Building Large Battery Systems using a DC PowerStrip

The output connector in the end is drawing all the power from one direction while the other output is drawing the power from both sides as you have two batteries connected to the right on the first power strip. With an output being in the middle the PCB tracks only have to provide half the current from each side whereas the output in the end will draw all the current from one side. Having an output connector in the middle also allows for heat dissipation to both sides of the PCB and in total I believe that is why you saw the different temperatures.

This is perfect if you want to slowly expand your battery banks over several months. Build a small battery, start using it. Build more small batteries as you can afford the components. Plug in each new battery as soon as you finish building it.

Love your battery system ... Are you using standard 1 ounce copper in the PCBs? Or opted for 2 ounce because of the higher currents?

I love this idea, but I would be more interested in a higher gauge wire for the output. You'd want to then have a "mother" DC powerstrip to connect the larger strips and go to 4/0 to feed into solar inverters.

Maybe I am going to sound crazy but it is the direction I have thought to go in, I have only just found your site and its sparked ideas... Im looking for something like this, but works like the backplane of a hard drive nas unit that instead of hard drives I would be able to slot in/out long slim (eg. ebike batteries that already have a BMS) batteries. Does that make sense? Like a NAS with Hard Drives, but instead a box where you can insert, swap out, hot swap other battery packs. DO you have something like this please?

Hey Jehu, could you show details and explain, what adaptor you used at your power supply, which one do you use and recommend for a 7S pack (may be meanwell?) and how you connect your DROK Hallsensor measurement? I'm building up a smaller pack with MH1 batteries but need a 230V AC-DC power supply which handles more than 20A charge current. I use a BMS with RS232 output. I need a inspiration for how to connect all stuff nice :) It also will be nice, if you can suggest stuff, which i can buy outside of america, shipping and customs to germany are currently bad. That's why i want to buy your strips for sure, but last time I had to pay >100 € to customs for an 300€ order. May be, you can sell cour Kicad/Eagle files for self production?

Can you test that exact system using Anderson Power Pole? I think you might have better connector performance using that connector. Yes XT60 is what is used on most packs, but I think you are getting a lot of resistance with these connectors which is causing them to heat up.

Hello Jehu, I have a 12V SLA UPS (with a dead battery) and I was wondering if it would be possible to replace it with an 18650 battery pack with a BMS. I understand that SLA charging has specific characteristics that may not be desirable or appropriate for lithium-ion cells but would it be safe to assume that the 18650 BMS would filter the unwanted characteristics so that there would be no issues with the operation of the UPS?

A 4s LiFePo4 battery pack will have similar voltage requirements to the 12V SLA. Use a BMS on the 4S battery. Note that LiFePO4 batteries are different than the typical 18650 Li Ion batteries. They have a 3.2V nominal voltage, 3.6 max charge voltage. For example A123 or Headway.

How evenly does it load those batteries? I'd expect from the design that the higher the load the higher the percentage will be drawn from the packs nearest to the output connector.

Hey there. Please consider a video on a 6S 40p or higher 300A bms. I looked at the supplier you link to but they don't have 6S. They did email me back that they could custom make a 7S into a 6S I am using tesla S packs and your 40 cell packs for 6S 24v inverters and don't have a high amp BMS solution

It seems to me it would be a good idea for you to sell the scooter battery packs populated with batteries that have already been tested rather than a DIY'r having to purchase all the testing equipment if they're only going to build a battery pack once. Being able to purchase known good, tested batteries would be much more economical for the typical DIY'r that just wants to build a powerwall or 2 for their own use. Also some kind of board that uses compression springs and fits on top and below those scooter battery packs using the screws to hold them together and maybe some kind of stiffening backing plate so you can get enough compression would be a really good idea to make it way easier to build ready to go battery packs

There are electric safety rules to size your wires according to current, so they don’t heat up and burn. #10 wire will only support 30A.

Bought 18 scooter batteries l want to do a 48v powerwall. Probably get another 10 batteries but have no idea how to configure. Just heard ya say l could connect 14 to make 48v so lm thinking putting them in parallel 🤔

It looks like your using the BMS that came with the scooter packs? but the big powerwall they are all hooked together with one BMS, is that correct and if so what is the best why? I have 10 and have already pulled off the BMS and was going to hook them all together with one tiny BMS s516, any thoughts? Thanks

Using the original bms is best as is less work, but I still don’t have the controllers to share with everyone

I like Anderson Powerpole connectors better. They are genderless. For applications up to about 45A and 10AWG. Once you figure out how to get the orientation right they are a breeze to install - no soldering.

All your DIY stuff is trial and error work. You can't figure out why you have issues, but an engineer could spot it immediately. 60C = 140F, which is too hot to touch. That's dangerous.
