Jellyfin media server in an lx zone on OmniOS

After frustration with Plex media server I switched to Jellyfin, here is a demo of the setup in an LX branded zone on OmniOS.

It would be very nice to see a walkthrough on your homelab to have a look on what can be achieved/do differently/do better on these lesser known OSs like OmniOS. KZbin is full with Proxmox, Truenas and Docker labs.

I know what you mean with annoyances with docker and other container technologies. Working now with docker and kubernetes at my primary job the simplicity of deploying software yourself is fun and more sane. I'm always fascinated seeing you use more "niche" OS, i tend to just use proxmox and do most of my stuff in LXC Containers and some stuff in VMs. Maybe when i migrate to a new server i'll use my current one to play around with omniOS myself. What would be interesting is to know if you can pass hardware devices into LX Zones like we do in proxmox to have hardware decoding in jellyfin, under proxmox with an intel igpu we normally pass /dev/dri/card0 and /dev/dri/render128 to the jellyfin container so it can utilize the hardware decoder since i don't want to tank my performance on other services like my nextcloud when somebody in my household is streaming again.

It is possible to pass devices to zones, I have not tried any with an LX Zone other than storage, I will do some experimenting. You should absolutely try out one of the Illumos distributions, they are incredibly powerful and feature rich.

Question: What prompts one to use an lx zone over a bhyve zone? I've been browsing the OmniOs mailing list and other places, the soft consensus seems to be bhyve is the way to go over lx, but I'm not entirely convinced.

It depends on what you want to do, the linux equivalent for zones would be docker and kvm for bhyve. I tend to use zones as much as possible as they are lower overhead and the filesystem is well integrated. Only when I need to run something that is neither illumos nor linux will I pull out bhyve, e.g. FreeBSD for my firewall

Thanks for that video :) I followed your instruction using same debian image and share read-only folder with zone as you did. But I have issue, probably you could explain me what is wrong with in my case. Generally in zone I have read-only directory /romedia (Debian-exim:daemon) which is attached to zone. I can browser this dir from console, Jellyfin also can see it but don't see the content for some reason... I can copy files from /romedia to new directory - /music and jellyfin can see content. Maybe the issue is with owner:group, but you change nothing and it worked for you so I am confused... Maybe you have some hint?

I don't know how and why but it started to work : )
