for ceramic ones. I hope they changed system to 5V.....

*UPDATE*. So I have everything installed and plugged in. I tried to start it up but it wouldn’t start and show signs of a dead/weak battery. However the battery was reading about 12.3/12.4 volts. Then I was cranking it again and then saw smoke coming from the bottom. There’s a good chance I probably killed my starter 😑. I’m hoping that it’s not in a very difficult spot to get to. I tried finding videos on replacing a starter on a diesel but only found the 3.7 gasoline variant. I will try to post a short to show you what’s going on . Again thanks for your help and support 🤠😁. This video has been very helpful with this project

One thing to check... Be sure you have the serpentine belt routed correctly. If it's not on properly, it could cause the hard cranking and smoke from either the starter or the belt itself. You're making progress. Let me know what you find.

@@azrailfan2717 From watching your video. The serpentine belt is routed correctly and the battery is fully charged at 12 volts. In my opinion, it's either a bad starter or a pump or idler pulley, etc. run by the belt is locking up, however; I've had an idler pulley fully lock up on our CRD and the engine still started right up. It toasted the belt right after starting, but the starter was strong enough to crank without issues. That makes me think your starter could certainly be wore out. P.S. If you get that going, you will certainly have a NICE low mileage CRD. Keep up the good work. Thinking good thoughts for you!

Thanks for the great video. Just going to do mine. I’ve been putting it off for a while. Now that winter is around the corner, it needs to be done. With your bad glow plugs, we’re you getting a check engine light?

@@2StallGarage Thanks. I’m starting to believe the starter is bad. I doubt the fuel pump is bad since the live data is showing over 500 psi in the fuel lines. And I’ve been seeing smoke coming from the bottom. So I agree with you and saying the starter is toast. I hope it’s not hard to get too

The engine is originally programmed to do 7V ceramics. IDparts sells replacements and their users (like me) have put 5V steel plugs in with no problems. IDparts' explanation is here: "based on community feedback and our own testing with winter starting, we prefer the 5V plugs regardless of ECM programming. Running 5V plugs at 7V may reduce lifespan and will void the glow plug warranty. That said, many of our customers have been running the 5V plugs on 7V ECM calibration for years so far without issue. Using the 5V plugs with the 7V ECM calibration won’t trigger a check engine light. Steel glow plugs won’t damage the engine when they fail, unlike the OE ceramic glow plugs. "

Thank you. When I plugged in the OBD reader it said cylinder 3 misfire and something about glow plug 4 (not working would assume?). I started it and it ran for about 5 minutes then it stopped. It wants to turn over but won’t stay running 🤷‍♂️. I’m hoping replacing the glow plugs would help (it only has 90,000 original miles on it)

@@azrailfan2717 it’s hard to diagnose without being there but from experience, when 1 glow plug needs to be replaced, your better off replacing all of them. If it’s sputtering but not able to start after already running for 5 minutes, You may want to check to see if it’s getting fuel. The engine can run for almost 5 minutes with fuel in the bowl alone. Maybe it’s needing to be primed. Could be many things. Hope this helps.

@@azrailfan2717 hopefully it was just the classic dieseling noises before it quit. Keep me posted on what you find. We have a silver 06 CRD with a down cylinder. I believe it’s a head gasket issue. I found coolant in the oil after it went from running down the road fine to smoking and running rough. We’ll be getting that into the garage before to long for diagnosis and repair. Keep me posted if you want on your findings.

*UPDATE PT 2*. So I have all the glow plugs in with no issue. Yesterday I discovered why it would not turnover. I discovered that my neighbor (who owned it before me bought a cheap $55 Walmart battery with a maximum CCA of 585. The manufacture recommends 740, therefore I’m 155 CCA short. So this week I will swap out for a proper battery and post a video of the trial start up 😁

Update. Good news: The battery swap fixed the issues. Bad news it still keeps stalling. After some investigating, I discovered that the fuel return bridge/line is broken completely off (and the original owner tried to glue it back together 🤣. That explains. @@azrailfan2717 the heavy duty mount holds the alternator in. The circle mount on the front is only for the engine cover to mount on. If I remember right, the alternator mount has 2 holes that mount to the engine alone. The other hole is what the alternator is mounted too.

*UPDATE*. After a month (been super busy) or so I finally got the EGR elbow off and got all the glow plugs removed. Glow plug #4 (the one closet to the firewall has no part of the plug left at all. Today I was trying to install a new plug for #4 and the new plug just won’t go in. I put it into the spot and try to hand turn but the plug won’t go in (seems like either a part of the plug is still in there or it’s stripped). I can upload a video and comment the link to it sometime this weekend if that helps 😑. Thanks.

If the plug is is broken in half and the #4 glow plug hole is sealed, you might want to simply continue with replacing the 3 you were able to remove, start it up and inspect the overall health of the engine. Also, if the stalling issue remains or if it doesn't start, you may want to check the fuel filter to ensure it is fully tightened and primed/air bled.. We're keeping our fingers crossed for you!

@@2StallGarage Thanks 🤠. The best way I can describe is that when I install the #4 glow plug (one closet to the firewall) I would attempt to hand tight but it would spin but won’t go down and bite into the threads, therefore assuming that piece is still in there. However if I install the old busted plug, it would go in but would most likely still trip the check engine light. Going to put a video of it up in a moment to hopefully be helpful

Last winter, my block heater gave up the ghost. I had dealer look at it, they said too many parts are rusty, it they go in there might break a bunch of things and have to pull engine. So I said forget it. The Jeep started just fine without the block heater. But now this year it started terribly hard so I fear the glow plugs are kaputz. I can't complain, it now has 280,000 miles on the factory engine. When it was only three years old, It started up in the morning after a -20F evening. It was noisy at first but it started without the heater plugged in! It was a mens retreat and there were at least 30 cars, 6 did not start but my trusty diesel DID. So I was going around jump starting gas engine cars. LOL. I wonder if the fuel has any effect on the glow plugs. After all, they are in there the whole time the engine is running. There is a station near me that has biodiesel with 5-20% oil depending on if they can keep up with demand. I estimate 240,000 of the 280,000 miles were ran on that biodiesel. The injectors are from the factory, could that help protect them as well?

I agree with you. I found a sticker on the front timing cover that showed what voltage the system was on. Also, if they have you on a 5v system, you’d be better off putting the 7v plugs in because it would be underpowered vs over. Your plugs would last longer because they wouldn’t burn up as fast.
