The irony is, if you could go back and redo your 20s, and come all the way back to this point in your life, you'd have a completely different set of regrets and things you wish you'd done differently. We're ALWAYS going to have regrets, because none of us are perfect. Don't live your life in fear of making a mistake or doing something you'll regret later. It's alright to do things less than perfectly, or the do the wrong thing only to suffer consequences down the road... that's just a natural part of trying to do your best in a chaotic and unpredictable world. What matters is that you DO IT, you reach out and act on what you want, and never be immobilized by that fear of doing it wrong or not being capable enough to do it. Just do it.

17-19 is tough, and it's really important to live in the persent like he said. Life isn't a race and it doesn't have a finish line, you don't have to have everything figured out by your 20s. Take time to enjoy the present, you have plenty of time and there is no need to rush things. ❤️

As a 37 years woman, if I had to give you one advice it would be - resist the peer pressure. You don't have to fit the mold. You don't have to marry, have kids, everything figured out by 25. I met my husband when I was 33, he's 2 years older than me, and we built our live together, because we were both ready for it. Also - giving up is good, it's not a failure, some things, relationships, activities etc. are just not working, and it's ok to drop it. "Fake it till you make it" is not always the best aproach. If it doesn't work walk away, you will thank yourself later. Make an effort, try, but don't force it.

Friendships can go through busy seasons... like you're really close, then for a few years people are busy with building careers and/or families, then you come back to each other and re-connect. If you keep even a bit of contact through the years, you might end up with people who help you through caring for aging parents, your first hip replacement.. you know, "old people" stuff :)

Turning 37 this year and I think my biggest thing that I wished I did/learned in my 20s is that there's not a lofty goal for everyone. Sometimes you just find a job that pays the bills and hobbies, and that's enough. There's too much pressure to be the next X, Y, or Z and it's not for everyone. Now that I've realized that there's nothing wrong with being a general laborer, I'm a lot happier in my day to day stuff. Don't feel pressured to find a career, sometimes it's not in the cards.

@@jamielaw4749I can answer that. I am 28 this year, and I survived most years of my life. Yes, survived. I thought I was not good enough compared to my others peers, even more when I discovered a severe genetic illness. Looking back I now understand a lot of those people who made me believe that, and allowing myself to grow little by little, now I think I can dream bigger then most of them. Some of them are looking for a job now even if they started ahead of me, when I found a stable one. Like Doc said: pave your own path. If you are struck with doubt constantly, consider talking about it with a specialist, but don't ever ever let any idiot come to you and judge you by their idiotic and inferior parameters

Definitely listen to your body and take care of yourself. I also developed a mystery illness when I was 22 after I came down with mono from Epstein-Barr Virus. I pushed myself to recover, forced myself to remain active despite how I felt, and I did so much harm. I had to leave my job, abandon plans to apply to med school or PA school and move back in with my parents. I was eventually diagnosed with severe myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME/CFS) and over the years many other comorbid conditions. I’m now 37, disabled, still living with my parents, completely homebound aside from doctors appointments and essentially bedridden. I wonder where I would be now had I taken the time to rest and recover. Best wishes to you!!!

I was in my 20s when I got diagnosed with a chronic condition out of nowhere. Turned out to be genetic. The years following were a terrible up and down with really low lows and okay highs. The mental and physical drain it had and continues to have is difficult, but it gets better. I've been taking care of myself even better now and it is paying off. Health is wealth, as they say. You never know how important it is until you're holding on to it. I'm wishing you well. Remember your health is priority over everything else. Take that day of rest or heck, even a whole week. my biggest regret from my 20s was knowing what i wanted to do but not how to make that happen. i relied too much on other adults telling me what to do, how to do it, when & where, and i ended up missing the boat entirely and now i'm too far behind and i have a degree in a field i wasn't initially interested in that i can't put to use because i didn't take it far enough. so when my daughter tells me she wants to be a programmer, we're already laying out the high school courses she needs to take, the college she needs to go to, the certifications she can get independent of a formal education that will get her foot in the door. i don't want her to waste time waiting for someone else to open the door for her like i did.

