My husband and I were married very young my husband worked two minimum wage jobs I stayed home with our little baby she was three months old when an elder came knocking. He had his twelve-year-old son with him and told my husband that he needed to quit his swing shift job that day and expected to see him at the meeting that very evening because he was missing too many meetings. My husband agreed politely with the Elder and said yes brother you are right I need to change my ways and prioritize what's most important. As soon as the Elder left my husband say did you see the suit on that twelve-year-old kid that's a full-on Tweed custom-made suit with leather patches (it was the 80s). I'm just trying to buy diapers and feed my family meanwhile this a****** is buying a 12 year-old $400 suits? Both the Elder and his wife worked full-time at IBM very lucrative company in the Silicon Valley back in the 80s they were both engineers and paid very well, livng very comfortably. Neither the elder or his wife were Pioneers because they were busy working making money while preaching to everybody else the evils of going to college. In the congregation we attended it was common for the elders to have an education and good jobs while the rank-and-file were mostly uneducated and poor. Needless to say we never attended another meeting again we were marked as inactive eventually confronted by our families I told them we didn't believe we thought it was a cult my husband backed me up we were both labeled apostate and have been fully shunned for more than 30 years now. 40 years later still happily married, we have five grown children and 10 grandchildren. We made sure the kids received a full on education all now have families living happy fulfilling professional lives and grandchildren on track to do the very same thing. I'm very grateful for that eventful day because at least in one case the elders b******* backfired on them. 🙂

I can remember people going to the elders to inform them that they would miss the next meeting because their mother was sick and they are going to visit her in the hospital. Some elders would say that attending the meeting was more important. I would miss a meeting and the elder would say, you missed the last meeting. I would say you are right and I would just walk away.

Who God loves takes them from the grips of Jehovah witnessnesses teachings. I was once a Jehovah witness. I quit because my job makes me not to attend meetings and field service regularly. When I'm able to go to the kingdom hall I'm received with coldness and shunning. I had 5 children to care for and my mum. I was told to go and arrange my job times with my employer. I couldn't do it because it was impossible. In the end I choose to work and care for my family as instructed by the bible, the hand that does not work must not eat. I'm glad God helped me to make that decision. I would have been a pauper. Most of Jehovah's witnesses in Europe are on state benefits that they have disabilities to enable them to go round preaching from door to door. Why can't the Watchtower Organisation pay for the time used in preaching? In other denominations the priests are paid. I pray in my room and God helps me. After all I'm made in God's image and I can think for myself with God's grace and favour.

They do give subtle message or sometimes overt messages that would make you think getting education is bad… I never paid any attention to that. My whole family has degrees. I have a brother that’s currently an elder and has a bachelor’s and masters degree. I mean what are they going to do?? That’s not a DF matter. I was disfellowshipped around 21. It literally took until about 72 hours ago ( I’m 43 now) before I could even admit that it was a cult without feeling bad. I have come to the conclusion I was never as good a JW as I thought I was. I didn't go running to the elders seeking their "direction" on every little aspect of my life. The very few times I did, I went to an elder that was personally dear to me; which was more important to me than him being an elder. I grew up in the truth, my mom has been in the truth for close to 40 years. Im 39 now, if I was to send my mom some of ur videos, she wouldn't speak to me 4 months. I feel everything you all have been saying. As a child, depression, being an outcast in the real world. Attempts of suicide as a child. The militant mindset weekly. Giving talks every 2 weeks. 3 days a week studying material, school work, sports, etc. Never got baptized, if disfellowship I knew she would cut ties with her only child. The religion is deep, after attending college i would have to say that the organization was prepping me to be a public speaker and was the best teachings I have yet and still encountered. I use to always question in the bible and the publications, where are the people my color? Y do they not acknowledge us at all? A lot of questions in which i was told to simply not question god period, it was looked at as a sin. Most importantly, as a teenager going into the real world after high school, it makes it very difficult to maintain and sustain in the real world. Its like a handicap for a kid, on top of that u can't even celebrate your day of birth. I still get butterflies in my stomach when i look at ur videos. Great content, much appreciated.

So I spend most of my free time on KZbin watching videos like this and commenting to get some contact with people like me. I need to find an atheist group around here or something. Cause I need help and just want someone to talk to about what I’ve been through who knows what it’s like. Seems like there are thousands of people like this but none by me. This is of course one of the hardest things about leaving the cult is losing your social network but I’m sure it will be worth it in the end.

