1982, the first trip I remember on the flying Maharaja Air India Boeing 747 from JFK to Mumbai, via Heathrow. The jet was named Ashoka, as in the legendary Mauryan Emperor. I still am in awe when the queen (oops king) of the skies takes off. I still wish to fly on the Boeing 747s. Will see.

This was not a shortened runway. You can clearly see that the Air India 747-400 uses the displaced threshold (1:43) for a longer takeoff run, granted it is not the whole of the displaced threshold available but that is only another 100-200 metres. So not a short runway.Also runway 27 is just over 12,000 feet long and one of the longest in India.A fully loaded 747-400 needs 9,700 ft for take off at sea level, this will be longer if the temperature is greater than 25c. So this is not a shortened runway takeoff , but a normal one.

Wow, normally a plane of this size, would require more runway for takeoff. This 747, only needed a short amount of runway for takeoff. If you had ever flown, even a small civilian aircraft, you would realize that to take off in a 747/400 Heavy (loaded with passengers) on the limited runway length that the pilot had was a feat that would likely not have been attempted by a Captain with lesser confidence in his own flying abilities or the flight capabilities of his aircraft. That's SOP for John Wayne Airport in Orange County, CA. USA due to the proximity of all the expensive housing in the area. They hop out at full military power, takeoff at maximum climb then they level off to 80 percent power and continue their climb at a shallower climb rate. Sort of scares you when you first experience it as the reduction in power and climb rate gives you a sense of stalling.

I ordered a pizza from Dominos the other night and it was delivered an hour late and virtually cold by an Indian on a motor scooter. This pizza was prepared and cooked by Indians.
