The one that hits me is the deaf guy. He was a giant ball of love and that sick bastard just took all of it away. The thing I actually appreciate with the series was that they showed the victims as actual human beings and not just nameless nobodies that the audience doesn't give a second thought about.

Netflix hit every nail on the head with the miniseries...focused on the gross neglect from the police dept at that time, which sets the tone of why Jeff was able to go on for as long as he did..

Glenda Cleveland did not live in the Oxford Apartment building. She also never met Jeffrey Dahmer. Her daughters found Konerak Sinthasomphone and she called the police following up on him. That was all. Everything else was made up by Netflix. No sandwich. No noise complaints. And as far as the police go, no they fucked up big time. He was a convicted child sex offender and they didn't even look into it. They also never made racist phone calls to the victims family But Glenda Cleveland did not live in his building. People say, "how could they not listen to her?" Well, she called asking about Konerak, but she didn't say anything about Dahmer because she never even knew him. Dahmer's neighbors liked him. If you ask me, that's a better story than what Netflix made up. They made Cleveland's depiction to create an antagonist and to stir the pot. In reality her character didn't exist. His neighbors liked him and were all surprised by the things he did.

@@creamyburrito DON'T YOU DARE! There's NO excuse for those rotten cops to have NOT done their jobs. That child LITERALLY HAD someone speaking up for him. Ms. Glenda and her daughters were PLEADING with those cops to take a closer look at that boy. But the cops' bigotry and negligent ignorance got that boy murdered. NOT... AND I REPEAT...It was NOT because he wasn't able to speak for himself. He had voices speaking for him. They just weren't heard, because the voices came from black mouths, and fell upon white racist homophobic ears. THATS what happened that night. And there's LITERALLY a 911 phone call from that beautiful, wonderful, concerned lady, who called to check on that child's welfare. And she was brushed off as a burden and a nuisance. I know, TO YOU, you were just merely responding. But your response to the context of the OP implied that him being vocally incapacitated was the reason. And that factor is redundant, because he was sent an angel to speak up for him. And that night evil prevailed. And it does on many days and nights. That's the real world we live in. Whether you've experienced it or not.

I was surprised they put this series out on Netflix recently because I was old enough to know about Dahmer at the time when he was killing. And I remember when he got killed in prison, that was front page news. But this series is more for the new generation that wasn't around when he was creating terror in Milwaukee during that time. And this is the first time a series or show sheds some light on how Police don't always do their jobs, because police are shown as heroes and that's definitely not true!! lol So many bad police out there and corrupt police. Especially in the black communities where all of this was taking place.

Watching the Netflix series and learning about Jeffrey Dahmer had my emotions all over. I feel sad for the victims and Dahmer. I ended up reading many articles on the background of Dahmer to get a better understanding of his upbringing and childhood. I know we can’t always blame a persons actions or lack thereof on their upbringing however, how you were raised and the environment you were raised in matters. Now, I don’t know how much of the series was all true facts and what parts were for entertainment, but it seemed like Dahmer tried to tell his dad about his fantasies and that something was wrong with himself, and like some parents do, his dad blew him off, and tried to fix him by sending him to Ohio State University! I guess his dad didn’t want to believe what his son was going through was what he too went through as a young man. In the series Dahmer’s father told his new wife that when he was a young man, he also fantasized about killing people…Smh. Dahmer’s father should have listened to his son when he tried to confess. And off topic, why would you allow your son dissect dead roadkill? That’s not normal at all… Dissecting in a science class is a lot different then doing it in your garage. Then you allow him to use acid to dissolve the bones, definitely Not normal. Dahmer’s mom on the other hand never seemed to be present with Jeffrey and it seems like she neglected him a lot. Apparently, she was on tons of medication when she was pregnant with Jeffrey… and attempted suicide. It seemed like He had no guidance from his parents and no one to truly love him, or show him how to communicate. They were too busy worrying about themselves. It’s funny how Dahmer’s father tried to blame everything on Jeffery’s mom and how he turned out. His dad wasn’t present in Jeffrey’s life either. I see a lot of red flags in their family. There’s only a few people that can turn into decent useful human beings after being raised in such a household like the Dahmer’s. I hope the victims and their family’s have found peace in all of this!!