I have the exactly same regret, though I was only in my late teens when the decision was made. My parents didn't want me to go to university at all and I didn't have any other adults to support my dream either. My current career is kind of okay and it pays well, but it just kills me a little to read on the news that my original dream career suffers from the lack of educated employees. It still would require me to relocate to the other side of the country for years of studies which is a lot harder to do when you're grown-up with memory issues and a mortgage. I hope things will work out for you daughter whether its programming or something else 😊

I'm in my mid -40s and, yeah, all this. Learning to do stuff alone is SO important, and I want to add that you don't have to give up a lot of the fun stuff that you thought you were supposed to outgrow. You're allowed to go back and do it, no matter how "silly" or "childish" it is, once you're not scrambling to finish homework or find a job all the time. I sorta-dropped out of a hobby that I felt like I should have been over when I was in my later 20s, and realized later that that was totally unnecessary and there were zero reasons for me not to go back and not only do it, but do it better now that I was older and smarter. The "do stuff alone" is definitely one of the hardest but you must love yourself first and accept that things evolve i.e. friendship, careers, etc. And yes, please TRAVEL it will open up your mind to a whole new place and will help you be more independent. Additionally, learn from your past relationships and be accountable. One last thing if I can add to what Dr. Mike mentioned, don't worry about other peoples' opinions about you- do you! At the end of the day, you know yourself better than anyone and who really cares about you. All love!

As a 24 year old I related to most of these things, and I'm really hopeful that there's time to turn some of it around. I can't go back in time to make friends in college, join college clubs to enrich my life, or eat less fast food and junk food in my teens and early 20s, but I can start managing my money better and eating healthier.

This is one of my favorite videos of yours! I’m 27 and can really identify with many of these points. I gave up the majority of my 20’s pursuing my Doctorate while most of my friends were getting married, buying houses, having kids, etc. I have been working on reminding myself that I am on my own path and to not compare my story with everyone else’s. It can definitely be difficult when seeing everyone’s “perfect lives” on social media.

You don't have to have everything at 30 :) Don't stress yourself with getting married or having kids. I'm 29 now and also not having kids yet but pursuing my academic career. I really like it this way. Having kids at this point wouldn't make me happy, it would be too early. But also most of my friends don't have kids yet, so that's normal for me. I enjoy having that much time for myself, my boyfriend, my parents, my career, my friends, my hobbies, travel etc. You'll never have that much time and little responsibility again once you have kids. Also you should remember that no life is perfect. A friend of mine (she's 30) has finished med school and a 2 y/o child with her boyfriend. So you could think it would be a great life. But it isn't. She's extremely unhappy all the time since she got pregnant. She's just tired and sad all the time because her boyfriend is neglecting her, the toddler, the household. She's got no career and is thinking about how she can leave him now, because she's got no money of her own since she stopped working after she got pregnant. But it is hard for her to start working again because she hasn't worked for nearly 3 years now. So that's also a reminder for me, that I will never give up my career.

I'm halfway through my 20's. I'm definitely not regretting learning how to cook early, it is amazing. Another food related lesson is that the store-brand ingredients can be just as good as brand-name because you're presumably using them as ingredients of a more elaborate meal; this will save you a ton of money. Putting together a grocery budget and keeping track of food spending is absolutely recommended (Include eating out in the same budget!!). I wish I knew how to just be myself and not to change myself or my interests in an attempt to get someone to like you (romantically or even platonically) - it is not sustainable and you will be found out.

I hate being single and seeing my elementary school classmates getting married and having babies scares me because I felt behind in life . Like many, she believed a dad needed to be around, while I watched her doing her job just fine. This gave the confidence I could do anything on my own. And all her friends were single, they had fun and enjoyed life to their fullest, just like you're doing. I aslo believe if something is meant to happens, it will, at the right time.

A lot of times when I tell people I'm studying to become a mental health counsellor, they tell me "oh, but you could become a psychologist and get paid more". I think most of the people that say that have never gone to therapy (even if they could really benefit from it). The people who have given me support are those that understand the struggles people go trough, and understand that we need compassionate people to help, and not do it simply because of the money.

I turn 20 next week, and I had already figured some of these out. I’ve long struggled with maintaining friends because I lose interest. But in 9th grade, it was multiplied by a pretty nasty breakup. With this, my parents are often all I’ve got for in-person time (especially during summers). The one that says “don’t rush relationships” is the one I knew and truly agree with. I’m one of those people who would much rather have the right girlfriend for me, not just a girlfriend.

I'm doing better now, but I still have trouble with it. don't hang on to the past and say, "I wish I did this, and I wish I didn't do that". the past is just a memory that pops up and it's good to look back on your past and improve from that, but we all need to move forward! thanks dr. 1:55 this is important! I had a friend i knew since age 3. For her 18th she kinda screwed me over and treated me a bit shitty. I had a panic attack and the next day when i told her she never messaged me back. It was a year later (last year 2022) when i found out she died in a car accident and i was invited to her funeral. Don't be petty. Or even if its valid and not petty, try your best to make amends because the guilt and grief i felt after her death is only just settling. There’s more to life than just work and it’s imperative to find a work/life balance. Some jobs will literally have you devote your whole life to them and it’s not ok.
