I'm a razor smith. I've used balsa wood secured to wood paddles with industrial diamond(which you can get down to .1 micron. I apply the diamond with an emulsion of isopropyl alcohol in a cheap spray bottle. The entire kit of 10 grits costs about the price of one of these and mine are 20" long and 3" wide by 1/2 thick. They are cheap and easy to clean and replace. The balsa is porous enough to be a great substrate for diamond powder and provide less "give" than cloth, so the diamond cuts very efficiently and don't roll the edge. Give it a try and avoid the gimmicky stuff with "nano" in the name. :) And no, I don't sell them. But 5 minutes on cramzon or alishuxpress and you're in business.

Sorry for the late reply on this. but yea. i kinda keep falling back to a few leather ones ive made years ago. I have a few balsa ones, but i really get my best edges on an old leather strop with some green luxxor on it. Ironically it was the first combination of compound and medium i tried. And after years of testing everything from jeans to diamonds, its the stuff i always return to :) thanks for the comment, would love to have a look at your razors man, look me up on facebook and send me a link or a few pictures if you want.

@@lofotenknifeworks2278 I agree, leather should always be the finish. I'm a fan of horse butt. Thought, similar to you, I have a English bridal and rough leather paddle that is my go to for the last 20 laps. Will send you a link on facebook in a bit. Have a great day!

Yes indeed … what I see here is $400+ for some foam pads and sprays. I’ll stick to balsa myself.

It takes a bit getting used to, but I do a progression from 4 mikron to 1 mikron and then finishing off at 0.025 mikron. But it's very different from a leather strop. Got their kangaroo leather strop as well, but that's usually only used for maintenance. Great video as usual, buddy. Keep them coming.

I wish you world use thinner paper, like telephone book paper for the cut test. The paper you're using is so thick, a half way decently sharp knife will slice through. You can "hear" how thick the paper is.

Hi. First and foremost, thanks for the comment. The paper is from a newspaper, so its actually quite thin. But i dont pay to much attention to "if" it cuts, but more "how" it cuts, and sounds. The reason i sounds the way it does is that the diamond abrasive is so aggressive that im actually removing and creating a small burr on the other side on this soft steel. Thats also why im not that impressed with the results (im not shure if that comes through in the vid). That being said i have had much better luck with theese strops on harder steel after making this video :) Have a great day Tama Toa and a Marry christmas (if you celebrate christmas) :D

I probably said it on other videos but I found out that roughly 1000 grit then light strop is the best :) I also use a standard leather , I like the concept of the long thin wood strop

Thanks. I tried a few different, and i find them easier to work with. I would still go for a more traditional strop with a wider surface for single-bevel knives though i think. But i guess i have to test that out as well. Im looking into different knives to include in my videos moving forward. Debas, yanagibas etc :) Thanks again for commenting and interacting :D

I thought the .025 & nanocloth wouldn't do anything, but it rounded an edge I just spend a ton of time creating. I used a ton of pressure in a kme so it was my fault. I'm going to get a few and see how they go now I've sold the kme and have a ton more experience.

Great video man. What would you recomend to get? My highest stone is 5000 atm and im look for something better to strop then newspaper. I dont mind getting a second one later to make it even finer but i need a stepping stone. Wpuld love to hear from you. P.s. do you still use any of them?

To be honest newspaper and or cardboard is brilliant. you can load stopping paste on them and you are good. But.. for your home kitchen a nice leather strop will sort you out! I picked up one here in the UK from ebay and its got both rough and smooth leather sides and it was £8.. 1000g, 5000 then strop! and then strop before use every time and you will be very happy! if you want ot get all fancy you can get a stropping paste. but if you do then you will want a strop for each compound used.

I could tell the quality of the edge from the sound of the test cut in your video. The knife that went through the whole progression made the least amount of sound during the test cuts.

its an interresting concept, but i really need to work on them a bit more i think. I still get better results on leather, but it might just be my technique.

@@lofotenknifeworks2278 yeah diamonds are no joke .. I use way way less than they recommend.. like 80% less lol.. I use a quarter micron for my razors if I haven’t got time to go touch up on stones.. even with the small amount I use I’m only doing a few passes.

The total cost of your jende strop system is at least $500.00 That doesn't seem pricey. It is! There are other systems that don't come from Taiwan, and are less than $50 The system uses a multi micron paste that deburrs and polishes extremely well, all on one paste.
@lofotenknifeworks2278
@lofotenknifeworks2278 2 жыл бұрын
Offcourse there are other alternatives as well. And the ONLY reason i have so many was for testing purposes. You will only need one strop for finishing, and including the diamond paste you are looking at around 78$ :) Id love to hear more about other systems as well if you have good experiences with them :)

@@lofotenknifeworks2278 This nano cloth is not new tech. There are literally hundreds of these types for polshing. Do you know why this is being used or presented to the public. I don't see a virtual miricle to finish knives as it can view the method or result. The primary reason to have nano cloth for polishing is supposedly for a very small compression of the cloth when stropping with the cloth. From what I see on all video close up of the cloth, the Jende product does not seem to have a shallow depth layer to it's dimension. Translating , to possible radious of the edge. Take a measurement of the thickness and , oh will probably find that this nano cloth is over 1.5 mm at best. Kangaroo skin is better to sharpen with because it has a thickness on average of 1.1mm.

I guess you could call that diamond emulsion “Jenda fluid”
@georgeyoung4292

The problem was very soft steel, thats why the results wasnt impresive.. Diamond is way too agresive for it and soft steel is always a bitch to deburr.. Try on aogami #2 or ZDP-189🙏 It will be much better but in all honesty the kitchen knife dont need such fine edge and i personally prefer the aggression frash from the stone..

I have to agree. I just had some very hard steel in for å little touchup. And the strops alone did a fine job with this :)

Just to test basically. It seems the diamond strops are very agressive on "softer" steels so in theory one should be able to make larger jumps in grit. I have, after making this video had ha chance to test these strops on some really hard steels with alot better results than what is shown here :)
