Jeep also had a big recall on their pistons in their 4.0s. I had to replace all 6 of my pistons in my 02 4.0L tj. They crack on the skirt. I was able to see the cracks in the skirt when I dropped the oil pan. I initially thought it was only one, but after taking them all out, they all had small cracks.

Also if you have to redo the head, what I did was took my old head bolts and cut the heads off, grinded them to a taper, and cut a slot at the top so that I could use them as alignment dowels for the head, and remove them with a flat head screwdriver.

What symptoms did you have with the cracked piston skirts? I'd not heard of that issue with these Jeeps yet.

@@cameronh5442 Ah yes those were cracked alright. I've had other engines with cracked skirts before and sounded the same.
