I was in Memphis in 2008 and saw the spot where he drowned. It's just this small tributary downtown adjacent to the Mississippi River and looks so innocuous. I guess a tugboat's wake pulled him under. Grace is a stunner of an album

Back in the 90’s, Jimmy Page and Robert Plant saw Buckley live and they were completely stunned and inspired by his unique talent. (I hear a LITTLE bit of Robert Plant in him as well). PLEASE DON’T FORGET TO RETURN TO JEFF’S FATHER TIM BUCKLEY AS WELL JUSTIN! Thanks for the always thought provoking reaction!

I get the comparisons. Make sense to me. This song for decent airplay in the mid-90's. Was my first introduction to JB but was already familiar with his dad's music.

Grace is one of my most treasured albums. Jeff Buckley had an outstanding voice that still sends shivers down my spine whenever I hear it. And he was such a gifted songwriter too. I can't wait till you get to 'So Real' and 'Lover, You Should've Come Over' as those are my favorite tracks.

Even given my age, I am just recently coming to Jeff Buckley, as a direct result of reaction vids! I really liked this song a lot, and I agreed with your comparisons - yes, even the Brian Ferry bit! His voice is just astounding, and has that quality, that - "pantie-drop"! I resemble that remark! ;)

I had this album downloaded to my PC in 2009, but never really gave it a chance until the last track on the album (Dream Brother) played randomly on a playlist. That opened a can of worms for me. Y’all need to check out his live material. He was one hell of a live performer with acclaim from artists like Jimmy Page, Adele, Muse, etc. I think he was a better guitarist than singer, but he did both well. For this still interested, check out Live at Glastonbury or Live at the Bataclan

I just got into Jeff Buckley in December, but I absolutely love his music! I didn't even realize that you reacted to him mid-2020 (I started watching you Dec. 2019, but I don't think I even knew who Jeff Buckley was at that time), but I'm glad you're continuing on. 'Grace' is now one of my favorite albums of all time with 'Dream Brother' being my favorite off of it. There was a posthumous album released after he died called "Sketches for My Sweetheart the Drunk" where the first disc was studio recordings of songs he was working on and the second disc was demos and alternate mixes, and I was surprised to find out that he did a demo cover (poor quality) of 'Back in NYC' by Genesis. Since I'm a Genesis fan and I know you are too, I thought that was pretty cool. I liked hearing your thoughts: )

One of the things I didn't pick up on until much later in my appreciation of Jeff Buckley was how the composition of the music sweeps and swings like his voice. It's a little unconventional at times but it works so well. The short and punchy notes play against his "crooning" style so well.
@lastunctives20952 жыл бұрын
Played it to death one of the greats of the 90s . One of the very greatest vocals ever - kills 😭

Brian Ferry was a very emotive singer, not a stretch at all. Jeff Buckley takes emotive singing to a whole other level. As for as the vocal acrobatics, in live performances he takes that to another level beyond Kate Bush.

Just recently became aware of Jeff Buckley and I really like 'Grace' and especially 'Hallelujah.' Interesting beginning of this song with the slide guitar. If you like slide guitar you should check out Leo Kottke's '6 & 12 String Guitar.' The whole album is simply amazing.

Talking about singing Buckley in the car, just wait till you get to 'So Real'. Defintely one of the lesser tracks on the album (IMHO) but wow! is it ever fun to sing at the top of your voice!

Your comparisons are true. These are expressive artists, all. I like Roxy and Kate and as for Jeff Buckley, I only know a handful of songs, including this one, which I reacted to the same as you on first listen. He's got it going on. This has a Zep vibe because he loved the band. He also liked Genesis and there's a cover of "Back In N.Y.C." on his album, "Sketches for My Sweetheart the Drunk".

What a talent. Incredible vocalist and songwriter. Left us far, far too soon. Thanks for revisiting this classic album on the channel. And yes - I know what you mean about playing an album you love over and over again after you first discover it! I think Ferry is too arch and mannered in his vocals, Buckley has far greater range and soul. Purpose and meaning, yes, so I'll give you the Kate Bush analogy, not so much the Roxy one!

If you do "Lover, You Should Have Come Over"...believe it or not, to me, it's even better than the song "Grace". What a great album overall. Also, it's been quite a while since you reacted to Renaissance. They don't block (I've heard Annie say it on an interview). I would suggest "Things I Don't Understand" or "At The Hatbor", or really anything from the album 'Novella'.

Haha Justin! I often use the term "reminds me of" in the same way you did and sometimes it gets misunderstood so when you said "wait wait" and held out your hands it really made me laugh😁 Interesting analogies🤔 When I say it I literally mean this artist or that artist made another artist or artists come to mind. For instance, I really like Kate Bush but some of her songs remind me of Jon Anderson because they both often uses a high pitch. If Annie Haslam inhaled helium?🙂 Familiar with Tim Buckley but not very familiar with Jeff so worth more looking into👍

Hi JP. Dave from a brightening up London (you Chase The Clouds Away!). This album was a beacon of light in the musical wasteland that was the 90s (controversial, huh?). Almost a Led Zep feel to this track, and there was so much variety on Grace: from grunge to easy listening to classical. I get your vocal comparisons, but for sheer richness and theatricality, I would go for Rufus Wainwright and Chris Cornell, both of whom sang tributes to Jeff after his tragic demise. P.S. my song ref is by The Rembrandts.

Jeff is constantly and rightfully praised for his voice, but i feel his lyricism is top tier and very underrated. On his Grace album alone i felt he had at least 3 lyrical masterpieces (Mojo Pin, Last Goodbye, and Lover, You Shouldve Come Over, arguably his greatest song). Hearing his words read out loud illuminates how sick he was with the pen. Awesome reaction and breakdown. 👍🏼
@jfergs.33022 жыл бұрын
Interesting one this. I usually wince when I hear 'singer, songwriter', but this wasn't bad. Funnily, I read the name, knew of him, his history, early demise, famous dad, one album out (in his lifetime) etc Then realised I'd never heard anything by him... Good tune, really liked the rhythm track, bass in partic. And also the string breaks with (maybe just me), a hint of a bhangra lilt in there. I'll definitely have to hear the rest of the album.
@Richard_Jones2 жыл бұрын
I think you're bang on with the bhangra reference. Defintely a stroke of Bollywood genius to add those strings. They give it a sweet weirdness that is perfect.

When this video started and you said you're continuing the album, I realized I'd somehow missed your reactions to "Mojo Pin" and "Grace", so I went back to view those first. So glad to see you're all in so quickly. Since "Last Goodbye" might be my least favorite track on Grace, I can't wait for the next installments. Not that "Hallelujah" is necessarily the apex (hard to pick one now), but the few reactions out there have used the "official" video which is a live performance I consider inferior to the one here, so yours is eagerly anticipated! By the way, Jeff himself plays lead guitar, and it's often spectacular (e.g. in "Hallelujah"). You deserve at least ten times the subscribers, JP.

I'm very much a cat person. There were always at least two of them in the house when I was growing up. I now think they are amazing creatures, deserving of care and affection (when they wish to receive it, of course!). As a result of that, I have never been anywhere near someone strangling a cat so I have no idea what such a hideous act would sound like. Until now.
