I usually agree with Cenk's takes, but he's at least a little off here. So I don't particularly know Psaki's punditry, and I know that MSNBC predominantly shills for the establishment left, but misinformation has become a huge problem in news media. Both the right and the left do it, but the right does it much more (anyone who doesn't believe this can look up news organizations on MediaBiasFactCheck), and there are currently few laws in place to do much about it. This has real world consequences, even for most conservatives. E.g. The vast majority of professionals with economics expertise -- including conservatives -- who've compared Trump and Kamala's fiscal proposals have made out Trump's to be worse. This includes, ironically, that Trump's tariff proposals would increase inflation, an issue that's been cited as one of the top concerns by most voters.

Censorship can't be the solution to this problem, better positioning of fact based information and refuting the lies has to be the way. But, disinformation is a major societal problem however, as it makes folks a lot easier to manipulate. When you get a large group of people to believe that people are "eating the cats and dogs" you can do a lot with them after warping their world view. It's human nature for feelings to largely be based on the information perceived and for actions to be taken after that, if the input is mostly absurd you get some crazy results.

IF there were events naturally unfolding that leaned into the desired narrative factually, those could have been highlighted directly. It's only when those things are missing, and you want to create a distortion that the false information is needed. If there were issues due to sudden population growth, those things could have been discussed hand in hand with the positives of population growth. Especially for an economy like that of Springfield that was previously ravaged by deindustrialization and population loss.
