Marty and Signe had a beautifully harmonic resonance. What stands out here is the beginning, but growing influence of Jorma's psychedelic blues rock style guitar. There always was a musical mystery that went along with this band. This shows the beginning of it, as the J.A. became a major voice for us 17 year olds graduating high school in '66. Those who were there (San Francisco in the sixties) say that 1966 was the real musical and counter-cultural peak. By the "summer of love" the following year, publicity and media overkill was ruining it all. These recordings seem to capture that peak perfectly.

Very true , at that time LSD was not illegal - nobody knew what it was . The music was mostly folk / pop , romantic and happy , every family seemed to have four or five children , and most went to church on Sunday . Back then weed was not everywhere , and you were in trouble if you got caught with it . Morale was high as the U. S. Army and Marines poured into South Vietnam to help them stop the Communists ....

This IS it people. This WAS the time to be oh so alive. Oh how I want to be exported to the time machine now - and be transported back to this time/place. I'm staring in the face turning 55 years on earth in early November (2018). My 20s were spent in the 1980s. And while it was a good decade - for me give me the '60s pleez. Man was the planet rockin hard then. I'm a Kiwi (New Zealander) and I really loved the '70s over here listening to Scott McKenzie singing his anthem 'San Francisco'. I would have been 4 years of age when it was released in 1967 and I was hooked like a fish from the moment I first heard it on New Zealand radio air waves. I have only recently really hooked on to Jefferson Airplane as I prefer listening mainly to British rock artists; you know the ones 'Deep Purple', 'Led Zeppelin', 'The Who', The Rolling Stones'...However I will always give credit when it's due and in my humble opinion Jefferson Airplane was one phenomenal artist. The real proof of just how good an artist in my opinion is not by the amount of sales of their songs/albums in the charts. Oh no, I believe it is by how influential the artist is in the music industry. And that's a totally different measure to just sales. Artists who invent a music genre for example. Well ok that's pretty rare to achieve as it's not really a particular artist, rather a/the number of various artists who influence a music genre. And in that essence, boy did Jefferson Airplane influence the psychedelic rock music genre. They/it defined it! When I had my near-death motorcycle accident in 1990 at the age of 26, I ultimately lost my entire left leg, hip joint, and left side of my pelvis, plus I suffered numerous other internal injuries. I was in 2 different hospital Intensive Care Units in a critical condition for 3 weeks. In order to cope with the extreme amount of pain I was in, my body had to endure the greatest amounts of morphine the human body can take. And yes I tripped all through it. Some were pleasant while other episodes were horrifically terrifying - like feeling I was going to die. Let me tell you there is no other feeling like it and I wouldn't like my worst enemy going through it. Extreme paranoia. Yep experienced it all. So I guess, in some ways I can relate to Jefferson Airplane's music because it touches my soul in certain ways. I had to fight as hard as I possibly could for my life at the immediate moment my left leg was amputated at the knee after I slid on the open road off my motorcycle in to a farmer's paddock concrete fence post at over 100mph. I then had my near-death experience about a week later when surgeons performed a hemipelvectomy (amputation of the remaining leg plus hip joint and left side of my pelvis) as I had septicemia and there was a high probability it would spread in to my vital organs and if it had have then I would have died. I ran the hospital's blood bank dry of my blood type as surgeons flushed septicemia (blood poisoning) out of my body. Eventually surgeons found a fresh blood supply and I survived. I experienced the tunnel during the operation - also I had an out-of-body experience and I was able to rise up and look down on surgeons, doctors, and nurses performing their work. I also experienced the feeling and visions that I traveled to Mars (yep - the planet). It was cold and dusty (burgundy red). Ok so ever since I had my traumatic amputation I have suffered from the strongest amounts of chronic nerve pain that I cannot describe what it feels like - suffice to say it farking hurts like fark. It is 'managed' by the strongest legally prescribed pain meds from my G.P. - a cocktail. I also exercise as regularly as possible and eat as healthy as I can - no I don't follow any fad diets - just eat a balanced diet really - meat & 3 vege! Ok a bit of pasta...heaps of fresh fruit...and chocolate. I have always maintained that if a person is in pain, then do something about rather than whinge and moan about it. And believe me - I would eat eggs on boiling hot road tar seal if I had too! Chronic pain IS debilitating. Make no error - it will grind you down and it will turn you in to a monster you never ever thought would happen. So it needs to be managed and controlled. My nerve pain will never completely disintegrate from my consciousness. Therefore it is controlled to a level I am able to tolerate. And MUSIC is one of the best natural pain meds. So is exercise. I guess I can therefore verify that if you are in any pain - then for me, listening to Jefferson Airplane is an excellent form of pain killer. Thank you Jefferson Airplane - I will ALWAYS Fly Translove/Jefferson Airplane as it always gets me there on time.

