Corning Museum of Glass

7 жыл бұрын

Watch as Jeff Mack and Eric Meek demonstrate for their class, Cane and Cups, which focused on working in the traditional Venetian style. Students learn cane techniques such as mezza-filigranna, reticello, and zanfirico, incorporating various patterns to create multi-part vessels and goblets.

Love the videos from Corning. As a art glass collector they are fascinating, and show the real skill these artists have. How I wish I could own this piece, simply awesome!

As I watch more videos and have more time to watch them work, I have come to realize that glass blowing isn't so much about manipulation of the glass and the beauty of the artwork produced, but about playing with energy. Learning to control the levels of energy in the glass and playing with the effects of different colors and methods of controlling where the heat is in order to control the glass. It's really wonderful to watch. I wish I had the money to take a class. = \

Man, I'd forgotten what a pro Jeff is. Last time I saw him, he kept accidentally dropping the piece he was making because the powdered color on the outside of his piece was preventing a good bond with the clear. Man, that guy is good

is the gold leaf used a special one used in glass making? also what happens to the scraps of glass removed during the crafting process? are they remelted and used again in another piece or are they discarded entirely?
@butterflyforeve
@butterflyforeve 6 жыл бұрын
Brissy Girl the gold leaf looked like your everyday run of the mill leaf. And from watching these I have heard them say that it's discarded, something about it not being as stable as it was prior or something like that.

@corningmuseumofglass

Hi, the colorless scrap can be added to the pot of colorless glass in the furnace and remelted. The colored scraps are recycled through third-party vendors. Thanks for watching!

I have noticed on several occasions by different artists that say for a foot of the boblet you push from the inside out rather than pull from the base ( pipe end ) up. May I ask the reasoning ?
@corningmuseumofglass
@corningmuseumofglass 6 жыл бұрын
Ricky - Im not sure I completely understand your question. If I go in the wrong direction let me know , but when opening a blown foot, the glass is thin and soft and just needs to be gently "pushed" but the jacks into place. If you "pull" the glass, you can create thin flat spots that are hard to control and are overall, difficult to keep smoothly curving in a somewhat trumpet-like form.

What is the difference between glass and crystal?
@corningmuseumofglass
@corningmuseumofglass 4 жыл бұрын
Hi, David Whitehouse, Former Museum director, defines "crystal" as: "A popular term for colorless lead glass which has a high refractive index and consequently is particularly brilliant. Today, the word is often used to describe any fine glass tableware." You can learn more about the difference between glass and crystal here: libanswers.cmog.org/faq/144281. Thanks for watching!

I can't watch this incredibly awful cinematography. It is irritating beyond reason. Corning spends damn good money for A/V production crew that can't wield a camera properly. it is like this in so many of the vids. Excellent content though...
