Great explainer. Thank you! Do you have anything about high idle? I changed the IAC, checked vacuum lines and still nothing.
@DEInTheGarage
@DEInTheGarage 7 жыл бұрын
Did you try cleaning the throttle body? Sometimes the build up on the throttle body or inside the IAC housing will cause a high idle situation. When you checked the vacuum lines, how did you do it? Leaks can be hard to detect and even a small leak (a stretched elbow fitting or hairline crack) can cause a high idle. 4.0's are notorious for vacuum issues. Outside of the easy stuff, check that the wiring on your IAC is all intact. I have heard of cracks in intake manifolds causing idle issues as well. Long story short, high idle can be any number of things, best way to solve it is to spend some time under the hood with a fine toothed comb. Good luck! Hope this helps!

@@seanwaldo9229 I have a 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo. I just had the radiator replaced & the first day I had it back it would stall out when I came to a stop. I took it back to garage & it says reset adaptive memory. Could that have fixed it? Now it is stalling out almost immediately. Do you think what you did would help? Thanks!!

BRO I'm literally taking my glove off to get to your comment box. Man oh man, you got me through not one but two things I've had holding me up for a whole day in getting my throttle body and IAC sensor off. Dadgum cable #2 was seated in a weird way, so glad I found your video so I didn't break it. Then my IAC was stuck on there bad, I unbolted from the unit but it was still stuck. When you said it should pop off, I got a flathead and sure enough, out it came. I owe you man! 🍺 I have a gorgeous '06 JGCL Ltd. Getting worked done that it's needed for awhile and being able to do it right on my own is just the best feeling ever.

Man, you are a great teacher. You explained everything clearly and the best part is you gave warning to common missteps that dumb shade tree mechanics like me always make. A lot of videos skip supposedly easy steps but when I'm doing repairs on my XJ there is a lot of new territory and I don't even know the basics yet. Your explanations of what the MAP, IAC and TPS do was the best I've seen. I plan on cleaning my throttle body this week or next. Thanks for posting this.

I have a 1994 Jeep Grand Cherokee with a 5.2 L V8 and am replacing my IAC soon (engine randomly stalls). I appreciate your explanation of all of the sensors connected to the throttle housing and what they do and what symptom problems each one may exhibit when they start to fail. I will be pulling my throttle housing off of my engine to do a thorough cleaning as you had suggested to get all of the carbon deposits off of the throttle housing for a better running engine. P.S. I also suggest having one of those long retractors tools handy when working on this area as I initially dropped a cleaning pad down into the throttle housing body and had to walk to the auto supply store to get one to retrieve that cleaning pad. Live and learn.

Thanks for not pretending to know-it-all. You already know A LOT! Does not having the wire through the accordian hose mean that I don't have a Mass Air Flow Sensor on my 1999 Grand Cherokee 4.0L? I have been getting intermitant engine cut out while driving down the road. Some folks attribute that to the MAFS. I bought it with 60K miles on it and put another 145K on it. The rear driver window started opening whenever it felt like it. I installed a salvaged Body Control Module and it still does it. My next guess is the window control inside that door. Any other suggestions? I am glad you like making these videos. Please continue!

The 2002 4L WJ(wife jeep) 150k miles idled very rough was hard to start. I replaced plugs, fuel filter, & coil pack still had same issues. Next day replaced crankcase vent hoses, and the manifold vacuum hoses. All old hoses were cracked. Fixed rough idle and stalling but still hard to start, runs good once started. Found out the new Auto Zone fuel filter didn't have a regulator. Replaced with Advanced Auto filter. Used anti seize on the 4 throttle body bolts. I always use Anti-seize. Runs good.

You had a great explanation on this. Have you ever disconnected the sensor separately to diagnose? my 96 Cherokee classic will only run 10 -15 minutes primarily in hotter weather and just dies at all rpm (idle or going hwy). No noticeable trans issues at all. TPS only removed has high idle then dies. all 3 removed high idle then dies. MAP only idles good but did not have the time tonight to let run more then 10 minutes. All sensors look original with a 200k miles but not sure. Dont have the money to replace all, since i have already did a toon-up with fuel filter, new gas, spark&wires, battery & air filter. it does have a cracked manifold pipe but has had it for the last year and just started the dyeing with this new season? any suggestions?