With Grootna & Bodacious DF? I met him a few times & he was perfectly normal- no 'tude. His own Dad was selling a shoe box of commercial blank tapes of demos for $50 at a convention & having a hard time getting rid of them. I was tempted, but it's not a 'woulda, coulda, shoulda' moment. That's what 1 table cost! He just wanted his money back & Marty gave him permission so I don't think it was a big deal for him either way.

looking at this photo, Signe was really quite a conservative folk singer, round shouldered and downcast. Grace changed everything [or did she really] and then reverted to her former self. Very very interesting how many of us were infulenced by our surrounding but are not really that person at all.

I turned 70 this July, I can't believe that I'm 70, where did the time go? I sure miss my late teens and early 20s the music the chicks the cars, Woodstock, the concerts the cool clothes the movies the weed and LSD and staying up all night long listening and dancing to music. No worries at all. I sure miss Signe, Paul, Spencer, Skip and Marty, the Fillmore West and East, Winterland and so many other places I can't remember, I guess it's my age. Oh well I've still have my eyes and ears!

I came upon your comment via this video/ concert and(went down the rabbit hole)via another video about Skip Spence as acid casualty and then my interest in Jefferson Airplane's first incarnation. Anyway I must admit I am jealous of your age and the experiences you had in the 60's and probably into the 70's. I'd would give it all to be free as you and your friends probably felt. Being born in 68 I only experienced the 70's as a child and the the 80's as a teen which was was great as well but those times must have been a blast! Cheers! There are very, very few live recordings of her that I know of; these two sets and the Winterland tape are historic! What a voice!!

Hey David Boswell, I agree, and I like the way you slyly referenced Signe's JA successor in your comment. Among psychedelic/folk/acid rock bands, there was another terrific, lesser-known female vocalist, Barbara "Sandi" Robison, who sang lead for the LA-based folk/psych rock band The Peanut Butter Conspiracy, who had a quasi-hit in '66-'67, "It's A Happening Thing," another hippie love-and-peace anthem. The PBC's predecessor band was The Ashes, whose drummer until spring-summer '66 was none other than Spencer Dryden, who of course replaced the fired-for-unapproved-absence predecessor Alex "Skip" Spence as JA's drummer. Spence went on to form Moby Grape, and died tragically in 1998 just shy of his 52nd birthday. Dryden died in 2005, age 66, after a long battle with cancer. Signe and JA cofounder Paul Kantner died on the same day in January, 2016, both aged 74. Sandi Robison died of sudden-onset toxic shock syndrome (a phenomenon from badly-manufactured tampons at the time) in the spring of 1988, falling ill while performing onstage. They still have much more of the folk-influenced sound here than they did later on. Signe Anderson was definitely a good complementary singer for them, but just didn't have the star power that Grace Slick did.

have no proof , but hearing Jorma's vibrato's ( finger )warmth, and precision, I think that it was the nicely balanced semi hollow body 345, rather than the plank that is the Firebird .Which, CAN ,to great effect-be more edgy, and raw.

@@parallaxcontinuum7898 i have both period correct guitars and i must say they sound surprisingly similar. the thunderbird can be just as honky (watch muddy waters jazz festival copenhagen, the lead guitarist in the background) but sounds a lot clearer and balanced at the same time. sadly i've never seen a photo of jorma playing the guild on a stage!

Skip Spence actually left in May of 1966 and was replaced by Spencer Dryden shortly thereafter. Signe left October 15, 1966, the day after this performance.

The spaghetti factory Marty is referring to was an old spaghetti factory building at 478 Green St. (North Beach) that was converted in the 1950s into a restaurant/bar/cabaret named.... The Old Spaghetti Factory. It was a hip popular hang-out and place to gig for local SF musicians in the 1950s - 1960s. It closed in 1985.

I actually have a menu from The Old Spaghetti Factory dating from the mid 1960’s. It is so cool and very psychedelic. As a child, I was always fascinated with the menu and would get a kick out of the strange items served, and for the what it seems now, very cheap prices. This is a very valued item for me, as it was my father’s before passing on.
