Here I cover some tips to help identify if your thermostat is opening and closing properly. It's as easy as watching your hoses and feeling them as your car engine warms up. I also show where the Jeep Wrangler 4.0 temperature sending unit is located and discuss the coolant thermostat.
Temperature Sending Switch amzn.to/2F6Msjv
(located towards back of engine on driver side)
Sends signal to temperature gauge in cab.
Thermostat housing sensor amzn.to/2FM6jl7
(located on the thermostat housing. Coolant temperature)
A few of my favorite tools:
Dewalt 1/4 impact driver
amzn.to/2GYEJ4w
Be sure to get the kit with 2 batteries. You'll be glad you did!
Craftsman 165 Mechanics Tool Set

Excellent tool set that will last a lifetime.
1/2" Craftsman Impact Driver I use. Love this thing

I live on a tropical region, therefore I installed a 160 degree thermostat along with a new water pump, radiator and auxiliary transmission fluid cooler. I run the stock fan setup and also have a 3 year old fan clutch. It runs at 210 on the dashboard but sometimes it runs a little hot. I changed the sending unit 2 times and no change. I installed a separate temp gauge and placed the sensor on the radiator drain plug hole. And it stays at 180 and max out at 200

Great info on the "heater" trick. If the heat coming out of your vents in the cab isn't HOT after the engine has been operating for awhile, check the thermostat and radiator hoses for temperature differences. If they are about the same, most likely the thermostat is stuck OPEN. This is the first thing I ask customers, "Does the heat coming out of your vents seem warm or hot?" Also forgot to mention the tid-bit about the radiator fan. If the engine is up at operating temperature and the thermostat opens but the temperature isn't decreasing, the computer will have the radiator fan operate. If the fan doesn't work, then that's another path to troubleshoot. Two different options here if the thermostat is GOOD so you are looking at the radiator fan now: 1) If the engine is running cold, verify the fan isn't ON constantly. 2) If the engine is running hot, verify the fan does turn ON when commanded. Most of the time, you can use a scan tool to operate the fan electronically. If you don't have a tool, pull the plug for the fan (not sure how to do it on an older vehicle with a fan clutch) and apply 12VDC to the pins/sockets. The fan doesn't always run at FULL speed, so 9 to 12 volts is a good test to verify the fan operating speeds (less voltage means lower fan speed, higher voltage means higher fan speed). I use a 9V battery for a lower voltage test. If the voltage test works and the fan is operational, then work back to the sending unit, coolant temp sensor, or the relay/control module to verify that it's putting out the correct voltage when needed, or operating at all. You can get into the weeds on this error, but time put forth up front will save you money and time later on if the problem isn't diagnosed properly the first time. You hit all of the other key points.

My BMW 2004 model....has been running cold...last night ..in a split second it went to the H.... however....the car didn't overheat....is that a false reading? I checked the cylinder heads..and oil....it didn't look frothy.. etc...so I didn't blow a head gasket. I was told it is either the thermostat or the coolant temperature sensor...any advice?
@willthethrill360
@willthethrill360 2 жыл бұрын
@@williambernstein4313 if it spikes randomly, most likely wiring to the sensor. Wiggle the wiring and have someone else watch the gauge. If it doesn't fluctuate, possible sensor. Worst case, your ECM is going nuts. Hate BMW/Mercedes for their wiring and computer issues. Thermostats don't react in the blink of an eye, so I would put that further down on the troubleshooting list.

Appreciate your videos. I have a 95 yj, 4cl, 210k kms. Runs well, no leaks, but the temp gauge fluctuates a bit when up to operating temp, briefly showing a little hotter while driving, though most dead centre on the gauge while driving, and always dead centre when idling in traffic. When I turn the engine off but leave the key in acc, the gauge often runs up another 10 degrees C or so, to the next line on the gauge, but not to the warning line. It settles to the middle line as soon as I start it back up. Heat works great. Original rad, no visible leaks and I keep an eye on the coolant level both in the rad and reservoir, but I do faintly smell coolant sometimes when close to the rad after driving. Newer rad cap, new heater core and rad hoses this winter. I rebled the system thinking might be air. Haven't changed the t-stat though. Suggestions?

What are your thoughts on this. YJ ran fine at 210 degrees. I just did a flush of the radiator system. Now, when I turn the key to the first position when the engine is cold the temperature gage immediately jumps to the dash mark just passed 100° (120ish?) and I run warm at 230ish..I just replaced the rear sensor. Thoughts? Thanks in advance and appreciate your help.

I have a 1992 Jeep YJ with a 2.5 engine. I have only one sensor. My gauge is not working but other gauges are working in the cluster. When I bought the Jeep someone had put an after market temp gauge in. Changed the sensor at the thermostat housing. It worked. I found the old sensor still plugged into the wiring plug harness. I put a new sensor in the where the aftermarket was and plugged the original plug back in. The original gauge still didn't work. Also the aftermarket didn't work. I suspect the original wiring may be cut some place under the dash. As mentioned other gauges are working in the cluster. Thoughts. Your videos are good and enjoy them. I just want the original to work. Thank you. P.S. I do not have another sensor at the back of the engine any where arrond the head. I have looked and felt many times. Is this a 4.0 addition?

