I bought a 1990 YJ in 97 with 69K miles. It was a 5 speed with a 4 cylinder. I used to drive it on the highway all the time. I had it over 100mph quite often (that is the hillbilly speed limit in Northern NH LOL) The only issue I ever had with it was not being able to have a cup of coffee in it without spilling it. I put 125K miles on it over 6 years then my son drove it for 2 years before he left for the Marines. At 230K miles it still looked and ran great. No rust, no major issues. It needed a clutch when I bought it and the front rotors had a recall but it was due for brakes then anyhow so that saved the labor cost of a front brake job.

I had a 1991 Geo Tracker and bought new out in the burbs of Chicago. I moved back to the far north side of Houston. My brother and I decided to go visit my Grandmother in San Antonio. On the way there I had the sunroof part of the softtop flipped back but still had the rest of the softtop on. Halfway to SA I got pulled over by the Texas Highway Dept and I pulled over and asked what was wrong? He said I caught you doing almost 100 mph. I started laughing. He said it's not funny and I said your exactly right the only way I was hitting 100 was falling off a cliff especially with the top open. The top might as well be a parachute to slow me down. Anyway he said he could have mixed us up and after checking my license, reg, and insurance he let us go. 100 mph? Those things had like 89 hamster power. I got stuck in a ditch and my friend pulled me out with his four wheeler. Man it would shake going down the freeway. By the time we got where we were going I had rheumatism and no fillings in my teeth.

I started out driving a Wrangler in the 90s and now have another one - as a toy - of the same approximate age as the first one. I really enjoy the ease at which the Jeep can be diagnosed and repaired by myself versus the extremely complicated modern vehicles. I do not feel the Jeep is particularly prone to breakdown versus some of the other brands I have driven (Mitsubishi, Audi, Kia, etc.).

I've had two DJ-5s which I bought from the post office for $600. When the first one died, I got another, also for $600. That's how much I liked them. For those of you who do not know, the DJ-5 is a Postal Jeep. The 1975 models I had came with an inline 6 engine. One of the spark plugs was practically unreachable because it was right up against the cab wall. I don't know what you call it. Another problem was that the DJ-5 requires 18lbs of pressure in the front tires and 26lbs of pressure in the rear. I discovered this the first time I had to put air in the ties. Eventually I replaced them and told the guy who put the brand new tires on NOT to put the standard 35lbs in them. He didn't listen to me, which I found out the hard way as soon as I pulled out of the tire shop. The vehicle was all over the road... no traction at all almost like driving on a slick track. Not only was the info in the vehicle's manual but also on a on a steel plate attached to the dash. Even so, I loved those little 'Light Utility Trucks' and which I had one to day, right hand drive and all.

He's afraid of them? Some people are not competent to do more than clutch the steering wheel in a death grip and never look more than 2 feet in front of them(mirrors?check your blind spot? Use signals?lights on in rain/night?get out of the left lane?not slam on the brakes at green lights?stay in a lane?park?parallel park?). If you are incompetent call someone to drive you miss daisy. Jeeps require slightly more than minimal ability and minor attention. The real reason he doesn't like them is they are straight forward,decently engineered,don't break unless abused,readily repaired and mostly owner maintained(no $ for him). What he didnt mention is the steer axle ujoint and all the rest are the same(keep 1-2 and some tools,easy fix),always have a spare starter and alternator(it's a jeep thing,you wouldn't understand),if you break something upgrade to better parts. 10mpg? Not even with a highly modified v8,gears,really big tires and loaded for camping unless it is way out of tune and improperly driven 15-20mpg city highway. Don't forget as Jerry said "she can jump like a Willy's in 4wd"

I owned a 95 yj 4 cyl, no power steering, it was a strip model but had flawless body, 33" tires, after market stereo, and nice all weather carpet, had only 90k miles, but it was very very slow and ate my pocket book up, wouldn't pass emissions unless I'd change catylic converter. Fun toy bad everyday like Scotty said.. New ones are garbage to, there made with cheap fiat parts..

When Jeep’s president says that people are buying the wrangler for the wrong reasons -that’s a red flag. He went on and essentially said these are not daily drivers.

I had a 57 Willis that was stock escept for the tires. It was geared so low (5:38). Top speed screaming 45 and that was all she had, but I could let the clutch out ideling and stand on the brakes and only slow it down in low range. That's pretty bad. They were dangerous as all get out.

