Program notes by Jeffrey Chappell for this piece:
What is a sonata? A group of usually three or four related pieces that follow certain conventions regarding form. Beethoven answered this question with thirty-two sonatas, and each one explored and redefined the genre. Opus 109 is one of the last three sonatas, renowned for their condensation of musical materials-“more music per minute” as it has been said. Beethoven juxtaposes contrasting ideas, forcing listeners to build their own connections to understand the coherence. The last movement is a set of variations, each with its own powerfully unique character, building to a long set of shimmering trills like a celestial vision.
