I remember taking my dad to see "The Big Lebowski." He didn't really want to go. All the folks at the senior center had told him it was awful, with lot's of swearing. I never heard him laugh so loud, laugh all the way through. For my old man, the dude abides.

I didn’t realize, never even been nominated?! Two of the best actors ever. Anytime I see that either one is in a film, I know it will be worth a look because those guys (and Bridges) are always interesting to watch and elevate whatever they are in.

@@herr5262 Which reinforces one of the rules of nature that I think explains so much about political science and culture: most people are stupid! But I was also talking about just those 2 actors in general. Buscemi and Goodman are two of my favorite actors ever. If I see their name on a film (with the exception of extended toy commercials masquerading as movies, i.e., Transformers) I always give it a look because they can make anything interesting. They are also great actors because unlike a lot of actors, they can play all sorts of different characters. BTW, you probably know this but Big Lebowski is (among other things) an adaptation of scenes and characters from Raymond Chandler's novels like The Big Sleep with The Dude as Philip Marlow.

Me and a buddy happened to both be off of work due to a winter storm. We decided to go see TBL. Walking in, we thought it was a bowling movie. Walking out, we had no idea what it was that we had seen, but we knew it was something. Over the years we must have re-watched it 40 times and we never ceased quoting lines from the film. Everyone's talking about how great the actors have been in that movie, and they were, but what buffled me the most is how to you come up with that idea, writing such a script, I mean how is that possible? It must be absolute genius and madness at the same time, kudos to Ethan and Joel, and whoever was involved writing this. Writers don't get enough credit anyways.

It's so crazy too because it's like...the whole time, like nobody is on the same page in that movie. Even from the very first scene, the narrator can't even finish his thoughts because he's losing track of what he's saying multiple times. The movie somehow makes zero sense and perfect sense at the same time. Like you said, it's really a testament to how great the writers did.

The most enjoyable element is when you have a friend that quotes it with you and you'll be rolling on the floor laughing. I'm gonna go do a rewatch now. The rewatch abides

YewTewbe A nihilist is someone who “doesn’t believe in anything”. When the dude says “must be exhausting”, he is saying it sarcastically. The nihilist in the movie is passed out in the pool next to a bottle of alcohol. The dude is making a joke at how easy a nihilist’s life must be.

John Goodman was just hilarious the whole way through and it seemed like no one was noticing him dropping one-liners.

Yeah, he was diminished in this by the other guys. They didn't let him be him very much.

Okay.. Buscemi said he wonders how the Dude and Walter even became friends. Well, here's my theory: I think all three of them signed up for bowling, looking for something social to do as it's clear that all 3 of them were fairly lonely. Some joker in the league office saw their names on the applications: "Sobchack", "Lebowski", "Kerabotsos" .. and just assumed they were older guys with immigrant backgrounds, and believed they'd have a lot in common--- so this joker stuck them all on a team together... from there, they just became friends, despite the fact that the three of them literally have NOTHING in common.

HarveyMidnight that’s the genius of this movie. You could literally tear apart every character and run wild with theories. I love your theory by the way!!! I’m not saying it’s the best movie ever made but it’s my favorite movie of all time. Im proud to be amongst fans!

I was grinning ear to ear watching this entire thing. I think my favorite part was the fact Steve said he never really gave much thought about watching it after, and years later encounters people who’ve watched it 10s/100s of times lmao

The Big Lebowski was a very subtle movie. It is a classic film noir cleverly dressed up with a ton of fun elements.

Agreed. I didn’t get it the first time I watched it, second time I watched it, I fell in love. It’s been my favorite movie of all time since freshmen year of high school (1999).