My little diagnostic test for the thermostat off a cold start is to watch the temperature gauge as the engine warms up. When it hits the thermostat opening temp (195° for my YJ) the temperature on the gauge will suddenly drop when the cold radiator starts circulating. I personally have never ever had one stick open but your explanation on how to tell if it stuck open is correct. I have run plenty of engines with no thermostat in a pinch and the exact behavior you described as stuck open occurs. In a pinch on the road if your thermostat does fail stuck closed, you can remove it. I did that once and salvaged the torn gasket and used my wives finger nail polish for gasket sealer!

I have 1992 Jeep Cherokee XJ with all stock parts in it. My problem is my Jeep takes awhile to heat up and does NOT hold the heat in the cab very when it’s not running or driving down the freeway. It used to get pretty toasty before the large metal fuse on the back on my van speed control fried up. We thought it was my fan blowing motor cause that died when the fuse controller died so we replaced my fan blower (which needed replacing anyways due to a loud motor) and then we pulled my dash off and looked behind the control unit and found the fried unit. Right now we have the blower power spliced to hot wire so it will turn on. We do not have a replacement controller yet, my Jeep heats up after running awhile and everything but I feel like it’s suppose to heat up faster then it does (right now it takes about 45 mins to be comfortable with a high idle, and or many stops and restarts from running around in town. ) my thoughts are it could be a heater core issue, or my vents are stuck on halfway open cause the unit fried while my boyfriend was adjusting the speed on the fan. (But my fan sounds like it’s running on high) I also have a vacuum leak running from my HVAC under my fender. Would this vacuum line running along my whole under hood be a reason for my lack on heat in my vents? Only my defrosters on my dash blows out a significant amount of heat. Please help. It’s cold in Michigan lol.

Thread size of the temperature sensor please?? Can't find the spec anywhere. I've got a renix era Cherokee that I'm in the process of making roadworthy. The thermostat housing that came on my Jeep doesn't have a spot to thread in a temperature sensor. So I'm gonna spend the $13 on a newer style thermostat housing in hopes of putting a jegs water temperature gauge and sensor on it. The jegs kit comes with a 1/2" NPT adapter, just wondering if this is possible before I waste $50. I already have the cooling off my Jeep taken care of, now I'm just looking for a way to monitor my temps as I'm going down the road. Dummy light isn't good enough for me.

Okay I am about ready to give up, I have 04 4.0 with 222k I had what I thought was the radiator go out, as I saw coolant dripping down the side of the radiator. I flushed the green coolant out because I understood it to be the wrong coolant. It was very cold still is, took me a few days to get the new coolant in because the radiator is very hard to get in past the ac lines. Changed the battery and thermostat. I have an engine overheating issue and no heat. Problem is I can't get the air out of the system. Is it possible that I had distilled water freeze up in the bottom of the engine? I don't see the fan running. My driveway does not get sun to warm up the jeep. What would you suggest? Is it time to give up on my jeep?

Hello. I have a YJ-95. Driving the car, I got eventually the check engine turned on. If I turn off the YJ and restart it, the check engine is turned off and it doesn’t appear again at least for the rest of that day. The fault code I get is the 52: oxygen sensor - rich condition indicated. Time ago, I changed the oxygen sensor. At the beginning it got better, but it started again. I found in other video that other reason to get a rich air/fuel mixture could be driving the car in a wrong temperature condition. I checked that the temperature gauge shows a low temperature. Thanks your video I checked out that the coolant temperature sending unit is the one that is shown in the gauge and it has an intermittent false contact. Do you have the part number of this temperature sensor? Do you think this sensor could affect the rich air/fuel mixture or what else could I check? Thanks

I am having these issues, about a year ago I noticed fluctuation so while doing an oil change I replaced the thermostat a short time later I purchased a heads up display as I was having issues with the dash being to dark in daylight and having to turn parking lights on to see the speedo well ( the heads up works great) it has 5 readouts one being water temp, everything has been good up until two weeks ago sitting in traffic on a hot day I watched both gauges working hand in hand raising temp to the point of the heads up setting off an alarm so I pulled into a parking lot and let it cool, I found the water was low never having leaks no oil in water and no water in oil I filled water in Radiator and overflow to correct level also tried burping, things seemed to be ok until last night driving 20 miles to a friends before leaving I check water and oil and they were just as they should be and all was good until leaving it was another hot evening at sundown so I turned the A/C on after a couple of miles I noticed the. temp on both gauges was about 130 and fluctuated up to 145 and back so I tried turning the heater on and with my hand in front of the vent the hot air felt like it was plenty warn and right where it should be but the gauges stay low for another 10 miles home, this morning after checking water and oil I went for a ride temp came up and stoped where it was last night 130's-140's after a while I turned the heater on again on was feeling like its normal 180 so now the only thing I can think of is it being the temp sensor........ any thoughts?

