All the music that the Bethal brothers threw out that day in 1983, would now be considered wholesome and acceptable music today.

sorry I dont agree, although the organization's songbook music has changed bad influence is still bad influence; earth wind and fire or heavy d still would be considered questionable lyrics...and what I threw out myself in 1984 such as the stones and queen would still be looked down on as satanic music

One of my favorite "WTF?!" moments was reading the article about music in the November 8, 1977 Awake! magazine where it says: "If an innocent social gathering deteriorates into a sexual orgy, it may well be that it was not just the alcohol but also *the music played* that contributed to it." I was like "Damn! Where were these social gathering taking place? And most importantly, why wasn't I invited?"

Growing up I listened to A LOT of Earth Wind and Fire because they were my Mom’s favorite group. When I got older I use to DJ at Witness gatherings, parties, weddings, etc. I remember at one gathering when I was a Ministerial Servant I played a Michael Jackson song (Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough) and then right after an Earth Wind and Fire song (Getaway). The older witnesses there almost died from embarrassment 😂... best believe i got a tap on the shoulder and some “counsel” after that.

I remember one of my cousins ( a fake JW, cherry picked what she did and didn't want to do) told me that Earth Wind and Fire worshipped the devil. She went on to say that a few witnesses went to their concert and towards the middle, the lead singer stopped the show and said they were about to pay hommage to satan and all Christians need to leave especially JW's......I was a kid back then so I believed it and for years I thought it was horrible to listen to their music....To this day that cousin is one of the biggest liars, gossiping and thieving people I know.....Haven't talked to her in 10 yrs...so far so good on not ever having anything to do with her......

I remember in the '90s when a watchtower article bashed even socially positive rap music like what Public Enemy did condemning racism and police brutality as Watchtower focused on the cusswords and seeming "rebelliousness" or "disrespect for authority" as justification for their warped condemnation. Some of us threw out our entire music collections thanks to Watchtower's fake authoritarian nonsense.

OMG. My ex told me about a prank at the Canadian Bethel in the late 70s. A brother was in the johnny-on-the-spot and another brother got the crane and hoisted the toilet up into the air and kept it suspended. The brother opened the door and almost fell out. He could have broken a leg if he had fallen. Stupid pranks. Also, there's a scripture where God tells Israelites not to put on the garments of the opposite sex. Yet at Canada Bethel, they had a party and a few brothers dressed up as women and did a song and dance routine. Gross.

My mother and grandmother made made me participate, so I sang Isobel by Björk... it's pretty tame. But they had a problem because she's weird. Lol But while we were eating, they had music on, and I think it was someone's playlist --- H Town ( Knocking the boots) Clarence Carter ( Stroking ) and R Kelly ( Ignition ) and some other raunchy blues music. Cause they have created a dependency that is so strong the JW fills the wt mailbag system with questions like this w96 9/1 p. 21 Living by the Law of the Christ *** At times, some write to the Watch Tower Society asking for rulings on such matters as what view they should have of specific films, books, and even toys ################### They have created mentally handicapped adults

JT, you’re gonna love this story . My family went to Bethel and we saw a Bethel boy who was like a brother to us three girls . He smiled and said hello and we ran up to him and gave him a kiss like we always did. He was praying under his breath that we wouldn’t do that cause there was some important elders with him. We didn’t know.

When you started talking about music, you gave me a good chuckle. I remember that issue in the magazine. Now, at the time I was a club DJ. Everyone in my family knew that my record collection is my pride & joy! Till this day my mom & brother will tell you this. I wish the society would tell me to get rid of my music & see my hard earned cash go to waste? I think not. Shucks, they may have had to put me out. I played Donna Summer - Love To Love You, Babe. Any album by Richard Pryor or Wildman Steve. Prince before he became a JW. Same with Larry Graham when he played with Sly & The Family Stone, then with his own group Graham Central Station. I still have all my vinyl and such. The society is full of the brown stuff & I’m not talking about gravy either! Love you guys for all you do!

Big Edit: I initially wrote my response as I was doing my strength training for the day. As I am now working from home for an indefinite amount of time, I listen to videos, namely my favorite EXJW videos as I do my strength and weight training. Today was different. After I finished I had to come back and edit my response because your video hit me like a ton of bricks. One of my earliest videos I did was entitled, "My top ten regrets being a Jehovah Witness" and my number one regret was when I was an early teenager and along with my brother David and cousin JoAnn destroyed my grandparents record collection based on a talk we had heard that Sunday. I remember the look of shock and sadness in my Grandmother's face and even now so many years later, it causes me to feel sadness on so many levels. My grandparents are both deceased now, but my grandmother suffered from Alzheimer's/dementia for so many years and the one thing that gave her pleasure and made her smile was MUSIC. She loved James Brown and Etta James, Earth, Wind and Fire, Temptations, Stylistics, Rick James even. When we broke those records we were following what the Watchtower, Tract, and Bible Society were telling us to do...but listening to your video gives a historical perspective I would have never known and it was during that time period that we did it. Thank you for sharing this story, it does help. I always enjoy these videos. I hope you are safe and sound during this time.

