JEEP ZJ RKE FOB MISSION - HOW TO PROGRAM YOUR 1993-1998 GRAND CHEROKEE KEYS

Just acquired my third 'new' ZJ [a '96 213,000 miles], which came with both original RKE fobs... neither working [even with fresh batteries]. Before biting the bullet and acquiring/reprogramming replacement fobs, I took a shot in the dark and [very carefully and ever so slightly] bent upward the four battery contact tabs on the circuit board and two contact tabs that protrude from along side the batteries. Bingo! Both RKE fobs working perfectly now. Interestingly, these fobs have two batteries, and trial-and-error [and a wee bit of deduction] suggests that one battery powers the lock switch and one battery powers the unlock switch. So, after performing a slight tab bend, if you get only 'lock' or 'unlock' to operate, but not the other, try slightly increasing the bend just a bit and see if you get both to function. Good luck!

Yea, when I finally bought fobs for my 97, I had to go to the dealership about a year ago. They only charged me $15 so it wasn't bad.Since they're aftermarket fobs they don't flash the lights horn beeps though.👍🏻👍🏻

1997 XJ had the plastic dome without the IR lens if you didn’t have the full overhead console and then in 98 it was moved to the interior light where it stayed until the end of the XJ. The 97 version of keyless board didn’t have horn beep capability but the later revision did and was a direct swap if you wanted the newer board.

You can also call around to local independent shops because some might have a drb3. The independent shop I work at has all the factory scan tools for the big 3 American companies.

Haha, that white zj looks identical to the one my grandpa has currently. But man, really like that 93, nothing like those 93 to 95's. My grandpa also had one of them, ( he's had a lot of jeeps over the years ) it was a red 1995 Grand Cherokee Laredo, and I always liked it. He sold it like 7 or 8 years ago, I know a few years ago he talked to the guy that he sold it to and he's very happy with it. He said it's one of the best cars he has ever owned, so I'm glad it went to someone who enjoys it. If your neighbor ever sells that '93 you should get it and fix it up, even if your wife does kill you 😂😂. But good video on those key fobs, never knew you had to take them to the dealership, or that the radio waves were owned by the government lol.

I was able to use my launch X431 padv scan tool to program remotes On 97 jeep grand Cherokee they use RKE through vehicle theft module Not all scan tools can do it FYI

Man I don’t know if you’re still having trouble with your Check Gas Cap light on your Commander but there’s an ESIM under the Jeep near the gas tank that’s more than likely the problem. I’ve replaced several of them and they are fairly inexpensive so tell your mechanic to look into that.

I have a 98 xj with that module in the overhead light. took key fobs to the dealership to be programed. didn't work. they didn't know why but did see that apparently the prior owner replaced the passenger door lock/window module with a zj one. what should i do?

this works on 96 and up 93 to 95 used light not radio waves so no transmitter newer than 1996 will work on a 93 to 95. just went through this to get one for my 95

In regards to the horn feature on the wj, you should also be able to turn it on/off from the overhead. I didn't know that about the key fob though 👍

97-01 XJ key fobs must be programmed by the dealer using their DRBIII programmer... Or, you can get the fobs and the motherboard from my buddy mark on Ebay. The fobs must be programmed to match the motherboard, if you have working fobs maybe he cab program yours. Here's his link to his ebay email. [e-mail]

Had that same issue when I had my 98 ZJ back in the day, Jeep dealer was the only one with the DRB ended up just going aftermarket and added auto start. My XJ recently the fob stopped working so I ordered a used set with the module from ebay, what's weird is the module looked a little different than my original, the range is much less I mean like I need to be standing next to the car, the original one has like a short (like 3" long) metal wire soldered on to the circuit board almost like an antenna, I use to be able to unlock the car from across the street, oh well Jeep my life.

Try amazon and see if you can find anyone selling 93-95 Fobs. Thats what my Neighbor did, she got an aftermarket pair for like 20 bucks and programmed it herself

Take your ignition key to the rear hatch and turn clockwise it also can work on the other doors but you just have to check them all
