Not only was this video incredibly informative while I chase down my rough idle and cylinder 3 & 4 misfire due to heat soak, watching your interactions with your son made my night. Great stuff, I look forward to more informative XJ repairs from you and your son!

Good, concise, informative, and nicely edited. I love the overlays you put on there, because as a beginner, I have no idea what I am looking at when looking at my XJ's engine bay LOL. Learned something new. My XJ has been having a rough start to the point where I had to pump the accelerator for it to even start. But today, it started, stalled, then never was able to start back up. Starter still turns over though. Looks like I am gonna be cleaning the Throttle Body of my '98 XJ.

Thanks! Trouble shooting anything in the engine bay can be a daunting task for sure - especially when a "symptom" can have multiple potential culprits. Fingers crossed a cleaning does the trick for you. If not, you may want to check the TPS sensor too.

If you have a friend with a lathe, i suggest doing an intake manifold match to the throttle body. The bottom of the TB is about 55mm give or take, and the IM is roughly 61.5 to 62.25mm. I bored mine to just below the butterfly on the short side and the idle is significantly smoother, and a snappier throttle response. Happy new years to you both!

Going to do this tomorrow. My jeep is stalling, rough idling and I swapped out the TPS SENSOR and it was running fine for a few days, up until today. Bought a new IAC sensor, replaced it and it is still doing the same thing. Wanting to stall and high RPMs. Cleaned what I could since it got dark and I have to be up at 4AM for work lol but thank you for this.

@@sandbox_adventures Hey brother! Hope you guys are doing well. So I took the CPS off. There’s no serial number on it… obviously aftermarket lol. OEM parts only right? Mopar?
@sandbox_adventures
@sandbox_adventures 11 ай бұрын
Doing great, thanks! working on getting a new rear bumper installed. So we tried ordering a Mopar CPS but the shipment kept being pushed back week after week- may have been a Covid supply chain related 🤷‍♂️. We ended up using Duralast from Autozone because I grew impatient and Preston wanted to go to the off-road park. But yes, id go Mopar if you can find one because the aftermarket ones tend to have quality control issues.

He has caught you making mistakes. 😊 He has a eagle eye and actually comes up with good suggestions and questions. That’s great that you spend that kind of quality time with him and you have the patience of a saint. If you don’t mind my asking, what kind of condition does he have? I have a ‘93 Jeep Cherokee Sport 2dr so I like the play by play I fo you put out. Keep up the good work and awesome family time.

Well that is a bummer. If it’s the annoying P1319 code popping up, there are a couple other potential causes. The crankshaft position sensor (CPS) is the next most likely culprit. That ultimately was our issue and we’ve been good since replacing it. Preston and I made a video on how to swap that out too.

I haven’t personally owned or worked on a car with a carburetor, but I imagine better air flow from cleaning the carb would lead to a better fuel mixture and possibly affect your RPMs. Good luck!

how did you repair the wire after stabbing it
@sandbox_adventures
@sandbox_adventures 5 ай бұрын
The multi meter prong should be able to get a reading without actually puncturing the protective wire coating. But if it did, I’d use some electrical tape to cover it. If the wire somehow got really damage (very unlikely really), I’d splice it with a solder stick connection.

Would it turn over and start at all prior to waiting 30min?
@FRKMECHARENAphakor
@FRKMECHARENAphakor 23 күн бұрын
@@sandbox_adventuresI'm guessing no, just cranking but no turn over, as I also was having this happen, especially after stopping for coffee in the am , turned into ,if I stopped at all for more than 3 mins , I'd be stuck there for 30-45 mins before it would actually start, threw a coil, plugs , tps , iac ,iat, map, cam and crank, and same issue, then heard about checking cam sync and low and behold instead of reading zero, I was at 15/19 degrees out, I synced it back to -2/0 degrees, and it was a lot better , and starts Everytime , buuuut, it still hiccups here and there, especially after getting almost home after catching some traffic early in the ride , and several times I've stalled within 5 mins of my house . But short trips have seemed ok, til this morning (only a week after all those parts) went to get coffee, and 5 mins into the drive(it's 17° out) , I rounded a corner (with half a tank), and it immediately started to bog down , and was barely able to limp it home , started it right up after , but it bucks and bogs around 1200 rpms, but idles ok , already leaving for work 2hrs early to avoid traffic, but now I'm afraid that won't even help, if I can't even get 5 mins away, bout to check all bolts on intake, exhaust manifolds and bell housing, oh and checked precats which still seems to be intact , but it's been a hellacious month , especially considering it ran like a top a month ago, but all of a sudden even getting gas has become a will I get it to start, can I get to my next location without stalling, situation , I'm at a loss now

That sounds like a major bummer and terribly frustrating. This hasn’t happened to me fortunately, but I’ve head of guys replacing the the TPS and still having issues- only to find out after replacing other parts that the new TPS was actually faulty from the start. When we started troubleshooting shooting our stuff- we borrowed stuff off a buddy’s jeep that we knew worked to check if it was the issue on our jeep

@sandbox_adventures Жыл бұрын
Could be a few different things u fortunately. We had similar issues and started with checking the throttle body and TPS and then moved on to replacing the crankshaft position sensor which solved our problem. If that didn’t work, our next option would have been the cam shaft position sensor. Hope that helps. Good luck!

I have the same jeep. Same color and everything. My dad left it for me when he passed away. He replaced alot of stuff in it. I've replaced alot of stuff in it. It's always something new but I don't mind. I just did some rust repair on it and painted the rockers. She looks nice. Get along of complements. Wasn't sure about that gold color a d matching gold wheels when he first bought it but it's really grown on me and I've put some nice bfgs all terrains on, painted rockers and fender flares and black trim. Dad would be so excited to see now. Replaced alot of things mechanical. Most on my own. That's the cool part of these xjs. They're almost easy to work on lol. Took me five minutes to put new head lights in. My 96 f150 took me like 7 hours lol. Love the simplicity and nimbleness of the xj. Plus I get a stupid amount of compliments on it it's ridiculous. I'm really getting to be a huge fan of the xj. I see exactly why dad owned 4 of them. They're the greatest suv ever imo
