Hey, Andrew. I'm an airline pilot and I would like to tell you what I know so far. I do not fly the Boeing 737 but here is what I know. The bird strike was on the right engine. Based on the video, there were no flaps (which reduce approach and landing speed) and ground spoilers (which help increase drag and reduce lift after the plane touches down). All of those things including landing gear, flaps, spoilers are controlled by the hydraulic systems which could have failed from the bird strike. I would assume they probably ran all of the checklists which would have told them to do a manual gear extension. I'm not sure how a bird strike could have caused the landing gear, flaps and ground spoilers to fail. If you have any questions, feel free to ask.

A Taiwanese pilot who has 7000 hours of flying Boeing 737 analyzed: This plane couldn’t be failed by bird strikes. The main problems are the pilot may forget ( or have difficulty to use) the manual landing gear and the runway distance is too short. This was the second time landing. The plane failed landing the first time possibly caused by bird strikes. Then the plane made an U turn switching to another runway on opposite direction which the runway distance is shorter than first runway. He couldn’t figure out why the plane didn’t change to another airport not far away from this airport which has longer runway.
@SkyForgeVideos17 күн бұрын
Complete amateur opinion: This wasn't just a bird strike. Also it looks like they attempted to land without gear, with fuel onboard, on a short runway. Not sure why the pilots felt this was the best course of action. The plane exploded when it hit the embankment. It hit with too much speed and force. Really unfortunate and tragic for everyone involved. My condolences to the friends and families.
@halodriver136217 күн бұрын
Yeah, it appears that there are manual gears that could have been deployed (old school 737). So the bird strike may have cause the mayday and the second attempt, I do not think it prevented anyone from deploying the leading flaps, tailing flaps, and/or landing gears. Apparently, as this thread is alluding to, they landed very much "into" the runway already with not much more distance left, at a very high speed. And from reading the comments here, this backup/ 2nd attempt runway was short. It's all very tragic. I'm pretty emotionally invested into what comes out of this. Much love from the us.
@hotmoon295917 күн бұрын
@@halodriver1362 Amateur to everything of airplane. I just try to translate the Taiwanese pilot’s analysis as accurate as possible. He introduced: That airport is small. Runway 19 is 2500m (8200 feet )long. The length is ok for normal landing of Boeing 737 but not enough for a belly landing Boeing 737. Choosing belly landing in a small airport only under utmost emergency situation such as the plane is on fire . But didn’t observe there was a fire in cockpit. He mentioned Boeing Landing gear release handle is very difficult and inconvenient to operate. He doubts even the decision of go around maybe a wrong decision. He wouldn’t try to go around if the engine has problems or on fire under low altitude . Too Low Gear warning, fire warning etc., too many warning sounds in cockpit may distract the pilot. His other questions: Why the controller didn’t observe the problem of landing gear? Did the controller see the engine was on fire? Why the controller didn’t contact the fire department after The pilot called Mayday . Why the pilot rushed to make a decision of belly landing on a small airport? R.I.P. My deepest condolences to the family members.

That crushable tile at the end of a runway sounds like a take on the runaway truck ramps you see on steep hills along many highways in the US. Same principle as those ramps are made with loose gravel that a tractor trailer with no brakes sinks into, stopping a speeding truck. Lots of videos showing those in action. They're expensive to build and it's not cheap to pull a truck out but theyve saved many lives. When youre talking a plane full of people, I've got to think the expense on both ends would be worth it!

The two main issues aside from everything leading up to this situation: - Plane " floated" over the runway far too long and didn't actually touch down until nearly 2/3rds of the length, leaving far too little room to safely slow down. The runway was more than long enough. - A fucking brick wall at the end of the runway where ILS localisers are generally built on open frams for exactly the reasone we saw here...

One thing you have to remember for all large modern airplanes are the redundancy the manufacturer place on the plane to make it as safe as possible. Even if the plane lost power, there are backup power for essential instruments. The lost of all hydraulic is near impossible these days due to cutoff value to prevent lost of hydraulic fluid. There might be a lost of some of the control surfaces but pilots are trained for these type of issues. As for the gears, they are gravity dropped once the landing gear panels is unlocked so hydraulic is not needed for the gears to be deployed. There is more to this than just bird strikes and the weather. My guess is pilot or computer error. Edit: I might also add that soft concrete were create to be place at the end of the runway to stop a runaway plane but they are not deployed in most airports due to cost. If this was included on this runway, it would have stopped the plane before hitting the reinforced concrete wall and antenna.

The woman next to me was a nervous wreck and lit up a cigarette during takeoff. The flight attendant kept yelling at me to put my cigarette out. As soon as I could I got up and moved. Pretty stressful. I did have a Valium before takeoff.

