Jeff, you just saved me a lot of heartache and headaches. We're trying to do a shower reno. We like our existing shower head as it is new, but we wanted to change the faucet trim and handle because it definitely hasn't been changed since the 1980s. We had no idea that in order to change this, the faucets come with a valve uniquely designed to fit it. There was some miscommunication and misunderstandings around what we wanted and we missed our opportunity to change the valve when the wall was open and all the pipe work was being done. I was feeling so despondent. I was about to have a brand spanking new shower and going to be stuck with an ugly faucet from the 1980s! I looked up shower trims to see if I could at least change the plate if not the handle and low and behold I came across this video. I may not get the exact faucet I want but this is a million times better than what I was about to end up with. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU for making this video!

You make a point to talk about sealing off the escutcheon plate so water doesn't get in behind, and then you fail to install the sleeve gasket, leaving plenty of room for water to get in...sleeve goes on first, sleeve gasket attaches to back of plate, then plate goes on with the gasket sealing off the sleeve.

Hardware/big box stores carry Moen trim kits/plates that are plastic. Actual plumbing stores have metal ones. All the big brand name faucet companies ( ex. Moen, Delta, American Standard ) make different lines for the hardware/big box stores compared to the "plumbing" shops. That's why they may be cheaper....but you do get what you pay for. Oh....and Moen offers an adapter ring to switch from "old style" ( non-pressure balanced/ parallel horizontal plate screws ) to new style -1&7 ( appx ) screw plate styles!

Thanks - this was exactly what I was looking for! I have what looks like a loose shower faucet knob and I think this will help me fix it. One question - if I'm only interested in replacing the knob handle is turning off the house water still necessary? Or, if I have things open should I be replacing the shower cartridge as well, in which case I *would* need the water off anyway? Thanks for the great video!
@jeffostroff5 жыл бұрын
Peter yes if you are just changing the knob you can get away with out having to turn off the water but be very careful. Make sure you understand the mechanism of what would make the cartridge come flying out at full pressure. For example on the Moens it's that little vertical horseshoe shaped clip that you would have to pull straight up out of the top to remove the cartridge so just understand so that it doesn't happen to you. I don't know the condition of your escutcheon plate but I often like to replace both the knob and the plate because it looks out of place when you put a brand new nah but you still have an old rusty corroded soap scum filled plate. Depending on how old your previous shower cartridge is it's always a good idea to just put a new one and they're really only about $10 or so. If you do decide to replace the cartridge I would recommend getting some plumber silicone grease and just put a dab of it rub it around the black O rings that are on the outside of the cartridge usually 2 or 3 of them.
@PeterTirrell5 жыл бұрын
@@jeffostroff Thanks! I think I'll probably go the safe route and cut it off anyway. My current knob looks pretty much exactly like the one in your video, mines a moen, too. Hello there, if I'm using the same brand (delta) to update my shower fixtures. Do I need to replace the valve?

Replacing the valve is optional but I like to replace it when I have the wall open. You can just replace the cartridge which is what I do. I only replace the valve if I'm buying all new shower kits that come with a new valve and cartridge, so it has to be soldered into the 4 pipes.

Very good video! I was in the process of switching out my hardware as well and turns out the screw holding the the shower knob on was completely stripped out. Also seems as if the threads are stuck/corroded. I’ve tried EVERYTHING to get that old screw out of the brass stem and it’s not budging. Is my best bet to buy a new replacement cartridge? My handle style is the single ball-shaped knob that levers up/down to turn water on/off and twists left/right for hot/cold.

Ross go to home depot and look for the Speed Out Screw extractor kit that has worked for me a number of times. If you still can't get the screw out you may have to change out the cartridge and I would make sure that you have the water shut off 1st Otherwise the water will come gushing out at you when you pull out the cartridge.

That is correct, they supply an adapter that screws onto the stem, then the handle attaches to the adapter . You still pull the metal handle to turn on water, and turn left or right for hot and cold water.

