Most of the time we are wearing clothes. For the whole summer most people get maybe 2-3 weeks being shirtless / on the beach or the pool. Bear mode is better for 9 months of the year. Then before the summer you can do a small cut and be fine for two months. My reference is for people who don't live in Cali and go to 9-5 jobs

@@johnkennedyreyes2634 Besides as Alex from Alphadestiny said in his videos on bear mode, its about being between 15-18% bodyfat, that shouldn't really make most guys look fat or get a doublechin. Its a completely healthy amount of bodyfat, you might lose definition on your abs, but then again, im 6'1 at 210lbs with a Bodyfat% somewhere between 17-18, and yes I got a bit more fluff, i'm also not at my natural max yet, I bet if I could get the last 5lbs of muscle there is in me, i'd look pretty yoked, and you aswell lad. Even at this level of bodyfat I stil have visible abs in the right light. So bear mode is ideal if you wanna look big, just big and buff, not fat not lean, just buff. But remember to key in on the specific muscle groups, Neck, Traps, Shoulders and Glutes. Really makes a huge difference!

Me and my brothers have all been avid weight-lifter's for a long-time, and one of my brothers "Bulked-up" when he was about 30. Sure, he became bigger and stronger than he'd ever had been before. And, yes, he was happy getting to eat something besides grilled chicken, salads, tuna, etc. BUT, what was once a chisel'd and well-defined FACE had also become vastly more puffy and round than it had been before. (*He was a VERY successful model in his early to mid 20's. Yet, you'd never know it looking at him in "bear mode.") Also, if you're 30-35, or older, LOSING the weight will become vastly more difficult, and it might take YEARS to achieve the same body you had previously (without any extra skin, or other negative side-effects.) Bottom line: The goal for every single one-of-us, in the gym, (besides those competing in body-building) should be to do what makes us the happiest or the healthiest. Maybe it's just because I'm older now, but I no longer strive to obtain certain results at the gym, my ONLY concern is FEELING good physically, and perhaps more importantly, feeling good mentally. And, since I've had this outlook, I find my experience at the gym to be much more fulfilling.

I'm 39 this year and can cut weight no problem whenever I choose. If you have a good base (ie played sports & trained most of your life) and actually enjoy the positive effects from eating healthy and training it's absolutely no issue. 90% is in the mind. And mentally I'm far stronger than I was in my 20's. Does depend on your body type and if you're prone to serious injury though.

Dirty bulking for 3 months now. Started at 87 kg 10.5% bf and i am at 102 kg now. I am 19 years old. What i have to say is that the strenght you get from this is quite amazing. Lifts went from: bench 140x1 to 155x1 squat 155x1 to 180x1 dl 200x1 to 220x1 and most amazing of all ohp from 80x1 to 110x1 strict (kg). I will continue for 3 more months and cut back down. Feeling stronger every week. New prs coming every other day but tbh i kinda feel like shit on a cardio level. I havent done a body fat test but i will probably be arround 18%-20% right now. Thats my experience so far. If you want the strenght gains its amazing. If you want to build muscle you will be better on a lean bulk and if you want to be overall bigger it should work fine as long as you dont expect 80% of the weight you gain to be muscle... (more like 5%-10% of it will probably be). Hope this helps good luck!

Besides, I love pizza, beer, and ice cream, so it's an easy choice for me. When I was young and free, I could spend an hour in the gym, and run all day either actually running or playing every sport. Life and family allow me an hour a day if I'm lucky, and I would rather be strong.

Bear mode just makes the most sense if you are a hard working non professional body builder. Unless you are competing there is no reason to bulk and cut, it’s just better to always think of “recompisition” if that makes any sense. Edit: in other words bear mode is NOT a “dirty bulk”

Roo lol you had to go to an extreme to make a point? My point is eat as clean and healthy as possible, sure who said not to? I am saying though if you aren’t making money off of this or a professional what exactly is the point of bulking and cutting all the time? Just saying a life long “recomp” with a reasonable calorie intake is the way to go if you just want to be a healthy good looking guy. Cutting actually puts a toll on your body, and if you don’t maintain your super low body fat percentage all year round wtf is the point of putting yourself through that??? I was even pointing out that bear mode was never intended to be a “dirty bulk”. It’s more of a lift heavy, be muscular, and feel great not starving while being at a respectable body fat.

