"you don't have layer modes irl" i wouldn't think about it that way, digital art is just different and cool in its own way and you have to use it in the way you want, don't think about other mediums cause every is different (i suck at most of them, including digital) you have pencil you can think just about eraser and pencil, when you have watercolors you use water which makes it all different, you can have markers which you have just them and blender and you go with it, you have digital and sooooo many different stuff you can do with it you have to find your way experiment with it and just try it all out, i am not the best in it in any possible way but im gonna do the same thing and you are basically doing the same thing with every medium just experiment and use all the benefits the medium gives you that you want ;) cool video as always btw i loved it :3 good to know how these layer modes work

I really agree with you. To me, digital art is "real life" as well, just another medium with it's own quirks. I think the jist of "you don't have layer modes in real life, so it's good to not rely on them too much" reworded is more so, don't blindly rely on layer modes, but understand what color theory is going on behind them.

I use overlay to help make the character fit the background more. If the background is mostly blue, for example, I'll put a blue (sometimes purple) overlay on the character.

I really liked this video. I usually use traditional mediums in my art, so using digital programs is frustrating because I KNOW how to get the pretty light effects on paper but on digital art it just kind goes *merp* and turns into a blob. This helped me understand the actual program I'm using and what all of these extra terminology means.

You have no idea how badly this was needed. I watch all these “beginner” tutorials and they tell me to multiply layer but not WHY or what it does! I need to understand why I’m doing it so when I’m doing my own art I can get the effects I want. Why was this so hard to find?!? I’ve been a traditional artist for YEARS… I’m 36, and now trying to move to digital has been the hardest thing I’ve done in art ever. Ever. I think I was just too set in my ways of doing things. I have a great understanding of lighting, anatomy, proportions and rendering….. it’s the digital tools and what I have to work with, what they do and why and when I’d want to use them. Thank you this was hugely helpful

Binary colour changes the colours to one of the binary colours that a computer uses. I believe that it is a filter that allows you to preview what your artwork would look like if saved as 16 colour bitmap (I think that's the right file type...) Soo many colours in the one sentence...
@NoName-ld7gg

Another pro tip: If you want colored line art, just put alpha lock on your line art layer. (Alpha lock basically means that you can only color what's on that layer, obviously, alpha lock only works if you're on the layer you want to be colored. Therefore, if you go over your line art with the color you want it, then you'll have perfectly colored line art. Clipping can also be used for this trick as well, and clipping is actually more so recommended than alpha lock because clipping is on an entirely different layer, so if you messed up on a part of the coloring, then you can erase that color easily without affecting the line art, but alpha lock is on the same layer, so if you tried erasing a bit of the coloring then you'd be erasing the line art as well).

I guess I need a sort of "why" video? I've never understood "why" these modes exsist when I can do the exact same thing with differemt brushes and opacity. Is it kinda just a more adjustable shortcut?

Yeah it's just an easier way to do things so you don't have to get the effects by hand.
@udithkumarv734

The difference is more like using a stone instead of a hammer to put a nail into a piece of wood. So the 'why' is actually, why would you use a stone when you have a hammer?

A common use is for coloring. A lot of professional digital artists work in b&w and then add color after, using layer modes. This let's you perfect shading and textures and then worry about color at the end, it's much faster and more efficient to work that way for many people. Another use is getting effects that might take waaaay too long if you did it by eye, as an example; if I wanted a nice night time scene, I could hand pick a pallet that matches and fits my color scheme and then try to tweak them to get a night time effect and go by eye for each individual color like.. "Well if his coat is red, in shade on a moonlit night, it should be more purple ish.. but the street lamps are orange... so..." OR I could do the piece as if it had neutral lighting and then add a blue or other color filter using the right layer mode and make it look night time very easily! Certain modes can do exactly what you want. Since shadows are affected differently than bright spots at night, you might use a mode that applies the blue color only to the shaded parts and not the bright spots. This way is much faster and easier if you understand the layer modes as well as color theory. There are many more examples you can find, and I'm still learning myself. I'd just say go play with them. Draw and neutral scene and try to use just modes and adjustments to get different meanings or feelings. Make it feel like a love scene, or a horror scene, or make it night, or feel like they're in the matrix. It's a good learning experiment for layer modes. Hope this helps!

Sorry I know this is an older post but it's so helpful. A thing I have personally noticed and been meaning to mess around with, is this saturated colour that often forms when your lighting layer (what I use is called soft light in Artrage 5) hits, or in my case, goes over the multiply layer. Ive seen in nature that this tends to happen and I always wondered how to replicate it or how and why it happens but, there it is!

If you have paint tool Sai 1, you have free access to 2. To actually get the program you need the certificate that they email the details for. If you take the email details and make a new certificate, you can add in the paint tool Sai 2 code in instead of 1. Soz this is really complicated to type out but if you have paint tool Sai 1 I'd recommend researching to get 2

Hey to everyone who is looking for the answers in the replies. I'll tell yall. I strongly prefer Paint tool Sai 2 to 1. Paint tool Sai 2 can recover art that wasn't saved. So if your pc turns off, you can get the art back exactly where you left it. 2 also has more layer types and brushes. It also has an option to draw perfect shapes such as circles and squares. Meh thx for reading (If you already have paint tool Sai 1, you can get 2 for free :3)