Great video. Toward the end you say you replaced an "old pull knob". I'm not very experienced, but I thought you couldn't replace a "pull to activate" mechanism (which is what I have) with a "turn to activate" mechanism (at least not easily). But is that what you did? If so, I'll give it a try!

What if I just wanna Replace the the Valve & Plate alone should I still take off my Water Also when replacing my Faucet the Diverter or Shower Mechanism is at the back do I need another Water Spout/Faucet with that or it doesn't have to be the same
@jeffostroff3 жыл бұрын
If you only replace the knob and the plate no need to shut off water. But I like t replace the valve with the stem, that requires shutting off water. I replace the valve with the same one I took out, those are required to work with your existing diverter inside the wall soldered to the pipes. When we do a full wall gut, we solder a brand new diverter on usually the Delta MultiChoice Universal Valve, and try to buy it as a kit with the new valve and everything.

@@jeffostroff Well... it "half turned out"; a couple years ago I purchased a new showerhead/handle/faucet set because it was on sale and I thought that I would use it someday... This goes against what you said about first taking apart your existing shower handle, to see who the manufacturer is . I lucked out and the existing is a Moen.. and so is the new one. I do have an issue which I hope that you can assist in... the new set came with a new 4-way plumbing valve - when I saw that I said "hell no"... and set about seeing if I could use what I had. Everything seems to fit except for the fact that I have a gap between the handle and the cover plate... there are a couple plastic fittings included in the set.. I'm hoping that they are some type of adapter so that I can make this work. I took photos... let me see if I can post them - any help that you can provide will be greatly appreciated. p.s. I DID NOT caulk around the bottom of the shower plate!

@@karlaelvis9815 put photos online and post the link to them. Often when you buy a new shower kit that comes with it's own 4 way valve, that means time to solder in the new valve. There could be minute differences, new design, did you see if the new valve is the exact same dimensions as the old valve? Anything look different at all? If so, might have to call in a plumber. Had one done at a friend's house 2 months ago, cost $150 for the plumber to do it.

@@jeffostroff The new valve is slightly larger in diameter than the old valve... the old "sleeve" fit, so I left it.... I may just put the old plastic handle back on - the shower is a molded fiberglass unit - they did a nic job cutting the hole for the valve - but the shower will be need to cut again to change out a new valve. I have a friend that is a plumber, so I could do this for no charge.... but all I wanted to do was change the shower head - which I did! I think that I can cut the sleeve shorter and that will solve the problem of the gap.. I'll have my friend take a look - thanks for all of your help!

If im just replacing the trim kit and NOT the cartridge, do i need to cut the water off?
@jeffostroff4 жыл бұрын
No, as long as you don't attempt to pull out the shower cartridge you are fine. If your cartridge has a small metal clip that slides down and hold sit all into place, do not remove that clip or water will shoot everywhere.

Great instructunal vid! Have a question tho, mine is the exact configuration, the old pull out system. With the more modern single handle would I need to pull out to release the water or what's the mechanism, tilt, pull out, etc.? you appear to just swing it left to right, but I assume that's after the water flows to adjust the temp correct?
@jeffostroff2 жыл бұрын
IT depends on the shower valve that is soldered into your wall with the cartridge. Many modern day cartridges just turn on counter clockwise and get warmer

Hey Jeff, great video man. I just broke my shower handle. It looks exactly like the replacement u used. My handle broke off with the copper spindle. Is that a job for a professional plumber or is it possible to DIY?
@jeffostroff4 жыл бұрын
Sorry to hear that if you can get it taken apart and looks like the cartridge it not damaged, you can try to replace it yourself, then if it doe snot work call the plumber. Just remember to shut off the main water supply before you pull out a cartridge, as that is what is holding the pressurized water back.

What if that center shaft that the handle attaches to just spins and doesn’t shut the water off? Do they make replacement guts or do you have to remove the whole 4 way out of the wall ?

Do you suggest silicone or caulking to glue the plate to the wall?
@jeffostroff2 жыл бұрын
Whenever you're in a wet area I always use silicone never use latex caulk it will dry and crack overtime and cause leaks. clear silicone works best around fixtures
