The Piano Sonata by Samuel Barber is just possibly the most important piano sonata written by a twentieth-century American composer. It consists of four movements and each one has its own perfectly etched personality. But the first two notes that you hear at the beginning of the piece-C flat to B flat-are embedded in the themes of all the movements, hinting at a unifying thread throughout the work. The fourth movement is one of the most epic fugues ever written for solo keyboard.