The crash is heartbreaking!! I don't know if the pilot landed long or too fast or the speed at the end of the runway was just the way it is when landing on the belly, but in any case those passengers should have been able to walk away from the landing, if the airport had a proper runway overrun!! The closeup of the fence looked to be 1 or 2 feet thick with rebar.

They should have had calculations on a checklist for belly landing and runway needed. That plane was going really fast to me. I realize that landing gear would have slowed it but it seems like landing should have been at stall speed with full flaps
@paulwilson798918 күн бұрын
My understanding is that they couldn't lower the flaps along with the gear. They had to land at a higher speed than normal as a result.
@bobbysenterprises322018 күн бұрын
@paulwilson7989 the flaps were down earlier before the attempted landing but apparently not when they were actually landing. They have three hydrologic systems that can work the gear and a manual way to put it down. I can't imagine they went through the check in the 7 minutes between the strike and craft. Although that side engine damage can send smoke into the cockpit. But it still does not seem to make sense. Of course having a structure like that with no runoff or sand like pit at the end of the runway doesn't either.

@@bobbysenterprises3220 - Yeah, I have seen a lot of that same information in the last few hours. One of the best explanation by a Korean poster: "As a Korean, I would like to elaborate on worst things that dems in Korea have been doing that possibly lead to the martial law so far. (current parliament out of 300 seats, 180 seat is taken by dems which means they have 100% control over almost everything) 1) Refuse to update the law against spy: government wanted to update the law against spy to not only cover N.korea but also other countries with prime example being China as they could be working together. Dems have repeately refused to update this law. 2) Update the most absurd government budget every known: They reduced the budget of president's office, prosecution office and police office down by 100%, literally 0$. I'll explain the reasoning behind this on my next point. Not only that, They reduced budget placed for safety of ppl and wellbeing by substantial amount. 3) Most impeachments ever in the history of this country: You have to know abt Jae-myeong Lee (the leader of Dem party). He has been under numerous investigations for many years now. The list is very long but the most important ones are violations of election law, connection with gangsters, perjury, corruption and Remittance to North Korea. President Yoon really wanted to give him justice so he put lots of effort into Lee's investigation. Dems have Initiated impeachment proceedings against 22 government officials, and after they won the 180 seats in the parliament, they forcefully impeached 10 more ppl. The list included more than 7 inspectors, Minister of Public Administration and Security, Chairman of the Korea Communications Commission, Auditor General and Minister of Defense. Just to run down the country and protect Lee to make him the next president. 4) Connection with North Korea: Members of dem and MANY of labour party including higher ups (they are basically a team here in Korea) were actively caught spying for North Korea. Some of them actually got caught meeting North Korean party members secretly overseas. 5) Refuse to pass any law and objects literally anything that would benefit the country just for the sake of putting down Yoon's rating I understand Left and Right have different roles and idealogy but one thing that must be common is for the benefit of the country and the people. What dems in Korea have been doing is to literally run down the country just so that ppl would hate Yoon, thus win the next election or impeach him to gain power again." S. Korea being close to China and with a pro-US stance it's a good place to practice for China. What's happening in South Korea may eventually happen in the US. And actually it did happen in the US 2020 election. Election to favor Beijing Biden like it did with former president Moon Jae-in who is a China shill. Culprit in both cases? Communist China!

The problem is the US is that almost nothing technically counts as corruption except for the most heinous, obvious kinds and then whenever we try to limit corruption everyone thinks we're talking on freedoms and rights even though we specifically have laws that limit freedoms and rights because without those limits dodgy, criminal activity explodes. We have limits on campaign financing, even though it reduces freedoms and rights, because without those limits everyone engages in awful behaviors. If you want power you should have to give up some of your rights to serve the people, like giving up some privacy rights by publishing your tax returns or something along those lines. I know, I know... It's not so simple and gets complicated real fast. Also, I don't give two toots between the cheeks about what the founding fathers thought it what their intentions were. I do care about any good ideas they have as how those good ideas apply to day. We didn't have to accept a crappy system, we can improve it.

Yeah, i dont trust flight accident statistics. Such statistics arent made to make me feel safer but to make me more likely to buy tickets + all the costs that are included in that journey such as hotels, food etc.. The statistics i have seen so far are all measured by hours or miles flown and then they compare that to car accidents. Thing is...there are way more cars on the streets and therefore many more drivers because cars drive on flat terrain and dont fly under or over other cars which means there is way more "direct" contact or interaction with other drivers then pilots have to deal with. I feel like they should compare these statistics by how many drivers/pilots are in the area of the journey and also based on the same pilots. If i drive then there is a constant and that is me as a driver which i dont think is considered in flight statistics which distorts said statistics but sadly i couldnt find statistics that give me such numbers