I think what keeps us coming back to true crime docs/shows/etc is that we think we will finally find the answer. The grand “why.” It’s the why that we so desperately want to find out. Why does a person do what they do? No matter how many stand points in psychology we have, it answers so much, yet nothing at all. Edit: What I mean by “yet nothing at all” is it feels absolutely impossible to wrap your brain around the unhinged violence, no matter how much more we continue to learn. I have massive amounts of respect for science and psychology, and find these things to be extremely fascinating like everyone else who loves true crime. But it will always be something I don’t think we will ever truly fully understand no matter how many answers we have. There are explanations behind why a person does what they do, but to carry through with it is just something completely unimaginable.
@austingoyne3039
@austingoyne3039 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah but I think it did a fantastic job of revealing the why. Dahmer was likely born with the potential for APD, and events in his early childhood and adolescence cemented the APD and other personality disorder(s). Constant instability and neglect molded what probably would have been a somewhat odd person, into a deranged monster. Ills of society made it easy to get away with, to become a habit. We have a decent picture of the why, minus exactly how one’s brain begins with this potential in the first place.

I actually feel bad for him. I work psych and it has been life changing, it’s changed the way I think of people and mental illnesses. It’s given me awareness that not everyone is born the same. Yes, I feel like he was manipulative, he did evil things, and maybe he is only showing some remorse or empathy because he was caught. But I do believe him. He didn’t really have any reason to lie about why he did what he did by the end of it. I don’t believe anyone is born evil, but every psych patient I’ve met was there due to something that happened to them in the past or the environment they were raised in. It wasn’t entirely the cause of why they tried to commit suicide or hurt someone else, but I have learned that it all contributes somehow when I talk to them from a place of no judgment. My mom and dad divorced when I was very young, I saw them fighting and aggressive when I was a young child too. My mom basically abandoned me leaving my dad to raise me with my grandmother. Substance abuse and mental health definitely played a role in her abandonment. But I had grandma and dad present and they instilled love into me and who knows where I would be without that. I know he says it’s not the blame of his parents or society but I do believe it affects you a lot. It is still affecting me today in ways I don’t even realize. What he did was horrible, he absolutely deserved to be locked up. But it also sounds like a serious case of OCD and obsessions, fixations, and he was also diagnosed with borderline personality disorder. That’s a tricky one. I am so sorry for all of the victims and their families as well. What Jeffrey done was evil and there is no doubt about that. Thankful for this series because it wasn’t just about jeff, it also shows the influences of society and makes us realize some deep issues in America that need to be brought to the surface. Cops don’t listen to minorities. Racism is very much still alive. The fact that he was able to go on with these killings for so long because no one stopped to think “hey, my kid isn’t normal, maybe we should see about his mental health” or because people simply didn’t want to be around gays and minorities and believed them to be lesser. My heart also breaks for the 14 year old boy. And the deaf man, Tony Hughes. It is obvious Jeffrey experienced remorse. Although he doesn’t outright say it and it is hard to gather that from his actions, he stopped for almost a decade. He knew he wasn’t normal. He described killing them as the worst part. Bipolar was a big reason behind his killings, due to a deep rooted fear of abandonment. I hope we can learn from this. I hope we can learn to not dismiss our children’s concerns and to listen to them no matter how much we want to believe there is not a problem. I hope we learn that mental health issues are real and everyone is struggling. I hope that minorities are listened to and heard one day instead of being ignored for the color of their skin or their sexual preferences. I hope problems aren’t dismissed due to white privilegeThere is no good and bad, not everything is black and white. I also pray for peace of the families and hope they find some form of comfort. I also hope Jeffrey’s family finds some comfort, I imagine it must be hard to find this out about your child one day and wake up every day wondering if it’s your fault your kid turned out to be a serial killer. Can’t imagine the guilt or the pain that comes from this. This case is heart breaking all around.

naturally, eerie and weird behavior makes humans curious as to “why” certain things have happened. i don’t think that these shows are necessarily for entertainment; but for recognition of facts. the cops were both phobic of people of color and homosexuals. even so, humans will naturally want to know HOW and WHY these people commit crimes. ultimately, we’ll never know. but, what i know for sure is that i certainly felt uncomfortable and wanted to stop watching the new series at times (due to incredible research and acting).. but i also wanted to see a closer look at the victimizers mindset. it’s science. some people may be more sensitive to factual events in history and others are curious to prevent history from repeating. it’s wild.

