It's a song written to Buckley's ex, Rebecca Moore. He allegedly called her the night before he drowned. He didn't reach her but it's said he left on her answering machine; "Think of me and smile. I'm gonna work my ass off, baby. I'll see you on the other side."

Thanks that’s a cool story. It was such a tragedy, another talent gone too young!

Jeff was 30 when he died. His dad, Tim Buckley, also a singer-songwriter who died young, was 28 when he passed.

Thanks for the info, I couldn’t remember if he was part of the infamous 27 club or not. Seems not but he wasn’t much older than that!

I think this song is more about him reflecting about his own mistakes than actually expecting for the love to come over, you know? It's one of those cases of only realizing the value of something after you lose it, but I don't think it's meant for us to feel sorry for him, but actually try to learn from his mistakes through the experience he tells in the song.

Thanks, I agree and started to touch upon it when I was saying that he's not talking to her but I don't think I finished that point. We spoke more about this afterwards and about how he'd probably exhibited similar behaviour with others he'd been involved with but this time he lost someone he really cared for. Great song!

Fair review imo! For me it's my favourite Jeff Buckley song, but going from Hallelujah to this is a massive change and that's probably why expectations vs reality may have been so jarring. Also I feel like Hallelujah is a very recognisable and comfortable song to listen to, whereas this song is more "indie", and has an approach not often heard in music. I think a couple more Jeff Buckley songs and you start to get a feel for his style and then it becomes a wonderful experience. It took me a few attempts to get into his music because it is so different however I always had a undercurrent of feeling that it was great music and I needed to give it a chance, and now he's imo the best singer of all time. P.S. I liked the shoutout to Chris Cornell, incredible voice.

I hadn’t really considered that they were quite different stylistically because I think of his work holistically but you’re right! There was a period where I listened to this album a lot so I don’t really hear the differences between the songs anymore. With that in mind what song would you go for next in trying to win Carrie over?

@@MarriedtotheMusic2010 kzbin.info/www/bejne/sHWalmCbhtqbgK8 cover of satisfied mind kzbin.info/www/bejne/gnycdIaIhrqresk Mojo pin live at Glastonbury kzbin.info/www/bejne/pKOwqJqKmJtsr5Y Everybody here wants you kzbin.info/www/bejne/aZfWapuIirmCpLc Dream Brother live in Chicago I'd say either of these 4 are really good. Easiest to listen to is probably everybody here wants you, although my fave performance is the satisfied mind one (don't know why, I just love it). It's difficult to find a song as emotionally gripping as hallelujah, however these songs show Jeff's vocal skill and take you to that otherworldly place - as cliché as that is. May or may not win Carrie over, some music just isn't to people's taste but hopefully she does like it :)

Thanks for these Ryan, We've already had a request for that version of Mojo Pin so maybe that's the one to try. I think that he's well inside Carrie's wheelhouse in terms of what she likes so I'm quietly confident she'll get it eventually. :)

React to Jeff Buckley - Grace (BBC Late Show). Also, please try to refrain from talking too much during pauses. That detracts from your experience of the music, as it creates too large of a gap between sections of a given song, thereby ruining the flow. I would gently encourage you to save most dialogue until the end of a song.

Though your initial reaction to the lyrics seemed to be quite cynical, I found your reaction to this song quite interesting from a woman's perspective. Maybe in a sense, you were the woman in this song. And she was like, well you shouldn't have screwed up, move on and learn next time but in one last plea he starts pouring out his heart at the end of the song and you're like, hang on a second. Maybe he wasn't so bad. That's why I like authentic reactions... thanks guys

It is great to get different perspectives and that’s why we love doing it and also getting feedback from yourself and others. To be honest I’d never really paid that much attention to why he was in his position and focussed mainly on the parallel feelings I could identify with. I guess we all do that with songs to a degree and that’s how we can all take a different meaning from the same song. So thanks for your comment and if you have any angsty 90s break up songs you want us to react to then just drop them in the comments and we’ll add them to our requests list.