@@ExJWCriticalThinker my first comment got deleted somehow. My waking up process has been going well. I was born and raised in the truth. I left in my teens and then came back in my late twenties and was babtized within a year. But I always struggled and had doubts. Especially with prayer. It’s always felt silly to me to pray cause I was never sure someone was on the receiving end of that prayer. I wanted answers and wasn’t getting them from the watchtower publications so I took to KZbin and boom there was an overflowing pool of valuable information. At first I was sad I cried a lot. Then I got angry for many reasons involving my family. Now I’m just hapoy the chains are mostly gone. Most of my family on my dads side are witnesses. My dad was never babtized and always struggled with it so I was able to wake him up fairly easily. And for that I’m so happy. I have some members of the family I know they never will wake up. But I have a cousin who’s always been on the fence. Always had one foot in the Kingdom Hall and one foot out in the world. She kinda lives a double life according to what witnesses would probably say about her. I decided to talk to her and was shocked at how much conditioning she still had. She is convinced Jehovah is real because he’s answered her prayers and is convinced Satan is real cause my family loved to use him to scare us as kids to be good. But oddly enough she said she didn’t believe there would be a paradise on earth and she said she doesn’t believe we will see our grandmother again who died recently who was a firm believer. She kind of picks and chooses what she wants to believe and has no knowledge of science. I gave her as much info as I could without overwhelming her and she said she would think about it. But also told me to be careful cause Satan puts lies out all over the internet to bait witnesses. So I’m at a loss on how to further her journey with waking up since the doubts are there and have been there.

I can relate to your experience similar background. I still believe in Jehovah God the creator however I don't believe in the JW organisation. Trying to recruit people by waking them up is a futile effort. How deep someone has been conditioned is a factor. My main goals now is to keep my own relationship with my God stronger. I suggest you do same. All you'll need is a community of like-minded ones. And we are many only if you search for us.

I could never understand why Pavlov's discovery was so mind-blowing. Conditioning seems so obvious to me; when I even walk to the cabinet where I keep the pet food, the cat comes right away to look at what I am doing. The dog is attentive as soon as I open the refrigerator! People are conditioned just as easily. I feel mad at myself for letting the Jehovah's Witness nincompoops perform conditioning on me. Forget the governing body, it was the local "elders", who were nothing more that uneducated factory workers, window cleaners and even pedophiles, who barked orders and I jumped. Unbelievable.

It took 4 or 5 years for anxiety attacks on weekends and days off to end after I stopped. "It's not a lie if you believe it," - George Costanza in "Seinfeld" episode. There was a great Question from the Readers back in the 1980s dealing with "3 levels of understanding"- 1)things clearly stated in the Scriptures, 2)things that can be reasoned out (like Michael = Jesus), and 3) things subject to change. Contextual reading and study and that Question from the Readers broke mindsets. Back in the '60s the main subjects were "Armageddon" and "fornication". In the '70s these were changed to "Great Tribulation" and "loose conduct" to be changed to "Peace and Security" and "uncleanness".

Another excellent video. I can remember this conditioning well after I moved to northern Idaho years ago. In the winters it would snow a lot and would get really cold as well. The congregation would never cancel the meeting even if it was dropping snow fast and furious. They said that they would always have to cancel. Then when you stayed home they would start to criticize you for it using guilt. They were hard core up there, if you dare go to work but not come to the meeting then you were looked at as a murderer it seemed.

I would argue that the Watchtower has a higher status than the Bible. You know how many times I'd be discussing a topic with fellow J-Dubs when eventually one would say, "yeah, but what does the Watchtower say?" Not, "what does the Bible say?" It was always what the Magazines said. And if there was a conflict between the Bible and a WT Magazine, the WT would always come on top.

So a guy and a lady mistakenly but consensually have fun. Still, he now has to rat himself to an elder. Next all the elders in the Hall will know the graphic details (undergarment worn, sex acts performed, etc) and write it up for Watchtower. He is punished (Disfellowshipped or something lighter.) He is not counseled or encouraged; elders only care about Watchtower’s image. The person is roasted every which way except by name on the platform. Anyone with a keen eye can figure out what happened. Others are told to avoid him as spiritually weak. We were conditioned to think this is healthy, normal and right. Watchtower basically teaches it members to rat themselves out to possibly lose their family and friends and for nothing valuable in return.

Because of that article that spoke on a brother giving up his God given birth right to choose or not to choose to wear a beard I left. What a stumbling block for both the man and the woman when choosing a mate...A brother giving up his propriety to wear a beard was restricting his personality to that of another man. I questioned this article and got a number of cherry picked scriptures that didn't make any sense. That was my wake up call...I began to notice how brainwashed the congregation and myself were. It was time for a change....I decided to leave. I am glad I did. My eyes have opened to so many new understandings. I no longer feel like I am in a box. I am free. Yes, free to be me. I do not engage in so call "worldly behaviors"...I am learning new things that help me to become a well rounded person, especially, in my dealings with others.
