How far you've come. Came back to this one after watching your '5 trails at Windrock' video with this jeep. I like the concept of the mushroom cap coming through the hood, but think I will go a little more upscale with it. Have been working on an airbox (made of steel sheet metal) that uses an Explorer filter that should fit in the area by the trans dipstick.

I made a mushroom style snorkel a few days ago (I also have a video). I agree with you about the height, because if I'm already putting on a snorkel I want to be safe. Mine comes out of the cowl. It is not exposed to branches, and even if it is, it is made of steel.

That 90 that you don't know the name of is a "Street 90". Personally coming off the intake i would of used a fernco. That way you can really tighten down the hoseclamp and have a true water tight seal. Then slide the street 90 into the fernco and tighten that down (another air-tight seal) and then glue the rest. Just my .02 as a plumber.

I know this vid is pretty old but the cfm rating on that filter is only 200. The engine flows 380 in total from throttle body to exhaust collector even though the stock throttle body flows 450. BUT, this is a very interesting concept that can be made more workable with some changes. This looks like good brain exercise while doing the "Stay at Home" thing to work out.

I made a similar intake on my f150. Not a snorkel but replaces the stock air tube with 4" thin PVC and used a K&N drop in filter. The tubing cost me less than $25 locally. But the lumber yard let me take parts to my truck and pre fit before I bought them haha.

Damn it Matt! Damn you!! All these good mods except a snorkel that I don't really need. Its always like, hmmm, I could use that, and that too, oh wow, how the hell did I live without that mod?. Ect ect. Here is a tip you may not know. Stock ranger wheels won't bolt up to a Jeep. stock Jeep wheels won't bolt up to a ranger either. Just bought some used eagle alloys that fit my jeep. They are 10 inches wide, with 31x10.50x15 Kelly Mt tires. My dad and me are building the Jeep together. My dad has over 20 years of experience as an auto body repair man, and he removed the stock fender flares and rolled the fender lips. The wheels are so heavily offset that the wheels stick out 6.5 inches past the fender. We are undecided on the snorkel though, I'm saying we need to run it up to the roof, he says run it into the cab. Which do you think would be better?

That heat shield does nothing. A heat shield functions by reflecting radiative heat, requiring an air-gap between surfaces. Not only does the black paint on your heat shield make it do the opposite (actually absorbs more heat - you should have left the bare metal exposed to better reflect in infrared) but the fact that it touches the engine and the PVC means the heat energy is transferred through conduction. You would be better off with NO heat shield and a small air-gap between the engine and the PVC. Hope it helps (with this or other projects)!
@TheRedRaven_7 жыл бұрын
Black paint has nothin to do with heat transfer in this case, you're thinking about light absorption. If it were me I would use thermo-tec paint (black), that stuff is like exhaust wrap but in paint form.
@brett-westgrove-country-music7 жыл бұрын
You're partially right in bringing up "light" in that most of this thermal energy is emitting in infrared "light". The rest, however, is not quiet right. The fact that we are dealing with large amounts of energy in the infrared frequencies means if you reflect it away, whatever is opposite the heat shield will stay cooler. Exhaust wrap is nothing like a heat shield and it is a bad comparison. Exhaust wrap is used to keep heat IN using a material with a low thermal conductivity (k) value (and often a black color because that is what now looks "cool"), but once again, that use case is conduction. A heat shield, in comparison, stands between objects and is intended to block heat from passing (ie: it reflects heat). Now, I may have been exaggerating how well his shield will function (it won't "do nothing") but basic thermodynamics will always point to a reflective or white surface, for heat rejection in infrared thermal conduction, and black for infrared thermal absorption. With black, more infrared energy will be absorbed into the heat shield. LOL, anyway, that got way to long but its cool, fascinating stuff.... and not really the point of the goofy video. haha

Have you checked the angle of your hose just under the snorkel hat with the hood shut? I am wondering how much it pinches that flex hose down if it all. If it does maybe using a rubber 90* intake hose off of a factory OBD1 ( and maybe others) air box might keep that from pinching. The stretch for when you open the hood would still come from the flex hose between the filter tube and the elbow. Such factory rubber elbows may also save you some fab work on the base of the snorkel hat and the throttle body.

Just curious, did rust problems occur after a while on your last car with similar modifications? The gas or vapours given off from heated P.V.C.mainly produces Hydrogen Chloride which can form of Hydrochloric Acid when mixed with water/steam. It can be still corrosive even if it does not attached to the water molecules. I would strongly recommend that you DO NOT to use P.V.C. at all in your engine bay.

For some time now I have been shopping for snorkles and they always involved either cutting 12 holes in the fender or some crazy routing involving cutting the engine bay...and I have always wondered why don't they make it go through the hood with a flexible hose? It would make the install much easier, quicker and less invasive. How has this worked for you?
@dangoleshootnetwork603610 жыл бұрын
I'm a little confused. I always thought that a snorkel redirected the exhaust for crossing rivers and such, so the engine didn't stall?
@dangerline959 жыл бұрын
No a snorkel brings the air intake up to keep it out of water
@dangoleshootnetwork60369 жыл бұрын
Jeepisking That's pretty deep water. You're talking about water at windshield level at that point aren't you? With water that deep couldn't the water also come through the tailpipe and stall the engine?
@dangerline959 жыл бұрын
If the vehicle is on, it will have enough pressure to not let water come back up the tailpipe, the snorkel up there on the hood to keep the filter dry for river crossings or if your going really fast through a large puddle You will more likely stall the engine with the water going through the intake, than the exhaust
