Jeep Wrangler JK 3.6L Valve Cover Gasket Passenger Side & PCV Valve replacement

This detailed video shows you how to replace your passenger side valve cover gasket on your Jeep Wrangler JK 3.6 L. It shows you step by step (start to finish) how to approach this task in your home garage. Many other videos show you when using a commercial car lift but this will show you how to access everything from a home garage.
What makes this video unique is we gain full access to the valve cover by first removing the battery box tray located on the passenger side. We do not remove the tire nor inner fenders. This video also includes how to remove and replace your PCV valve, your PCV hose, ignition coils, gaskets, as well as refilling your vehicle with coolant. There are many notes and highlights capturing information about next steps. Spark plugs are not changed in this video but access to them is shown.
The gasket kit and other materials used in this video are the following:
Gasket Kit - MAHLE (for both sides) VS50657
Mopar 50/50 Coolant (OAT) - 90032
Dorman PCV Valve - 46835
ARES - No Spill Coolant Funnel Set 71004

What a PITA indeed. I changed my PCV valve and took the battery tray out to do it. Lots of cussing and bloody knuckles but got it done. Said to myself if I ever had to replace the PCV valve again I would just throw the jeep out. Lol. Well…..I’ll be dealing with it again since I have to replace the valve cover gasket and also fix the ticking issue with the rocker arms. Wish I did all at the same time but such is life.

@@JohnsJeepGaragethanks man. And agreed. I may do the oil cooler housing while I’m doing all this. I had to replace it 5 years ago. I’m sure I’m on thin ice and may as well put a new one in. Love Jeep and this is my second one but I’m done after this. They just aren’t worth it. Too many bs repairs and shoddy quality.

You can use a piece of 1 inch pvc if you don't have the 1 1/16 inch socket. Works perfect as well in case anyone was wondering.

Im in the middle of changing out this valve cover at the moment and watching video but i didnt have a 1 that socket but i am an hvac guy so the 1 inch pvc worked like a charm lol​@@JohnsJeepGarage

I’m not certain if it happened after you changed both covers or if it’s an existing problem. If the change happened right after my assumption is something may have been impacted with the wiring. Be sure to check your oil gallery bolts ALL FOUR of mine were loose , one about all the way to falling into the timing chain

@@JohnsJeepGarage Doesn't hurt to check while ya got it opened up right ? The only reason I looked at mine was because I read several others on the Jk forums with the same issue. I snuck a 13 box wrench behind the chain loosened them cleaned them in place and blue loctite before wrenching them back down TIGHT

Friend of ours has a Jeep with an oil leak. I figured it was the oil cooler. Got the manifold out to find the oil cooler perfect…bone dry. Looking at it closer, the passenger side valve cover appears to be leaking back by the rear corner ( near the PCV). Is it common for just the PCV to leak? I am going to recommend doing the valve cover gasket set and probably doing a new pcv too…

It is possible. On the JK, the valve cover gasket is a common issue and usually shows on the back corner. You need to remove the PCV valve to remove the cover so I always suggest doing that change. Without seeing it I would guess somewhere on the gasket is leaking based on your description. Thank you for watching.

Your PVC can wreak more havoc then just a leak . A clogged up one will F some S up.

Good video thanks I used for my valve cover replacement….i got everything back together and I had lights on the dash, but it won’t crank over when you go to start. There’s nothing have any ideas. I really would appreciate it.

Sorry to hear that. I can offer some troubleshooting suggestions but also have a couple questions. If it doesn't crank or even turn over, I believe you may have disconnected something in the fusebox or possibly blown a fuse. When it doesn't turn over ... I think fuse, battery and alternator (if you disconnected it). If it turns over but doesn't start, then I look back at the connections for the ignition coils or fuel injectors. Since it started before you did this, I can only think of what may have changed.

I see your name references TX so I assume you are in Texas. Call the Jeep Slop Shop in Kemah, Texas. They do many engine swaps and may know of some options or have one. Most of who I know who would have one is due to some damage and it needs to be rebuilt. There are some rebuilt crate 3.6L online as well. There are many online as well but you may find once you pay for shipping, it may be better to pick one up from a shop.
