AC was a dealer installed option on all YJs. Just like soft tops were on CJs... It was also a very expensive option at the time. That is why everything on the inside looks like it was just bolted on... it's because it was.

I have that carpet you’re referring to. It’s a stock option in the Laredo’s. It goes all the way up over the hook bracket for the door. The same bolts that hold that bracket hold the carpet in place neatly.

When the top lever is in the VENT position, it opens the airbox on the passenger side, which permits air to flow into the cab. That is a vent. The YJ, if equipped with full metal doors also has wing vents, which work well.

Hello, to help stop the heat coming through the floor, I bought a few cork dinner mats and put them under the carpet in the cab. It helped a lot which is good as I live in the Middle East and our summers get up to 55c, so it's a little toasty.

First thing I did when I got my yj was to take all the carpets out... and pulled the drain plugs.... Since jeeps are noted for leaking I prevent the floor from rusting out... while looking for a jeep they all looked good till I removed the carpets from the front.

One thing with your 4 wheel drive like stay and on check your vacuum actuator to make sure it's actually disengaging those vacuum actuators are known for going bad If that's not it the switch that's coming out of that piece probably went mad in is sticking Compressed
@MrJoshcc6004 жыл бұрын
I second this. My indicator would flash between 4wd and 2wd. Found out after about a year the vaccuum actuator completely rusted through and it was in fact switching on and off a little but couldn't tell when stopped.
@patchrockit Жыл бұрын
I'm not reading the comments to see if someone else said it, but if you remove the center dash cover ( 6 screws ), then remove the 4 screws holding the air control unit and SLOWLY AND CAREFULLY slide it out (the cams, cable holders, cable end holders and other rotational bits can be brittle by this age), you'll see where the cables mount. Follow the cables back and you will find an adjuster. Turn it to elongate the outer cable sheath and shorten the cables a little, then try the slider. You'll notice you don't need to force the slider left or right as hard to open/close the vent or turn the whole system on/off.
@bsgtrekfan88 Жыл бұрын
Unfortunately, explaining what to do in the video is kind of odd, but I know you know what I meant when I said, force the slider all the way over even if you slide it over do you need to kind of feel for the lever/cabling behind the dash to actually move the vent open but yes, you are correct. It’s just one of those little things that unless you’re there in person sometimes people will never get it. I meant wrangler owners who have been moving that lever all their lives only to find out that it did nothing because they weren’t pushing it that extra quarter of an inch at the end lol.
@patchrockit7 ай бұрын
Funny enough, i'm back watching this video again. I'm deleting the whole control box and radio, removing the center trim, overlaying a new shallower trim, cutting out area for double-din, and installing a touchscreen under the gauge set. With the room i have left on the left sude of the screen, i'll have a hi/off/lo switch with 3 push/pull cables attached to temp/vent/floor&windshield flaps. Gonna be interesting, but i can always put it stock again.

I had an 87 Wrangler Laredo package, mine had an additional gauge, I believe it was a clock where your 4wd indicator is. My indicator was in the center of the dash with the turn signals and all. Anyway quick question, my Jeep had the same AC but it never worked. Can you tell me how well the AC worked when it was functioning? I am considering another YJ or maybe a TJ but AC is a must have option.

Great and helpful video. Quick Question: As I slide my selector from "Off" to "Defrost" the fan blower comes on, and stays on as I slide further to the right to "Heat". When I continue to the right to "Vent", the physical vent opens in the passenger floorboard like you showed....but the blower/fan turns off. (It comes right back on when I slide it back to "heat".) Is this how it's supposed to work??
@jshmoodtube2 жыл бұрын
I have the same issue. We’re you able to find a fix?

Yes, that’s exactly how it’s supposed to work. Air is forced through the vent while you are moving, once you stop, the airflow stops.

I have a YJ 93 with plenty of these add ons. Previous and most likely original owners sure seem to have been very invested in their jeep. My AC stopped working last week. I took it to a pal and he says there isn’t a problem with AC but rather an electrical problem in the dash. He thinks that behind the rotating knobs they’re might be a wiring problem because it won’t transmit the electrical current to the AC compressor. Rather there is no spinning at the compressor. It’s not being powered. I’m actually thinking about personally unscrewing the panel where the two knobs are but I could also wait and take it tomorrow morning to the vehicle electrician. Question: I typically would turn off the AC fan knob to off and rotate the cooler knob to off as well. All this before turning off the jeep. But here in Texas it was hot at times I didn’t bother to. Is that okay or recommended??? This AC obviously is 30years old by now (Maybe some parts have been replaced over the years) but yeah overall, I fear that was the issue as to why it’s not working now. I remember turning the jeep on and hearing the AC kick in, blowing air into the cabin but suddenly stop after like 10 seconds. Now the knobs and the lever switch aren’t getting the AC vents to work. Only the defrost+top vents will work.

Those should be 4x6 speakers in the dash. Also, what are those home speakers? Did you check the ohms on them before hooking them to your amp or deck? Just a heads up. Not all speakers are created equally. Especially home and car. Most car audio is 4 ohm. Those could be anywhere from 2 to 16 ohms.

I have a 92 with AC and it quit blowing cold air at the end of last summer. I knew based on a quick diagnostic that I'd need a new compressor clutch, which now they only sale the compressor and clutch together now. I didnt replace due to weather cooling off here in Charleston, but now its heating back up and i need AC. But, now the AC isnt even turning on. Do you happen to know where the fuse would be for the AC unit or is it common for the entire unit to quit working?

Great video, bsgtrekfan88! I've got a '93 YJ and you're right -- it took me few weeks to figure out where the heck the air was coming from when I opened the vent.