The only thing about the show is they portrayed Dahmer as some super awkward, disconnected person which he was not. He was charismatic, charming, intelligent, and well groomed. He was actually very awkward though, and most people would think he was weird, just not in any sort of creepy way. It wasn't charisma and charm at all, it was just his shy demeanor could be seen as sweet and attractive, if you're a gay man meeting him at the club. And yeah he was definitely clean-cut with the type of clothes he wore, his big dorky glasses, and his whole nerdy look. That was seen as endearing and cute by many of those guys, looking at him there was nothing to be scared of.

My 'girlfriend' Beth kept bugging me for a joint I didn't have, so I told her I'd go out and see what I could find for her... and me too. I found Jeffrey Dahmer on the corner of Juneau and Farwell. I had worked washing dishes and serving coffee at The Knickerbocker Hotel Pharmacy right nearby that location. Though he was standing there looking all around, and also looking 'smiley weird', I thought he was just out there looking to sell some of his weed. When I asked him he said, "I only have one joint left and it's over in my apartment by Marquette University. I'll just smoke it with you. You can even light it and take the first two hits off it. I'll take some after that and let you keep the roach for your girlfriend. I thought it was better than nothing so I started walking off with him... I am a skinny guy and Jeffrey Dahmer towered about a foot above my head and he 'had meat on me'. I kept feeling a strange feeling while walking with him. He didn't do any of the talking at all. But he did constantly stare down at me 'hungrily', he wasn't even looking where he was stepping. Who does that, I must ask. Well, at first I thought he was just trying to intimidate me , and that he would probably start some farcical contrived fist fight over nothing just so he could 'kick my butt' later when we got to his place. I assumed he was just another bully I'd have to watch my words with when we conversed together. Then he stared looking very creepy in the face and specially his eyes, or rather 'creepier' than what he had been looking already. Mama didn't raise a fool, but just the opposite. It wasn't worth walking the 5 or 6 more blocks we still needed to go, so I just said, "You know what, I think I'll just pass on the joint and tell her I couldn't find any. I'm pretty tired. I'm just going to go back home and go to bed early. Hey, I'll see ya around later sometime, okay?" He didn't like hearing that at all. He grew very, very angry at me and said, "NO! You're coming with me because you said you would! I need somebody to talk to tonight!!" Then he unexpectedly grabbed my left arm by the wrist very, very tightly(He was very strong, I'll give him that much). He wouldn't let go. I started punching on his arm where he was holding me hoping to break the guy's lock, but failed miserably. He got very angry about that and raised his arm and hit me on top of the head hard and was threatening to do it again. I said, "OKAY! OKAY!!...I'M SORRY!!" I got scared. I knew he was probably insane right then. I also grew very wise... I had to. I then realized that I had to lull him into a form of 'complacency' somehow so I could break free. Nobody was around except for an old couple far across the street walking the other way. They looked like they were hurrying to get somewhere. It was just after dusk and growing darker by the minute. I let him 'escort' me for another block and a half while relaxing my arm instead of puling it. Finally it worked. He either trusted I wouldn't try to break free or just grew tired of clenching my wrist tightly. He let up his grip just enough for me to suddenly pull away and flee about 15 feet away from him. He came right after me. I ran a little ways with him running after me. I saw something that I can't exactly remember what right now, I think it was a quart malt liquor bottle, but it might have been a piece of two by four. I think it was both maybe. I threatened him with whatever it was and eventually he gave up. But then, stupid youthful me, when I called him a "lunatic" it got him very mad. He ran right for me with a demented look on his face. I started running away as fast as I could and finally got right back to where we had met. Where there were street lights, too. There were some people all around now. I yelled "POLICE" and it got there attention. He just turned around and walked away like nothing had even happened. I went back to my apartment and didn't think that much about it except having avoided a street fight. That was in Milwaukee in 1981, maybe 1982... Well, years and years down the road when they had finally captured him I was now in Glendale, CA working graveyard shift as a desk clerk 3 nights a week. When I arrived to work that night they had the news on the tv in the lobby. He had suddenly appeared with detectives escorting him like he had escorted me in Milwaukee that one evening. I took one look at the face to see who this 'cannibal' was and almost passed out. My knees actually buckled because I had forgotten I even had knees at all. It was THAT GUY!!! Only then did I learn how lucky I had been. I'd swear in court with my left hand on a Holy Bible and my right hand raised that it was him, Jeffrey Dahmer, and this is all what had happened, too. GOD KNOWS... Crazy world out there people. I'd learn how to defend myself if I were you, or at least be concerned regarding strangers who act 'friendly, but a little bit weird'. Your 'spirit' and your 'intuition' are your best defenses in many 'questionable' situations though. Mine kept yelling "HARK!", but I had ignored it a few times only so that I could go smoke some pot and also get a stupid roach for pretty, little Beth to have as her gift later when she came back to pester me again. I'll tell ya, sometimes being 'in love' can get a guy killed.

