Im currently finishing up a 2001 land rover discovery with an OM602 5 cyl turbo diesel. I can definitely agree that there is alot of work needed but in the end hopefully itll all pay off. Alfons, hi from Australia, watched your whole Jeep/Merc diesel swap series yesterday. Really enjoyed the whole thing, the banter between you and your mate Kurt reminds me of a friend of mine and the work relationship we have working on LandRover projects here in our little Far North remote country town, we're a bit older than you guys, (70 years and 78 years), but we have that, argumentative, have fun, pay each other out interplay friendship, you and Kurt look to have. I'll be watching for more builds.

Hii bro, awesome project, i have Yj 89 and i put mercedes diesel engine 3.0 and i feel that i have power, but speed is suck, and on hill it is going really sloww, did u change something from transmission?
@AlfonsLC
@AlfonsLC 4 жыл бұрын
Nope. Mine does fine. But you cant drive it like a gas engine. You have to have the turbo spooled up before the hill and keep it spooled up. It walks up every hill that way. Its like driving a kenworth RMP is everything.

@AlfonsLC
@AlfonsLC 3 жыл бұрын
I’d have to see it more closely. And you really need to check the engine for blow by and other problems before you buy anything. They can be an expensive repair. If everything is in order that seems like a bargain. And that’s what makes me suspicious. I would love to crawl around Anita and look at it for you

Alfons, just finished watching all 10 videos. I must say, Kirk is my spirit animal, lol. I started a conversion in 2003, in early 2004 we got the OM617 into a Jeep Comanche and it was my daily driver until Katrina in 2005 (it saltwater flooded, but I still have it). To watch you go through the process made me appreciate the time I spent with my buddy doing the conversion. It really is an adventure. I'd love to see my buddy and Kirk in the same shop (might be a fight between Kirk's chickens and my buddy's cats, all else otherwise similar, lol).

Enjoyed this immensely. In the back of your mind, there's got to be some things you overlooked, but hey, it's done -- mostly. This Kirk ... man, what a character. What I don't get is how you'd go to him before some Merc specialist or conversion shop. Just looking at Kirk's shop ... not exactly a "detail" kinda guy. endearing and maddening at the same time. But that's all part of the fun, the experience. I am purchasing a 2008 Jeep Commander and saving my social-distancing pennies for a Cummins 2.8 Crate conversion aimed at fire-road exploring, greenlane travel and camping. I have to tell you, that M-B 5-cyl. was a great choice and such a good deal. The sound of it is truly bad-ass!

This build has inspired me to continue with my Merc OM617 turbo into my CJ7. Like Kirk, I was more of a GM guy, and my last CJ had a tuned 4-bolt 350 with Holley 650 double pumper, but it was how many gallons per mile. The cost benefit of the Mercedes over the 4bt is also proven. While we aren't entirely the first pioneers of diesel swaps, I know it takes time and Kirk-ability to think outside the box for the needed workarounds. God bless you both for sticking with it, and posting.

I was just searching around on KZbin for some builds to see if I should do the swap I’m thinking about and I think this vid sold me on it. My dad has this 1963 gmc 1500 I tried fixing last summer (turns out unseizing it was not worth it since it also rodknocked like nothing else) and also a grey market 87 Mercedes in horrible condition other than mechanical (I think it should be an om603). I was throwing around the idea of putting the entire drive train from the Mercedes with the auto trans into the gmc to make a decent running truck. I was worried it would be too weak but with a turbo it should be more than enough for what I want, seeing how this thing drives. I just saw the manual shut off as well, and that was the exact thing my dad was saying he wanted 😂. I’m going to watch the whole build series through and see if it’s viable for me. Awesome build.

A Guy Named Alfons that manual shut off definitely beats my dad’s option. Idk what exactly went wrong, but one day (back when he drove the 300d back and forth between Arizona and California, running on raw cooking oil with broken radiator fans), the thing wouldn’t shut off when he turned key to the off position. His solution was pinching some vacuum line or something in the engine bay every time he needed to shut it off. I thought it was just another sign that this thing was invincible and never going to die. I personally think the manual shut off you installed is cool and adds character. I’d like it so that on winter mornings, I can just turn on the truck, lock the door, and let it heat up while being a bit more secure than just leaving it completely unattended with unlocked doors and the keys in the ignition. I’ll definitely take the information from this series into consideration but hopefully, it should go a bit more smoothly since this engine currently doesn’t leak from anywhere, and I’m using the transmission it has. I just have to measure it all out this weekend, see how viable it is, and get a game plan going.

Well. Im not sure. But your trans may require vacuum. I have and wanted a few open lines from the pump to use for the 4x4. Im going to hook it up in a future video. When i get the jeep trial ready with new tires flares and a working 4x4 system. Im glad someone likes the shut off and the way we did it. Thrilled. First compliment i got on it and we were cery proud making it and designing the throttle and shut off adapter.

I think for me. It was the more difficult and costly because i start with an all stock jeep. Needed lifting. Also. The engine leaks we wanted fixed. If you start out lifted you will have a much easier time. Engine fitment is toughest ! Thanks for checking in !

@@AlfonsLC I can't wait to see your next build! I want to do a build of my own but I'm stuck on deciding which is cheaper, weather to buy a Jeep with wheels, suspension and driveline done ready to drop in the diesel or buy one that's diesel swapped already, preferably 5 or 6 speed manual, any advice would be appreciated
@AlfonsLC

Maxpower36912 if you think you can do all the stuff me and kirk did on your own. It may be cheaper to build. More satisfying and maddening both. But if you cant do the work yourself. Just buy one that is really well checked out. These engines are really really good. If they are taken care of perfectly.

Mike Brown Ohio i like the 880 better personally. Steers better. Better climate control system. But an extended w900 has more room to kick back. Either way. Love the KWs ! That cool you used to work in a plant ?
