His total command of the instrument, from his grip on the tremelo bar, volume and tone controls and being able to manipulate all three, to his pick work and plucking combinations, not to mention his forward and back positions between the frets, and his incredible sense of dramatic effect is just an amazing package. He was inimitable. He took the electric guitar farther than any other musician ever. Plus he surrounded himself with amazing musicians and appreciated them all. Tal Wickenfeld may be one of the best bassists I've ever heard.

@@brianreid3267 What "hard living" did Jeff do? I think he stayed out of the drug scene altogether, he was a vegetarian (whether good or not, it indicates a certain level of self-concern), and I don't think he participated in the kinds of shenanigans that the members of Zeppelin did when they were storming across the US in the 1970s. Jimmy was very gracious and clearly ecstatic that Jeff was receiving this honor. Must have amazed them both, remembering their early times as boys. And Jimmy's comments to the question about bands trying to succeed today - really, it's a whole other world. When Jeff and Jimmy came up, rock was the big new deal and they were at the forefront of a genre (rock!) that had a massive international audience. Now rock is a niche, much diminished in sales a concert draws, and fading as is the oldest of the Boomers. It's difficult to see a rock band achieving such widespread success today. Sadly.

I like how Beck pays tribute to Scotty Moore in the front row. And calls to Page " jimmy, you'll back me up on this ". Imagine them two as teenagers listening to Elvis records trying to figure out Scotty's riffs.

2009? It took them that long to realize how good a guitarist Beck is? They seem to have lost credibility by letting their political views influence who gets in.
@joeysplats3209
@joeysplats3209 Жыл бұрын
Very political. Regardless what anyone thinks of him, Ted Nugent has influenced generations of guitar players, having started at the ripe old age of 10. Nugent was a maniac on stage in his early years, with a physical presence that always brought the audience a great show. Stranglehold is a timeless classic and a staple among guitar students. Why isn't The Motor City Madman in the RRHOF? Politics.

@@joeysplats3209 What about Grand Funk? Not from the Motor City but made it big there. When the RRHF let in Rap and ABBA it lost any credibility. I agree Ted should be in there. I loved the Amboy Dukes days :-)

TRUTH be told, his music never gets old. What a rhythm section, Vinnie & Tal...she's barely a teenager, here, sharing the stage with MONSTERS. Those horns on Peter Gunn‼️

Tal's the grand old age of 23 here. She did ok for a girl from Bondi in Sydney I guess. Goes over to the States at the age of 18 and pretty much has an instant career! Had never even been in a band!... No slugging it out for years in dingy dives... no obstacles whatsoever? Gets invited straight up on stage with the Allman Brothers as a "complete unknown!" And from there...straight to the top of the pile! Incredible back story I'm sure.... Would make a great movie! But would it be an "honest" movie?

Let's get a few of the guys together out in the garage and see what happens ... Jeff had it figured out -- stubborn talent, enough fame to be fun but not so much as to make life a public spectacle, a beautiful wife (talented in her own right as a painter), a barn full of cool American hot rods to play with, plenty of respect from his peers, and the good sense to do things his own way and pass on while still at the top of his game. Congrats, Jeff, but we sure miss you. Something tells me we're going to lose a lot more of our favorite musicians this year.

I also saw them on that tour. They would flip a coin to see who would open that nights show, and in Denver, Stevie opened, then Jeff came on, then we were blessed to watch both of these guitar gods 'battle' on stage. It was a tremendous evening for 20,000+ fans at McNichols Arena, absolutely beautiful.

I am first and foremost a Page fan coming to Beck after the fact. Page is right about Jeff being unorthodox. I can't really think of anyone who plays in his style, and he's not the flashiest player, not a shredder, but he's always been one of my favorites, a great guitarist who serves the song, allowing and enabling others in the band to lend their skill and craft to the song. One of the all-time great who's always been in my top five greatest of all time axe men.
