Hi Jeff, I was an auto technician for about 40 years but haven’t had much experience with small engines. I can really notice that you have years of experience with small engines and you do excellent work. You’re also a great teacher. I’m learning a lot from your channel, very interesting.

Thanks for posting. I have to work on a friends motor next week replacing the gasket. I have a very good idea what I am tackling since I do my own share of repairs but it's nice to get a little peak/insight on what I am about to do.
@robertg.99643 жыл бұрын
Well I was able to do this on the 18Hp. Except mine was not as smooth as your sump removal. My cam stayed stuck to the oil pump key and the whole shaft came out. Grrrrrr, So I had to pull the valve covers off, remove the push rods to the Valves, reinstall the cam shaft and aligning to the other drive pully shaft gear. Re-install my push rods, valve covers then proceed to install the new sump gasket and sump bottom. Zero issue with the Pulley shaft seal which is new. I have a fine like dental tool that allowed me to work between the the shaft and seal and prevent it from folding out word as the cover slide on. Thanks again, this video was a huge help!!

Great video thank you. I ordered the gasket and oil seal yesterday before I even seen this video and it's being shipped out today but your video definitely clarified a lot of stuff.. Great video, like all of yours that I’ve watched. Thanks! I had a serious oil leak on a mistreated B&S 12hp I/C. I think the engine may have overheated. Oil may not have been changed for decades, just topped up. Bought an upper bearing & oil seal, lower oil seal, full set of gaskets, & a oil slinger/governor (because I found it destroyed in the bottom of the case) I then, took apart the engine, replaced the upper bearing & oil seal (b/c there was excessive radial play), then started reassembiling the engine, but when I torqued the piston rod to 15ft-lb (185in-lb), it got very hard to turn the crankshaft! It was much easier when the cap bolts were finger-tight. I tried flipping the rod cap around, thinking the wear may have been uneven, but that didn’t help. I applied permatex assembly lube, which is very thick... could that be the cause? I could still turn it with my hand, but it was very difficult. Do I need a new crankshaft? New piston rod? Both? Can a machine shop fix this problem for me? Thanks for your help & for all the great videos.

great video, l have a 2017 Husq 42 with the same engine, a year ago, wouldnt start it was the pressure exhaust relief valve?, lowes where l bought it, sent it to their repair place in Raliegh, it came back and they sent it up saying it was leaking oil and then l got it back. didnt use it for 3 months it was end of the season. last summer using it it was leaking oil and was off warrenty, it was coming from the same place. the oil pan on the back side. thanks for the video, going to attempt this myself.

Great video...I have a issue I hope you can help me with. I have a Honda GX390 on a generator. I replaced the output shaft oil seal as it was leaking. I installed the new seal flush with the engine case. After running for awhile it started leaking again. I thought the seal needed to be counter sunk a bit so I replaced it again. And after running for a short time it has started leaking again. Im not sure where to go from here. Both times replacing the seal I used steelwool to clean the shaft and it seems smooth with no defects. Any advice would be great! Thanks in advance
@JeffsLittleEngineService2 жыл бұрын
Make sure the seal is not damaged(damage often occurs during install) and installed level (equal depth on all sides). it should seal anywhere on the shaft as far a depth goes as long as the shaft and seal are not damaged and installed level.

Degrease the area and tighten the bolts (if you can get to them) to see exactly where the leak is, if it still leaks. Remove the main pulley/clutch and the main seal can be changed in place.

@kdamore014 жыл бұрын
Been there, done that. However you will likely need to do a head gasket also. The root cause of the pan gasket blowout is back pressure from the head gasket being blown, so too much pressure sent into the crankcase. I'd do both because in a few weeks/months you'll be replacing the head gasket anyway

@JeffsLittleEngineService5 жыл бұрын
apx. 3 hours I would say
@tomscott11635 жыл бұрын
That's about the correct time it takes, The way to figure it correctly, " The price and time comes out to about 50Cents to 75 cents per minute to repair the motor it doesn't matter if it's out of the frame or in the frame. This is for labor time. Parts is extra. and that even is a variable depending on how hard it is to get the part. So an average carburetor cleaning and reconditioning well cost 45 minutes, or 75 cents per minute. plus parts.

@channell114 жыл бұрын
It could be a carburetor issue. By starting with the blades engaged you're putting a load on the engine-which causes the governor to demand more fuel from the engine to maintain speed with that load. Engines need more fuel to start when cold. Possible choke problem?

In "Hindsight?, It would have been better to use the change in your pocket as Shims to put UNDER your piece of steel then hammer away, SHOULD go EXACTLY the depth where the other seal WAS without going too deep. Just a thought.
@tazmun3 жыл бұрын
As to the question it’s hard to tell where it’s leaking? The obvious answer is a. take a pressure washer to it before you tear it apart! Then run the engine again and you’ve got a lot better chance of seeing where it’s coming from. A lot of very good mechanics believe in using a nice thin film of silicone to set main engine seal, plus you’d want to clean the seal surfaces on the seal and the oil pan very well before installing. I also disagree with your policy of not using any sort of gasket material or should I say gasket sealant or silicone and by this I mean very very thin film. This is just too problematic of an area. If the manual specifically says don’t use any sealant then I guess I’d fly that way but otherwise I would definitely add some thing. As I recall a lot of Briggs gaskets actually had little beads of gasket sealant on them that would expand to cover the entire gasket. A lot of people actually make that gasket out of silicone only for that matter. However you have to look out on the crankshaft for end play issues so maintaining the thickness of the gasket material is critical.
@pawpaw49115 жыл бұрын
Must be JUST me but " I " would have CLEANED everything before re-assembly of the WHOLE engine ( and would have used actual "Break-in lube on EVERYTHING) AND the chassis because IF we are going to go THIS far in a repair?, it would be MUCH better to NOT take a chance of ANY particles getting inside PLUS the WHOLE job LOOKS nicer when totally finished.
@JeffsLittleEngineService5 жыл бұрын
well those are good suggestions. However, assembly lube is only necessary if you are going to store the engine unused for a long time after you put it back together..
@channell114 жыл бұрын
Break-in lube seems unnecessary since this was only a gasket replacement and not an installation of new parts.

Briggs aren't commercial grade, but if you take care of them they'll run a long time.