To stay on target with your goals I feel its important to focus on strength during bulks. Also it's good to continue to do cardio and stretching for about 20-30 mins about 3x a week. Also I've found writing down a date that you're going to start cutting again is essential. It's easy to fall in love with the size and strength just like it is easy to fall in love with being ripped and it can cause you to bulk much longer than you wanted to before starting..

I'd like to see the affects on heart health, cholesterol level, and blood pressure when in "bear mode" vs "cutting" Edit: With the passing of Scott Murray I’m even more curious about this question. At what point do we put unnecessary pressure on ourselves in training, and put ourselves in danger of a cardiac related emergency.

Yet another solid video! I think for some people another difficult thing about the bear mode approach has to do with where a person tends to store body fat. In my case, my body fat gets stored around my obliques and lower abs so when I go into a big caloric surplus, I seem to just get a bigger waist. On the other hand, there are people who store fat in their triceps, glute area, or even quads, which for the purposes of looking bigger in clothes is actually to their major advantage. Even at 183lbs, Jeff's waist is still way under control, and I'm super jelly of those quads lol

I think it's important to note that the situation is very different depending on whether you're beginner, intermediate or advanced. That's exactly the point of the Garthe et al. study. They showed that the 500-1000kcal excess adapted to the bulking of a beginner would be way too much for an elite athlete. Which is not really something new: we knew that, while beginners can have a large calorie excess and still lose fat, advanced strength athletes will optimise their lean bulking around something like maybe a 200kcal excess (an excess you don't even notice if you don't track your nutrition very rigorously).

Finally someone gets it. Bear mode is more of a body fat range. That doesn’t mean you should be at 5% body fat and eat in a 2k surplus to get there. It means eating 300-400 Calories over each day for a long time until you are higher body fat but have also gained a substantial amount of muscle tissue in the process. Otherwise you are just fat. And fat isn’t bear mode.

I think bear mode can pay off in a big way: Most naturals get lean once and they tend to fear body fat. Then they restrict gains by trying to gain such tiny amounts of weight weekly they are likely restricting their true potential gains trying to stay too lean. Now this doesn’t mean gain 2 lbs a week, it just means not trying to limit yourself to .25lbs a week or less. You could spend a month trying to gain and not detect measurable weight gain because you are gojng so slow, it’s hard to know if that water fluctuations or actual tissue growth.

What you are talking about here is less "Bear Mode" and more "Dirty Bulking". You can hit still hit "Bear Mode" with a "Clean Bulk" that will have much better results because its "Slow and Steady Wins the Race"... Your point here is still very valid as dirty bulking @600+ calories will give you a massive amount of fat gained so dispite gaining the extra muscle you'll lose it all if you ever try to slim down again. You never burn strictly fat in a cut no matter how good you do it and with that much fat to lose you will lose most of that muscle and live in hell while you have to cut a long time

Elite athletes are surely going to have the vast majority of their potential muscle mass already on their skeletons, and are highly unlikely to build any new mass in 8-12 weeks, just look at a pro or even non-amateur bodybuilders, elite athletes are going to be very acclimatised to the stress of resistance training. This should've been performed on a sample group of beginners or at the very most intermediate lifters if we can define those groups with any accuracy.

Great video Jeff. I think this suits a lot of people who are naturally a little thicker (ever around the waist) build strength and still look good. Seems like a pretty solid way to go if you're not interested in having a six pack or loads of striations. But again this should not be taken as a eat what you want and get overweight! Keep your conditioning (strongman style) and bulk up!

Your videos are very informative I’m not into all the numbers and stuff but I definitely overstand that food is for fuel and staying vital not totally for pleasure. I run from the sight of a whopper combo now. But before it looked so appetizing. A turkey or lean beef burger made at home with fresh cut veggies is waaaay better.

I have a slender physique - 5'9", 140 lbs. - a while back I tried to build mass by lifting much heavier and eating about 50g more protein daily. End result: pounded my joints and put on fat! When I looked to studies about protein intake I found just what Jeff showed here, you don't need lots of excess protein. I went back to normal. Work hard, eat well, listen to your body.