Thriller was off-limits in my house but MJ was so big that he wasn’t all the way “banned”. My mother grew up during MJ’s beginnings didn’t become a JW until 1996 so I had the chance to listen to his music for years, thank goodness. My mother ALWAYS made it clear, however, that MJ was a JW. She’d never let me forget that. 😂

catina claytor I don’t know if MJ was disfellowshipped. To me, his father kept him and the other brothers busy so where was the time to study and get dunked? I know there was a constant clash of whether it was okay or not to listen to Michael Jackson. Now looking back, it’s so stupid to worry about whether or not it’s okay to listen to someone just because they make a choice about whether or not they want to be religious.

This video brings back a lot of memories, I used to hang out with a group of brothers that the rules didn’t apply to. We’d go to someone’s house to watch whatever sports game was on at the time and then we would just start drinking nonstop and take a break for a meal and then start drinking again. There was never any music played for fear that our wives might want to join us 🤣, I got rid of a lot of my music but since then I’ve slowly started to rebuild my library. JT, when you mentioned Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin, my wife looks at me and says: What’s wrong with Led Zeppelin?😭 Good times tho…👍

That was condemned as "rap" music.

Funny that you told the story about what Franz wrongly said about the serpent not actually speaking, but using body language because daily text for Sat. is: "You certainly will not die.-Gen. 3:4." Also, the daily text for Thu. said: " As stated at 2 Corinthians 3:17, “where the spirit of Jehovah is, there is freedom.” ". There was no freedom to choose your music at Bethel. WT likes to control as much of your life as possible. Dress, grooming (no beards), taste in music, etc.. Now we have real freedom because we are free from the heavy burden that Watchtower put on us, especially the burden of endless meetings, field service, cleaning the Kingdom Hall, attending assemblies, etc.. We are free from the chains of slavery as we are no longer slaves to a man made religious CULT.

Jazz certainly is a good choice, kudos to you! ;) But if you want to listen to music that really encompasses joy of life, the best I know is 30's-40's swing music (obviously, that would not have been an acceptable choice of music for a variety of reasons ;) If you listen to Fats Waller's "If You're a Viper", or Ella Fitzgerald's "Wacky Dust", it is also quite obvious that things have not changed so much in the past 100 years ... so there is enough room for doubt that this is the last part of the last days of the last days ;) ) But I digress... Thanks for sharing your stories, I really appreciate the work you do!

I recall reading a “questions from readers” article around 2010/2011 about reggae music. The article tried to insinuate that reggae music was racist against whites and JWs and witnesses should not listen to it. I asked my dad about the article and was upset as I loved reggae music! I could tell the article was a knee jerk reaction most likely from a older white brother who didn’t understand reggae music and was entirely opinion based. How dare they put their opinion which was entirely wrong. Reggae music was simply a description of events those people went through (slavery, colonization) and those reggae artists had every right to discuss those events and how it affected them (“ie chase those crazy bald heads - Bob Marley”) The society is out of control.

The Society decried popular music back in the 1940s. The Rock music of the 1960s was based on Blues and Country from the 1930s and '40s. Heavy Metal is Classically influenced. The first description of Rap was after the Civil War, Black and white churches "lined out" the hymns. Talking Blues was recorded in the 1920s. Talking a verse of a song was common in the 1940s. The Society had and has no musical and social understanding and no scope of history (the practice is to selectively comb through history for the best effect). Thus the ignorant enforce and perpetuate ignorance......

I went to Walmart and bought a GQ magazine for a cocktail recipe I saw in there, which is considered pornography in Bethel but I didn't know at the time, and threw it somewhere in my stack of magazines. While I was at work I got a call to go meet my home overseer because of that magazine. There's no way in hell a housekeeper would've seen that magazine unless she was searching thru my stuff. I sent this note to Goatl Like Personality. It's the beginning of a series of very short posts to help all XJWs become qualified in changing the ancient timeline so that 455 BCE becomes the true date for the return from Babylon. Per the Bible, 455 BCE must date the 1st of Cyrus and the return for many reasons now, but it's a big topic. So hope you don't mind my sharing this. Once 455 BCE becomes the true date for the return from Babylon and 537 BCE is a revised date, 1914 is history. If current JWs know that 537 BCE is a wrong date, they will know Jehovah isn't telling the Governing Body a damn thing! Eventually, the WTS will have to admit to the changes. But it's an involved toopic. but every XJW needs to know this. Here's the post and have a wonderful day!!

Mic drop! I was so upset because I knew the sisters house I was over had “questionable movies” I had been over her house many times and I knew he was taking a dig at her - while sitting there eating her food!!!! She was an excellent cook - she was from Jamaica and I always enjoyed her cooking. What an ass! Truly a cult!