Hmm... I assume you dont have any Check engine lights? You can try disconnecting these sensors one at a time to see if there is any chance./ When they are disconnected the ECU (obviously) cannot read them a reverts to a standard setting. if you disconnect on and your long crank goes away, that sensor needs to be changed. FYI, disconnecting these WILL throw check engine codes, but they can be cleared ant they will not come back. feel free to email me if you want to chat more about this issue dandeoffroad@gmail.com

Perfect explanation of the air intake. Im currently dealing with a strange problem on a 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee Loredo. I replaced the crankshaft position sensor in the fall, in the hopes it would solve a strange "shuddering" and stalling, particularly after the car was run for a while and THEN restarted. Like when you go to the store and come out. So I replaced the tps and the cam shaft position sensor. I'm wondering if while putting in the tps, I created a vacuum leak at one of the rubber boots. That, or when I attached one of these sensors I didn't align it properly...also the evap purge solenoid is clicking like a metronome (normal?). I have yet to do another throttle body cleaning (although I did it 6 months ago), or install a new idle air control valve, but I have a new one and am going to attempt install and hope all of it works.
@ryanellis5902
@ryanellis5902 2 жыл бұрын
@DangusMcShwangus Did you figure anything out about the purge solenoid clicking..? Mine does the same thing occasionally.. I recently cleaned the throttle body and replaced IAC/TPS bur didn't touch the MAP. (The solenoid has done the clicking both before and after serving the TB.) I don't get any stalling or high idling, but It does seem like the engine "stumbles" a bit during idle. I also just changed out my spark plugs, wires and cap/rotor on distributor. Thanks in advance for any info!

Observation. Just remove the air filter cover for more room. 4 clamps :( also, when removing the throttle body cables, make sure you show exactly how to remove them. I thought i could just "pop" off the cruise control cable. Well, I broke the the plastic piece. Try replacing that :( I had to get one made with a 3d printer. Instead, you need to 'slide' it off the cable. I ended up super gluing it back together but it was definitely a problem that could have be avoided. Anyway, just trying to give some advice to someone who may have this problem. Cheers

Great video. I have a 2000 Wrangler that idles kinda rough and when you put it in drive or reverse with the break on it is rough as well, almost seems like its pushing too hard against the brake. Put in neutral and it smooths out or when you drive it seems ok. I bought an IAC and TPS for it. Taking the throttle body off definitely seems like the easiest way to replace the sensors.

@@khross73 I would definitely confirm that everything on my throttle body was clean. IAC and TPS should not effect mixture, but the MAP sensor could if it was faulty or the rubber hose which connects it to the TB was ripped or missing. Usually a rich/lean situation end up being tied to an O2 sensor. I would definitely check the rubber hose on the MAP as there is no code specifically for the MAP, it just makes the engine throw other codes like running rich

Nice job. MAP = Manifold AIR Pressure. My 2010 Jeep Wrangler sometimes kicks up to 4,000 RPM when the speed reaches 55-60 MPH. And then it stays at that rev position for what feels like "weeks" (maybe 10-15 min), even if I slow down to 49. Changed the Throttle Body (since it has the TPS and other hardware integrated into one part) since the old one was in bad shape. This did not fix the surge acceleration problem. Any ideas as to why? Still troubleshooting this. Some mechanics also mentioned that it might be the Accelerator pedal (with its electronics) sending bad info to the throttle body. Have you run across this type of problem before? Anyone else have similar problems? Keep making videos. That helps a whole bunch of people.

It certainly sounds like your IAC or TPS could be messing with you. Could also be a fuel delivery issue or even a spark plug issue. Do you have the ability to find a junk yard to pull some new sensors to test the theory? If you find the right yard, they should be $5 each

Hmm... without much to go on all I can do is suggest a few thing... Make sure your spark plugs arte good and within spec. Make sure all your TB sensors (from this video) are good and clean. Check that the Jeep has proper fuel pressure (if you take it to a shop they will do this for you for a few bucks). Without any codes, it is most likely one of those main issues... something is preventing it from getting spark, fuel, or proper air..
