Reminds me of the day they cast (Black Brit) John Boyega in Disney Star Wars. It was such a huge milestone that all black people came out in the streets chanting "At last! Everything is going to go our way now! This is what we always needed!" The belief in the condescention and infantilization going on - against all demographics - in the USA is beyond a pathos.

Fun fact: of Iowa's starters, 2 are of mixed race (Hannah Stuelke and Gabby Marshall). Although I like that they are keeping the "Race War" theme on a humorous level, I have mixed feelings about even focusing on it to begin with... Frankly, the players don't give a damn...

As you said, "We should be better than that." Athletes -- black, brown, white, yellow -- are busting their asses to be at the pinnacle of their sport. It takes more than being simply "gifted" to be an elite in a sport. We should appreciate these athletes for what they've done. Those who look at everything through the lens of color are the actual racists. "... the content of their character, not the color of their skin."

I love sh!t talking during games, but I don't like celebrations directed at the losing team. I'm literally trying to teach sportsmanship at my school in P.E. and recess, and AR/LSU reinforce the exact things we're trying to get rid of with our kids: holding up the L at the losing team, the "too small" taunt (which only criticizes the way someone was born), and running over to the team you beat, not to shake hands, but to do your celebration. I don't watch a lot of sports, but that behavior is rare, for me. On the other hand, there is soooo much racism, hypocrisy, and sexism in comments as well, from those not interested in being specific; going after grades, using racialized/racist language, etc. I never comment on this because it's so toxic, but I really don't think this is comparable the way people keep talking about this. Whether it's male players or rappers putting out dis tracks. It is, however, ridiculous that women aren't supposed to do these kinds of things. At the same time, there are people who go to women's spaces (sports/music) perhaps to escape the toxic environments on display in men's sports and music.

@@destinypirate Who is this "they" you speak of? You can't honestly believe there isn't a race narrative can you? The LSU player said as much the other day. You know damn well the media in all formats thrives off of race related content so for you to say there isn't that component hovering over this game and the two high profile players in particular isn't based in reality. There shouldn't be that component but plenty of people in the country will make it so whether it's there or not.

UNLV-Duke comparison makes less sense considering the South Carolina women have been the best team. LSU win last year was like Duke over Wisconsin after Wisconsin beat the undefeated Kentucky in the 2015 semifinal. LSU had very little chance to beat South Carolina in final if Iowa would not have pulled upset. South Carolina women are more like Georgetown men and UNLV men in the 80's and 90's. LSU women have never been the best team in their conference.

I like the trash talk, but there are times when it crosses the line of sportsmanship. For example, waving goodbye to an opponent who fouls out isn't good sportsmanship. Angel got the better of CC last year and did the ring gesture. While it's not a championship game, it will be interesting to see what CC does if she wins this match-up.

Ppl keep saying what Angel Reese does is just trash talkin'... NOT IT'S NOT. What she does is taunting ppl... Trash talking is one player talking shit to another player, while the game is going on... What Reese did that made ppl hate her is she FOLLOWED Clark off the court to do the "u can't see me" and the ring thing... That wasn't trash talking... That was taunting... She followed her off the court to try to get a reaction out of her... That's different than telling somebody "u can't guard me" or hitting the "she's too little" WHILE THE GAME IS GOING ON... What Reese did was try to taunt Clark for losing... Nobody likes taunting... And that's why nobody that isn't LSU likes Angel Reese... Jemele & Roy ain't speaking for me... bc I hope to God, LSU loses tonite... Then Iowa can lose in the next round against JuJu Watkins.

Thank you. Through all of this noise we can hardly talk about a topic - such as even a healthy debate on where we draw the lines of sportsmanship. In my memory, no one - ever - ran to taunt a losing (great) player right as they were winning the championship. . . Beyond this, mostly we are seeing a ton of envy and greed be triggered by Clark's success (we saw that with Tiger, McGregor, Jordan). I wrote a sharp criticism of this in my first level comment. Iowans support positive people, all over. May the best team win and all the best to all of the girls on both teams!

I want LSU to win, so the ratings will hit the floor for the rest of the tournament and prove that it's nothing but haters talking down Clark. Racist and heterophobic haters.

Don't worry, as it is going - narcissists extraorinaires Staley and Mulkey will be sure to crush their players and NCAA ball under their egos with snipes and fights and media posing that will reveal itself as more toxic to fans than even CC's inspirational run. Ratings will plummet faster than Apollo reintered the atmosphere.

@destinypirate I think you are right. Though what I find disturbing is that so much investment that the ordinary citizen never signed up for has gone into female athletics, and finally, there is some interest in women's basketball that can be classified as a phenomenon and their jealousy is standing in way of building a long lasting fan base. Women's athletics fail because they don't capture the imagination of women. Men like me don't enjoy watching a slow Princeton Cut to the basket and they make as many of those baskets as they miss. Clark makes it entertaining because she understands the game at the level of Steph Curry. She is must see and part of her appeal and keeping it real is why she is hated, as I pointed out above. I don't mind if women complain about pay if they are producing real revenue. These women have been bleeding the NBA dry since the 1990s. Not 1 season of the WNBA has been profitable, yet many of these women get paid more than doctors while complaining about pay and saying that increasing pay is the key to getting better ratings and more attendance at games. Completely illogical.

@@shonehi546tim9 This is a start at looking under the hood... There is a reason they're called The 7 Deadly Sins. We have 3 here: Envy, Greed, & Pride. Clark is what they have praye for, but now that is here - they embarrassingly fall to the female stereotype of tearing another woman down. There is nothing to not like about Clark, good citizen on and off the court, and that only makes them more bitter. - So they then have to manufacture a ''race'' narrative for her popularity, and a racism accusation when someone doesn't like poor sportsmanship. They have the blueprint, give the league 20 women striving for Clark like quality, and it will be a league of stars we will watch (if they play with sportsmanship). However, it is more likely they will tear her down in service of their narcissm. (I wrote even more critically on this in my first level comment).

People don’t always have to say the words ‘I was wrong,’ reading between the lines you know she is acknowledging it was not the blockbuster story mulkey suggested it was. So remember, the coach is the one who brought it up and made it seem like it was going to be huge, probably purposely to cut the legs off it and raise expectations

She wasn't wrong. She never said the story was going to be a bombshell. In fact, her words: "This could be anything from Kim Mulkey cut someone off in traffic or massive NCAA violations to toxic culture. I have no idea, but I know that I'm interested now." It was Mulkey talking about defamation and hit pieces like the story was gonna be some big, biased takedown and it turned out to be a nothing-burger. If anyone should be admitting they were wrong today, it's Mulkey. Or she can keep us updated on that lawsuit. lol

The Washington Post article by Ken Babb was very thoughtful, well-researched, and illuminating. Jamelle wasn't wrong. Mulkey and her players later called out a different L.A. Times article that used the obnoxious "dirty debutantes" moniker for LSU. This article reportedly played into stupid stereotypes about Black and women athletes. Mulkey seems justified in calling out the LA Times piece.
