Program notes by Jeffrey Chappell for this piece:
What is “spianato”? It’s another version of the word “piano”, which translates from the Italian in several related ways. “Piano” as a noun is “plane” in English, meaning something flat or level, and as an adjective it connotes being quiet and peaceful, like the surface of a placid lake. Here is another pair of contrasting pieces, the first one serene and the second one brilliant (“brillante”), with Chopin putting the characteristic Polish rhythm in the left hand while tasking the right hand with daredevil leaps and runs-and the occasional songful melody-before leading to a fireworks ending.