There is another advantage to bear mode, which is that you know for sure you're in a caloric surplus. A 50-calorie surplus is hard to maintain. On any given day you might actually be in a deficit and not know it, due to higher than normal activity. That may be the reason the bulking group showed more muscle gain over the same time period -- they had no deficit days.

@James ClewlowHey thabks man. I had taken myself down to where I believed I was ready for show about 2 weeks out and believed that the judges would be looking for more of a fuller look so I put myself in a small surplus just to fill out a little extra. It seemed to have worked on the day with added sodium and a slight intake of creatine each day.

Hi Jeff putting on 20 or so pounds in Bear mode I don't feel is that extreme on your 5'5 frame and a more live able physique is a perfectly acceptable goal if you are not competing. If you are within 10 to 20 pounds of ideal year round I think that's great. Obviously if you wanna slim down some for summer simply incorporate some additional cardio and change up your nutrition. The goal is to look good, feel good, be healthy. Of course you can change up heavy and more detail training. I agree you can some incorporate Bear mode with other modes and individualize it to your goals. Thank you for trying it and sharing what you learned.

Bit if advice when doing “bear mode” or bulking. Eat a high calorie diet roughly 3-4 thousand calories a day but make sure it’s somewhat healthy food with good fats is unprocessed and high in good quality protein this way u bulk up but u put on less fat and feel healthier stuff like cheese cake and chocolate milk is just going to make u fat and sluggish, But a treat occasionally is ok.

Bear mode all the way. In your average gym I tend to lift heavier weights than most people, but that's cause I focus on strength. It's sad to see everyone so preoccupied with being thin, so they do circuits, high volume, and it's like they go through all these reps but not really pushing themselves hard. Hitting those PRs is where the fun is at.

no thats because you lack any discipline to stick to a strict diet so like most powerlifters or strongman, they started out training to look like superman but realized they couldn't diet for half a day but decided there was another avenue to stroke their ego lifting weights just for the fuck sake of it and still eat their mcdonalds and cheesecakes everyday....not everyone gives a shit about PRs and most powerlifters i know are fat, unhealthy and extremely lazy, couldnt even do anything outside a deadlift, squat or bench movement in real life...no different than the rest of our lazy society...
@themagescorner
@themagescorner 6 жыл бұрын
@@JasonSmith-fu6oi well first of all, any exercise is better than no exercise. I do think a lot of people who workout though don't put the extra oomph needed in their rep to make real gains. I mean, I come out of a workout literally sweating a river, make my face look ugly during reps... but when I look around 75% of the gym are casually doing some lifting following some standard 12-15 reps, but never actually reaching failure. As for dieting, you can bulk without eating loads of junk food, but I don't see the purpose of eating less when training for strength requires more eating. I mean, women don't care about abs anyways, only gay men like yo ass.

Just came from Alpha's channel, you at 183 (although I am 5' 8') is exactly where i want to go. The pic right after the 160/183 split would be my ideal year round, with maybe a touch of trimming for summer. I just turned 59 so ripping up to sub 10% fat just not appealing. Currently a chunky 210, somewhat strong, but I have been way strong and want to get back to that. My plan/goal is to be stronger at 60 than I was at 40. I started with push ups and can do 45 quality consecutive...shooting for 100. Now I am busting out my old weight set. -Cheers

I've been an inconsistencies lifter for a couple of years. Feb 8th of this year I decided to start following a Push/Pull/Leg/rest. When I started, according to my cheap scale I was 155lbs at 18% body fat. I am eating very clean, for my standards. No fast food, no sugary drinks, no alcohol. All home cooked meals. I am always hungry and continue to get more hungry as time goes on. I am now at 167 and it tells me that I'm 19% body fat. Strength is my main goal but I would like to stay between a 15-18% body fat. Though, with this new found hunger, it can make it difficult to sleep, focus, and study. So I seem to have to keep eating until I am, not stuffed, but satisfied. How do I achieve a balance between meeting goals? Goals being, able to get good sleep that isn't interrupted by hunger, able to focus, and also get down to 15% body fat? Is it all possible or will I have to sacrifice one? Kind of like how you said in this video, there is a peace of mind for being okay with being at a higher body fat percentage. Any advice or suggestions would be amazing. Thanks!
