Thanks. Very helpful. Especially after I just spent an hour practicing various parts of Scarlet Begonias. I've been learning Dead songs to reverse engineer them, which hopefully will allow me to integrate what I already know - basic theory, modes, some arpeggios - as well as learn different techniques. I've found SB perfect for that, especially the Intro, Riff, and Outro, which I can play, but haven't examined closely yet, other than the riff. This idea looks like it will kick me up a notch. Thanks. Not sure if you're familiar with The Advancing Guitarist by Mick Goodrick. I just started using his idea of one string, one finger. So two days of 6th String, index finger. Because he wants you to start using only natural notes, it makes E Major or B Mixolydian unavailable. Yet I have the feeling it would be perfect for your Guide Tone idea. I've only used it for two days, and found it incredibly freeing. Because it limits you, it seems to allow you to take leaps, literally. He thinks patterns across the neck are crutches, that hide the lower level details. With your idea, your one finger would be leaping all over, hitting the various guide tones. With a backing track it would be even better. Obviously, he's trying to make guitarists rethink things, and he eventually adds fingers, other strings and the various positions and scales. He claims that even two or three weeks will change your playing. I'm going to try and merge your SB guide tones with his single string idea. The flat 7th A might be a problem, but I'll have to get that paper out and figure it out if there's a way around it. Thanks for a great idea at the perfect time.

This is amazing, thank you! Could Qs: 1. You hitting the guide tone when the chord switches, right? 2. When you're improvising to a backing track, you don't really know what chords are there, and when you do you don't always know when the change is coming. How do you battle that? Is this something that just comes with time, or something else?

When improvising to a backing track, first memorize the chords to the song, or write them down. Then play just the chords along to the backing track. Then try playing the chords in different voicings inversions or positions. Then try picking the chord tones/arpeggios along to the track. Repeat this until youre real comfortable hearing the chord changes and finding the arpeggios and chord tones to use in your soloing. Once you are comfortable with all the different arpeggios up the neck and the base scale of the song, these shapes will start to flow together and you’ll be flying all over the neck

Yeah, try hitting the chord tones as the chord change. And like Matthew said, figure out the chords to anything your playing with. Which reminds me, I gotta start making videos on learning things by ear! One of if not THE best thing you can do to improve. Over time you will start to hear things better and won't have to 'think' about things as much. Actually the exercise I go over in this other video I made has been the best for getting me to hear chord tones in a more intuitive way. - The BEST way to practice soloing with CHORD TONES is… kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y5STZaVrYpZ-jKc

Glad it's helpful. Yeah, I like making things like this a lot more than just breaking down a song. I've already got one for Bertha that I'll have up soon (with a new backing track).

Thanks for what you do bro, but that tone is horrible! Don't forget KZbin puts its compression and normalization on everything.. You cant really do accurate sound comparisons like on guitar tone, different strings, You know what I'm saying. Jerry didn't' use scales. He just used whatever notes fit in the particular smog. Every song had its own scale. You limit yourself if you try to adhere to standards, that is his magic. Triplets are crucial!
