How To Do Cardio (Without Losing Muscle)

"Cardio is killing your gains!"
Probably not.
Early science said that because weight lifting is anabolic and cardio is catabolic, then cardio will burn your muscle away.
But since then, higher quality, long-term research has shown you can balance cardio and lifting, as long as you do three things:
First: you do your cardio after weight training or at a separate time. It’s totally fine to do a quick, 5-10 minute cardio warm-up before lifting, but if you do your full blown cardio session before weights, you might take a strength hit.
Second: When doing high-intensity cardio, try to go for low-impact options like cycling or the elliptical. High-impact cardio like running and basketball are still great, just try to separate them from leg days by at least a day or two, and don’t overdo them.
Third: Monitor your strength. If you notice it dropping, you might be overdoing cardio. Tone back on the intensity or the amount.
BUT! Most importantly: even if there’s a little interference, you'll still make great gains as long as you're lifting consistently, sleeping well and eating enough.

Hi, I’m a beginner but cardio didn’t hurt my gains. Even im improving day by day. I do Ellipticals, walking and a short 3-4 minutes of running. Sometimes i pair this with 1-2 abs. I do cardio only when I feel I have sole strength left. I don’t do that on leg days and arm days, since I do biceps, triceps and forearms & I usually don’t have any time left.

The fact I watched athlean x when I was a kid and believed him so I literally cut out all forms of running when I was a great cross country athlete just because I was scared of not being able to put on muscle. Now I do both. I do at least 8km 6 days a week with 20km on the weekend with weight training afterwards and I’ve never been bigger

I'm getting ready for a marathon, running almost 70k per week over 3 days, and lifting on 3 other days, with one day off. I'm getting crazy big-it's better than lifting 5-6 days a week! Such a huge difference. The crazy part is, I've been a lifter for almost half my life, on and off. I left the game and didn’t lift for almost 3 years. But this time, when I started training for the marathon and returned to lifting, I gained more muscle in the last 6 months than I would have in a year and a half just lifting alone. Running does not kill gains it makes gains if you do other things right like nutrition sleep etc

Jeff C. was fully cited. Nippard is correct but I don't think Cavalier I saying g that ANY cardio will REVERSE gains... He's saying that the amount of cardio you do will have an impact on the amount of weight training g you can do, which subsequently (not directly) impacts your muscular gains.

Did a body recomp and did low impact treadmill on 9 then 11 incline at 3.8 speed for 30 mins and the fat came off like butter. Then strength training later that day. Things like Sleep, food and monitoring cortisol levels are contributing factors, and let's not forget consistency. I believe spacing them out by min 4 hours reduced fatigue and didn't interfere with muscle gains, nippard is right! 👍

I ride the bike 5 miles to the gym to superset 3 & 4 different lifts to keep the heart rate up, then shower and ride the bike back to the homestead. I dropped 38 lbs in the first 7 weeks, also due to big changes in my diet and over 1.5 years, I had stripped off 65 lbs and 30 years 😊 (actually now 62 according to the calendar) 👍. It CAN be done. I got mad at looking at the next waist size shorts and decided to get back in shape. I'm stronger than ever before and even have a 6-pack I never had before 😁😜

I hit the gym 4 times a week and I play high intensity football at least 1 - 3 times a week. I've been doing this for years and still made great progress on both ends of muscle hypertrophy and cardio. Sometimes I'll play football after a leg day session but recovery and eating has to be on point and allow rest days.

I do both. It's exactly as Jeff says: if you feel weaker, you're probably overdoing cardio a bit. I think it has to do with increased cortisol levels in the bloodstream. Since I started running, I don't build muscle as quickly, but I feel a lot better physically and mentally than when I was just lifting.

Was taught in the army to run before and after every workout, to be fair we wasn’t trying to max out our gains, just be efficient in warfare, you need to be able to run in all situations and full battle rattle is like 50lbs on your body. But great information, I’m just conditioned to run all the time in wooded areas or sand, no road work its bad for the joints

Cardio isn't just for burning thise calories away. It builds mitochondria in the muscles used AND in the heart. It helps with increasing glycogen storage, it build capilaries, it lowers the heart rate by increasing output volume, it reduces stress. Although I have 30 years of lifting under my belt, if I have time constraints, I skip a lifting session, never missing the weekly cardio goal.
