Jeep Sway Bar Disconnect Install - Rubicon Express

In this video I will show you how to install a sway bar disconnect system on your Jeep. This process is similar to other Jeep models such as the Grand Cherokee, Comanche, and Wrangler. But today I will show you how to do it on a Jeep Cherokee XJ. Today I will show you how to do the whole job from start to finish and how to determine the right angle for best ride quality. On the drop brackets ..... You recommend adding on a 4.5 lift ?

Always safer to put bolts in from top to bottom and front to rear when ever possible. If the nut falls off you have a better chance of not losing the bolt. Anti seize on bolts with nylon castle nuts can defeats the purpose of the self locking effect of the nylon to the bolt thread. From an old aircraft mechanic. Thanks for the video, great job! Glad to see you've finally got some cordless power tools. Makes some jobs so much easier, right? Just wondering about the sway bar drop, could you have done the brackets one side at a time? This would have made it easier as a one man job. Looking at the drop brackets, but I will probably weld the nuts on the sway bar side (top, bolts up from the bottom). I did a 3" Zone Off-road with new springs front and rear, so I won't be doing the links, drop bracket only.

You could probably do one side at a time and have all the hardware loose till the end then tighten everything down.

I installed a Rubicon Express 4.5 super flex lift on my 96 Cherokee and none of my grease zerks will take grease. Any one else have this have this problem? I love the ride quality of the lift and the flexibility is great .

The ball bearing inside the zerk might be stuck. Could trying replacing them with some from a parts store or try forcing some grease out the tube into them. I know might have gotten seized before.

Either the zerk fitting is messed up and needs to be replaced or your grease gun might not be working properly or the joints could be old and the grease could turn hard in there preventing new grease from going in.

Did you have any issues with with sway bar being higher lower on each side? I got my passenger side 15 degrees but for some reason my driver side doesn't fit the same sits at 20-25 degrees. The driver link Is currently sitting diagonal idk if I should shorten it. I assumed if I made the links the same height it would work fine, but idk if it will work the same one being longer than the other. Thanks

I would keep the links the same length. If it doesn't want to connect you might have to compress the suspension and such to fasten them in. They could not be lining up from an non level surface the jeep is on or a sag or lean in the suspension. Either way having the links the same size should correct that to have the Jeep sitting level.

Yup you can, I party did the same thing on his Jeep. But if you are going any wider than that I would suggest bigger rims.

99 In my opinion was the best year with a new intake manifold, hp dana 30 and still have a distributor. But other years are still good. As far as mileage, it all comes to previous maintenance. Don't let over 200k miles scare you, mine is at 252k and I have a 99 with 303k and they are still running strong.

Just put these on my 96. Did you mount the sway bar anchors for when you have them disconnected. If so, where do you mount them to get the inks up and out of the way while you're wheeling.

This kit actually didnt come with anchors but my bushings are nice and tight so it stays folded up. Sometimes I just add a ziptie to hold it up if I'm wheeling all weekend.

@@OutJeeping thanks for the feedback. The kit I got had 2 aluminium studs to be put somewhere in the wheel opening. I'll see if I can find a spot for them that wont bind or rub components when the sway bar is disconnected.

Austin, I’m curious where do you stow away the disconnect bars when disconnected? The reason I ask is because I have a '98 XJ in the shop getting a RE 3 1/2" lift and the shop owner says that RE changed the brackets that connect the links to the sway bar, and now there's no easy practical way when the brackets swing out of the way to stow them against the frame as I’ve seen in other kits. Teraflex has nylon straps in their kit, which will end up being the solution for the RE kit. Interested in your solution.

If your bushings are tight like mine I was able to have it hold up on it's own otherwise I did ziptie them one time when I was offroading for a weekend. I still do need to find a permanent solution myself.

@OutJeeping did you guys ever figure something out??? My Rough country had something to connect them to but these do not and since you cant swing them up all the way due to the design i find it very hard to place them out of the way when I go offroading.

@@xclusive760 I ended up buying some straps from Home Depot "17 in. Heavy-Duty Storage Strap - Multi-Purpose Hook and Loop Hose Strap with Grommet in Black (6-Pack)" and mounted them to the fender well. They keep my disconnects out of the way when wheeling, since with my 33's on my 98 XJ, the tires were alway knocking off the lynch pins while I was wheeling. (147) Questions & Answers

In 2wd no but in 4wd if you got good traction, turning will be a little stiff

Not necessarily, with my 3 link suspension it pushes the axle more forward and the holes on the drop bracket are offset to set the sway bar a sits a little more forward as well.