I’ve had several jeeps from a jeep Cherokee XJ to a jeep grand Cherokee Laredo to a jeep patriot and as long as I have been taking care of them they’ve always served me well the problem is is that people use and abuse these vehicles and think that they can just go off running with them even though they are bare stock

I'm definitely thinking of buying a Jeep Patriot.
@michaelsorenson38873 жыл бұрын
People abuse the hell out of them, then sell them off to someone who doesn't know any better, and that's when all the mythical problems arise. I've seen AMC jeeps from new till hundreds of thousands of miles, only requiring regular maintenance. Seems that people expect all of them to be money pits straight out of the factory Now, after a certain point in time after chrysler got a hold of the name, that's a different story and a different jeep. Just don't buy someone Bubba always fixed himself and you should be just fine.
@donniefronterhouse77933 жыл бұрын
You might be mostly right. Jeep Patriots are junk just like most Chrysler products are junk just like the PT Cruiser etc. I truly believe the old AMC Jeeps were well built.
@michaelsorenson38873 жыл бұрын
@@donniefronterhouse7793 agreed, patriots are junk in my opinion. You "can" get a "good" one if it's been taken care of and such, but it still is not to the level of AMC and prior.

If you take care of them, they last forever…(Unless they get stolen, like my original ‘86 CJ-7)…
@randomoldguy39673 жыл бұрын
Actually that motor would benefit by adding a 4 barrel with the proper cfm for that size motor, and would get better gas mileage. That being said, a CJ that is in proper driving condition will run on the interstate just fine. I know because I have owned several back in the day. I saw that particular pos Jeep on Marketplace, and someone should have talked him out of buying it.

Ive been drivin a Jeep, and I mean a real Jeep, everyday since I was 17. And for me, they are the only thing I would consider driving as a daily. All American, 4wd, convertible, easy and cheap to fix makes up for the gas usage, and they are very dependable. I drove a cj5 everyday for 7 years, has a 258 straight 6, went from ny to fla pulling a trailer, went the highway the whole way. Love it, still have it. Also have a tj for comfort reasons lol but remember this, the Jeep will go anywhere forever, just depends on if you will, lol they aint for everyone, but they are for me. Great vid, keep it up.

If I won the lottery I would buy 3 or 4 of them to have for spares!

My 98 tj... got 20mpg, went anywhere, and was easy to work on. Even thought I didn't need to work on it, it was very dependable. I've owned several all of them were dependable, and easy on gas. You got a bad example of a jeep that jeep is worth $500 not $3000... 06 was the last year for a good jeep, 87 the last year for a great jeep. And willys jeep were by far the best.. Jeeps were prone to rust because the people that bought them loved to play in the mud and didnt care to keep them clean. I have a 57 willys cj6 its not something you want to drive down I77 but it will still be running after any new car or suv, has been scraped.

2018 JL Rubicon 2DR Standard 64k km Defective steering stabilizer Rear main seal leak (2x) Phaser 'failure' Locker system wiring ziptied too tight from factory, broken wires triggering dashlight warnings ( this issue was checked at several dealerships, and ultimately, they refused to honor the warranty, and did not fix the issue in over 6 visits, 3 different dealerships, claiming it was everything from the PCM to a sensor in the diff... I fixed the issue myself in 15min, the day my warranty was up....) Defective clutch ( mentioned off - record by dealership staff before recall, staff said "clutch feels kinda weird" this was within 15k km , recall issued on clutch later , taken for "test" clutch reported as fine, and I walked away with what may be a busted input shaft... ) Yea it is a love - hate relationship. I love it so much, I gotta get rid of her...

Noted a lot of old Jeeps are not safe @ now highway speeds, but the new Jeeps they are great. I love my new 2021 Sarge Green Jeep Wrangler unlimited sport with a 8 speed automatic transmission & a 2.0 turbo engine, I get 26 MPG combined highway/city. It also drives nicely @ 70 MPH (113 km/h), not as smoothly as a Lincoln Continental, but I would kill all cars & most SUV's on the Rubicon Trail, but not my trail rated Jeep, when in 4WD low!

For a jeep toy id get the keep XJ Cherokee with the 4.0 straight 6. Solid front axel, highway ready, endlessly upgradable... it’s like a cheaper 4Runner. Cheaper in both price and build quality but maybe even more off-road capable out of the box than the 4Runner