I own a 2003 JGC WJ w/4.0 and it just pulled a code P1281 today. That code is for the engine running too cool initially. I had just put in a new t-stat about two weeks before. I took apart the t-stat housing and wouldn't you know it, the t-stat was stuck open. So, if you have that P1281 code or your vehicle takes a long time to get up to operating temperature, consider replacing the t-stat.

Ive got a 2012 Chrysler 200 3.6. it's overheating. I've replaced the water pump, oil cooler, thermostat, hoses. I replaced the radiator about 3 yrs ago. after replacing these parts, it's still overheating but doesn't start overheating until I've been on freeway for about 15 min. only thing I can thing of is the radiator needs replacing. it's the only thing left. I have no leaks at all and no water in my oil . any ideas what it is. I only have a coolant reservoir cap , not a radiator cap and I replaced it as well. any help you can give me?

I change both thermostat and temp sensor on a 2014 durango rt and still doing the same only on 40° below weather. FYI I bought an after market stat!!!! And I think the sensor too! And fan turns on crazy high if I'm in a Incline but if I reverse and park it fan turns on only when needed. Same as parking at level ground turns on when needed. Any help?

If you have a problem with a P0188 or something related to that, always look at your temperature sensor plug to make sure you don't have a bad wire on that, that is what my problem came from. Very simple but it will give a P0188 code like mine has. Check the voltage on the plug if the wire is not appearing broken to make sure you have voltage there. Simple fix though. If it is broken or the wire is off, get a new plug connector for the sensor at somewhere like O'Reilly's.

Hey Dale,, I would like to know if you can tell me something, or possibly do a test for me and let me know the results, I have been trying to figure out a misfire/ engine surging issue with my 1995 ZJ with the 4.0 engine. And sin😮ce you have a jeep with a OBD 1 ECM. It should be similar. When I test all of the sensors for reference Circuit voltage, With the Key On and the Engine Off , I get steady Voltage readings, Except for when I connect a volt meter to the Two wires for the coolant temperature sensor circuit that is on the thermostat housing, The voltage fluctuates between around 4 to 5 volts At all different readings. Instead of being a steady reading of 5 volts. I have tested Everything possible, and it is the ECM that is giving these readings. I also tried another ECM from a salvage yard and it does the same thing. So I am wondering if I have two ECMs that have issues. Or are they both doing what they are supposed to. And is the misfire being caused by something else. Since you are good at figuring things out, and you like to learn, I thought I would ask you. And if you make a video about it you could maybe help out some other people that have jeeps with the OBD 1 ECM System. Thank you, Tim from Wisconsin.

I'm sure you've repaired the lower rad hose leak by now. Every time I find one of those spring clamps on a vehicle I'm working on it gets tossed to the scrap bin and replaced with something that actually works. Even a cheap gear clamp is preferable to any spring type.

Hi the issue I see with daughters 2018 Jeep Renegade Is as the engine warms up coolant escapes through the overflow on the coolant reservoir. I am assuming this is do to a thermostat that is not opening so as the the engine warms up and the coolant heats up as it is expelled the water that should be going into the engine isn't so it is forced out the overflow. It was a little low last time I changed the oli which was 8 months 6,000 Miles. She brought the car saying there was a funny smell, Coolant was almost a 3/4 of a gallon low and oil was a quart low. I change the oil, which was pretty burnt, filled up the radiator an as the car ran and warmed up the coolant level in the reservoir rose past the max level to the top of the cap. Or am I totally wrong ad its a water pump? Please let me know what you think. or anyone else thanks again

I have 2011 dodge durango crew 5.7 hemi . My temp.is fluctuating it use to sit right above the mark before middle mark. But now it's up down when I take off from stop light it goes up when I sit at light it goes up. I either have to have heater cools it best but air conditioner keeps it from going way up. I can't sit and idle but when driving even the littlest hill will make it rise I understand it fluctuates a little but if I don't have air or heater going it keeps going up above 230. I changed water pump and thats when it started. I replaced radiator I've replaced the thermastat. Should I change temp sensor or what should I do. Oh yea had it flushed twice but when it's cool our it does a lot better but it's starting to get warn again n im seeing the high temps again. HELP.

Hi I'm brand new to the channel and I have a hell of a question for you. I have a 2012 Wrangler sport with a brand new thermostat and my radiator fan is running incredibly loud minutes after driving and stays on non stop until I shut down. My temperature Guage climbs over half way minutes after driving. Then settles on the half way mark. I just don't get it. If you could offer any advice it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you
@JeepSolid
@JeepSolid 4 жыл бұрын
You thermostat should be closed until the car reaches operating temp. Then it opens allowing coolant to flow through radiator. That may be what you're seeing. The temp goes up, thermostat opens and brings it down a bit. Check the temperature rating of your thermostat. Is it a 203 degree thermostat? Your jeep should be running around that temp.

Might be an XJ cylinder head which didn't come with that spot for the sensor. Could try putting a "T" fitting in off of the heater core hose. This is what I am currently stuck doing as a previous owner cut the wire for my OEM temp sensor.
