Great explainer. Thank you! Do you have anything about high idle? I changed the IAC, checked vacuum lines and still nothing.
@DEInTheGarage7 жыл бұрын
Did you try cleaning the throttle body? Sometimes the build up on the throttle body or inside the IAC housing will cause a high idle situation. When you checked the vacuum lines, how did you do it? Leaks can be hard to detect and even a small leak (a stretched elbow fitting or hairline crack) can cause a high idle. 4.0's are notorious for vacuum issues. Outside of the easy stuff, check that the wiring on your IAC is all intact. I have heard of cracks in intake manifolds causing idle issues as well. Long story short, high idle can be any number of things, best way to solve it is to spend some time under the hood with a fine toothed comb. Good luck! Hope this helps!

You had a great explanation on this. Have you ever disconnected the sensor separately to diagnose? my 96 Cherokee classic will only run 10 -15 minutes primarily in hotter weather and just dies at all rpm (idle or going hwy). No noticeable trans issues at all. TPS only removed has high idle then dies. all 3 removed high idle then dies. MAP only idles good but did not have the time tonight to let run more then 10 minutes. All sensors look original with a 200k miles but not sure. Dont have the money to replace all, since i have already did a toon-up with fuel filter, new gas, spark&wires, battery & air filter. it does have a cracked manifold pipe but has had it for the last year and just started the dyeing with this new season? any suggestions?

Thanks for not pretending to know-it-all. You already know A LOT! Does not having the wire through the accordian hose mean that I don't have a Mass Air Flow Sensor on my 1999 Grand Cherokee 4.0L? Observation. Just remove the air filter cover for more room. 4 clamps :( also, when removing the throttle body cables, make sure you show exactly how to remove them. I thought i could just "pop" off the cruise control cable. Well, I broke the the plastic piece. Try replacing that :( I had to get one made with a 3d printer. Instead, you need to 'slide' it off the cable. I ended up super gluing it back together but it was definitely a problem that could have be avoided. You can try disconnecting these sensors one at a time to see if there is any chance./ When they are disconnected the ECU (obviously) cannot read them a reverts to a standard setting. if you disconnect on and your long crank goes away, that sensor needs to be changed. Perfect explanation of the air intake. Im currently dealing with a strange problem on a 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee Loredo. I replaced the crankshaft position sensor in the fall, in the hopes it would solve a strange "shuddering" and stalling, particularly after the car was run for a while and THEN restarted. Like when you go to the store and come out. So I replaced the tps and the cam shaft position sensor. I'm wondering if while putting in the tps, I created a vacuum leak at one of the rubber boots. That, or when I attached one of these sensors I didn't align it properly...also the evap purge solenoid is clicking like a metronome (normal?). I have yet to do another throttle body cleaning (although I did it 6 months ago), or install a new idle air control valve, but I have a new one and am going to attempt install and hope all of it works.

@DangusMcShwangus Did you figure anything out about the purge solenoid clicking..? Mine does the same thing occasionally.. I recently cleaned the throttle body and replaced IAC/TPS bur didn't touch the MAP. (The solenoid has done the clicking both before and after serving the TB.) I don't get any stalling or high idling, but It does seem like the engine "stumbles" a bit during idle. I also just changed out my spark plugs, wires and cap/rotor on distributor. Thanks in advance for any info!

@@DEInTheGarage I went and had the codes read again and its showing P0172(running rich). The guy I bought the jeep from replaced the IAC and TPS before I bought it. I'm googling but if you have an suggestions from past experiences I'd love to hear them. Thanks!

@@khross73 I would definitely confirm that everything on my throttle body was clean. IAC and TPS should not effect mixture, but the MAP sensor could if it was faulty or the rubber hose which connects it to the TB was ripped or missing. Usually a rich/lean situation end up being tied to an O2 sensor. I would definitely check the rubber hose on the MAP as there is no code specifically for the MAP, it just makes the engine throw other codes like running rich

@@DEInTheGarage Well, changed all 3 sensors, cleaned the throttle body, and checked the map sensor hose. I've seen no change in behaviour. Back to the drawing board :(

Thank you very much. Your video helped me to clean the throttle body of my 4.0 Grand Cherokee 2000 and exchange the IOC-Sensor: idle speed is great again. I noted that the screws attaching the position sensor are stucked, I dont want to break anything there. Any ideas on how to get them loose?

Hmm.. in my experience that is only going to happen when there is an obstruction in the exhaust. Is the Jeep running normal otherwise?

Yes .noticed it when I was working on it late so I replaced fuel injectors wrapped with heat shield.

I have the shifting problem that you mentioned with the TPS sensor mainly happens when going up hills and sometimes from a dead stop, a friend told me he had the same shifting problems, he replaced the TPS and he was fine, so I replaced the TPS in my jeep and I still have the same problem, what do you think might else be wrong? @@DEInTheGarage Yeah that's the first thing I checked when the symptoms started, fluid still looks brand new and it's at the full line, Jeep only has 115xxx on it, after watching this video, and I drove the Jeep today it does bog down some when I'm stopping like it's about to stall, could the IAC with the TPS have something to do with it? I haven't pulled the IAC to check it yet.

My guess would be the CPS (crankshaft position sensor). I had the same issue... Does it start right back up or do you need to wait a little while? Could also be vapor locking of the fuel rail...

I’m experiencing similar problems...will a bad tps cause a backfire under load?
@DEInTheGarage4 жыл бұрын
It shouldnt... that COULD be bad crank position or cam position sensor. any check engine lights?
@johnbryant47424 жыл бұрын
@@DEInTheGarage no check engine lights, no codes, no nothing. What got me during your video is when you said that the tps could cause what feels like a trans concern. This is what I’m feeling but not in the way you explain...instead of surging it boggs down in that dead range you talked about. It gets caught in the dead range and I can’t step on the gas to make it go. It never dies but it does sputter and chug like it’s not getting fuel. At first I thought it was a bad coil. Removed it and cleaned it up and it looked good. So I changed the plugs and fuel filter for good measure. Still experiencing the problem. I thought maybe the fuel pump or sender is weak but checked it and it’s good. Then I ran across your video. Turns out that it was the tps. R&r old sensor and BOOM it’s working. It took a day or two for the computer to relearn the new sensor but now she up and running like she was before. Thanks bro. You can tell that you work on your own vehicle and not just out to make a video and put it on KZbin. I like learning from guys like you. You explain things very well. Thanks buddy.

I'll occasionally start up my Jeep and it will start up fine but will just die unless I keep my foot on the pedal. The second I let my foot off the gas, it just dies. To restart, I'll have to give it some gas to start and again, keep foot on the pedal a bit. Most of the time it'll be fine after a few moments and I can take my foot off and it'll be fine. This happens maybe a few times a year so not often. I replaced the IAC, still happened afterwards. Looking online, some places are mentioning the TPS. Does that sound probable to you?

@DEInTheGarage6 жыл бұрын
It certainly sounds like your IAC or TPS could be messing with you. Could also be a fuel delivery issue or even a spark plug issue. Do you have the ability to find a junk yard to pull some new sensors to test the theory? If you find the right yard, they should be $5 each