Something interesting that gets mentioned in the book "The Shrine of Jeffrey Dahmer", regarding his fish tank: Jeffrey Dahmer was very fascinated by pufferfish as he maintained his aquarium, and he was also was hoping to make human zombies by injecting boiling water and acid in some of his victims' brains. Coincidentally, Haitian voodoo priests made a poison using toxins found in pufferish that causes paralysis and puts people in a zombie-like state. It's an interesting little observation, Dahmer probably did not know this about pufferfish.

Jeff was just sick. He should have gotten caught a long time when things were odd. I didn’t like the Netflix series. His father did not molest him I don’t believe one second his dad was when finding this out was shocked and trying to help his son. Yeah his mother had health issues but they didn’t expect him to come out the way he became to be Milwaukee Cannibalism. What I’m saying is Jeff isn’t the worst there are lot more people out there that are killers and that act smug about it. Jeff took responsibility for what he did and admitted it. Yeah if you don’t like what I have to say then don’t comment I’m giving my opinion. I have some what of remorse for Jeff and his family. And he didn’t deserve to be killed like that either no one does. I normally don’t have remorse for all of killers but him I do and I can’t help it but I do because he was sick man it’s sad he turned out that way. The worst thing of this case is the 14 year old boy and the police laughed about it so I blame them for not doing there jobs correctly when they had to know things weren’t right.

But don’t we all get a little curious with twisted stuff? Like why are we all here watching this evil shit. I don’t want to kill anyone, but the number of serial killers I can name alongside their crimes is weird. Like why do I find interest in it. Weren’t they the same? Difference they gave into the curiosity. I’m not even too sure what I’m saying tbh, but perhaps someone will get it and answer.

His mother was on all kinds of medication when he was born that was back at a time when doctors didn’t know to much how that would affect the fetus. His dad had certain genetics also that could have been passed down. Several factors how he was born and raised. That’s my guess hope it helps

@@arianna6682 but if that’s the case, why do we end up rating who the worst of the lot was? In as much as I’d like to keep my innocence and say, no it’s not that deep, when I think of it, it’s weird. I’m arguing with some other dude right now on another KZbin video of Ramirez about who’s worse between Gacy and Ed Gein. Obviously their incentives build for curiosity, but then we give these animals names like Milwaukee Cannibal, Killer Clown, Leatherface etc. It’s like their killings were achievements cause we tend to look for who killed the most. Who did the most wicked shit. It makes for a cool Hollywood storyline based on a true story, the next blockbuster. But little attention is paid to those who lost loved ones. Idk I just feel bad finding this interesting. I feel like we all have the potential to be like this, we just don’t give into our twisted thoughts, as his father said on the series indirectly.

@@Tiy51 I wanted to "quickly" make my point, so now I'll take the time to address yours. By been there, done that, living the legacy....I meant "our lives are the same" in that our destiny "remains" controlled by those believing they're superior. That....is my legacy. Whips, chains,segregation, institutional rape,etc., may be "modernized", but the effect remains. Finally, one doesn't have to experience the perils of space travel to comprehend how we got to the moon.

The comparison between Dahmer and Roots is actually quite valid and apt. I really believe that Dahmer was heavily influenced in the way he treated black people by the abhorrent history of slavery in his country.
