Hapstone has NEVER ever MADE AND CAN NOT MAKE the BODY(!) for a sharpening stone BECAUSE THEY DO NOT HAVE THE EQUIPMENT FOR THIS! All they do is buy sharpening stones somewhere, stick them on aluminum and put their trademark, but they are not located in Poltava (!) and HAVE NO RELATION TO THE PRODUCTION OF THE BODY OF GRINDING WHETS !!!

Pdt makes some great stones! I’ve had a set of the metallic bonded cbn ones for almost a year now and I can say they are excellent. However, those new venev archer metallic bonded diamond ones from gritomatic have been my favorite recently for normal sharpenings. (I don’t really chase mirrors much anymore) 😂

I ended up getting the complete 11 $tone $et of these PDT plate$. Huge investment. I really like them. The 15,000 PDT will leave scratches over the Edge Pro 4k stones. Poltava uses the Gost rating system so be aware. Lifetime stones. Very fast cutters. I use Ferric Chloride to refresh them. Do not use SIC powder on these stones per Poltava. Not great for a mirror polish. Use resin stones for that. Cheers. Great informative video Jerad. Bang!

To me at least, it seems that Venev stone still far and away the best option for most people. For $55 (and even for $75 which is what I got them at) you're getting 2 stones that will basically last forever or damn near close to it while getting some of if not the best edges possible. Like that's half the price for VERY similar performance. Maybe I'm missing something but that's just how I'm seeing it.

Dude your Hapstone Premium stones still have the gray factory resin on them. That's why they aren't cutting. If you lap them with silicon carbide powder they will cut just as fast as PDT Resin and Metallic bonded CBN stones. I can literally guarantee it. The Hapstone Premium are also a hybrid organic resin and metallic bond mix. They are not pure metallic bond. All that said, the PDT Resin Bonded CBN are by far my favorite stones of all time. So I agreed wholeheartedly with you and ones tried all the others you mentioned as well. Great video thanks!

They're nice but they're pricey. I can't justify buying a set when i have a complete set of Venevs (theyre ok) and Edge Pro diamond matrix (which are my favorite). If you're a professional sharpen (or have more money than you know what to do with) i can see justifying buying them. For me, what i have is fine. Been using a 800 grit boron nitride stone (its like a mix of a waterstone and ceramic) and irs awesome. Cuts fast, and with either 6 or 3 micron strop (i use 3M micropore medical tape or balsa) gives a great toothy and sharp edge.

I average about 25 knives a week, mostly kitchen from a variety of manufs. I have been using Atoma plates on a K03. I buy the 8x3 replacement plates, cut them on a bandsaw and finish the edges for application to my 1x6 aluminum plates. Saves a lot of $ this way, but I do still replace them quite often, especially the 600. I don't often find a need to chase a mirror and I have always seen it as subjective anyway, so the 4 grits Atoma produces along with stropping with Gunny 1um is satisfactory. Now you have me wondering if the metallic bonded cbn might be more cost-effective by cutting profiling time and the longevity of the stones. Your thoughts, or anyone else?
@Riyame
@Riyame 4 ай бұрын
The metal bonded CBN will last SIGNIFICANTLY longer. Likely thousands of knives very easily (for even the low grit stones). That being said, you might want to keep a single very low grit Atoma plate around for when you have a serious profiling job to do as they will cut much faster than the CBN stones.

I am pretty SURE - 100% sure that PDTools is located in Poltava city, Ukraine - it is a factory that has been established and operating since 1966! And Hapstone company is located in Sumy city, Ukraine - it is an assembly shop in a garage, where guys glue the body of sharpening stone from PDTools onto a 3mm aluminum plate and sell them as factory-made - they are scammers! Because it's not "not fair play", since 2024, PDTools has stopped selling ONLY the body of the sharpening stone, and now the factory sells only BRANDED SHARPENING CBN-stones GLUED TO 4MM (!) ALUMINUM, so that Hapstone does not use the word of "POLTAVA" for its advertising purposes!

Guys, in order to make YOUR OWN ABRASIVE YOU NEED MILLIONS OF INVESTMENTS in dollars, and 20-30 practical activities at LEAST! What are you talking about, don't make me laugh, Hapstone WILL NEVER make their own abrasive, because these are not workers and engineers - these are young businessmen who have learned to promote their goods on Internet platforms! Polishes the same as the Veneve. Not as pretty a color I guess. simple light cream brown rather the the redish 3000 veneve. if that matters at all. Much thicker bond by double at least. Oop's, my mystique. only 2mm. I was thinking of themetalix bonded which is 3.50 mm. I understand them make two different thicknesses just as Veneve does. KnifeMaker

@@NeevesKnives I just got my Hapstone CBN stones in. It seems they are made differently than the PDT stones. The gray layer on the Hapstones appears to be some kind of release agent, likely graphite or molybdenum. I cleaned it partially off of a single stone so far with alcohol, wanted to get some pictures with the digital microscope before going farther. Having it on the top of the stone means that both sides of the stone were likely molded so the top of the stone is completely flat and any CBN will be pushed in so they will need to be lapped, some fairly heavily to expose a decent layer of abrasives. That is why they don't seem to be cutting at all. My stones feel very smooth, the 400 and up are nearly glass like, with only the occasional abrasive particle able to be felt in the 150 and below This did not need to be done with my PDT stone. Not sure if they do that in the factory, or if they are just not molded on both sides resulting in one side being usable out of the box. Just thought you might want an update and my thoughts on it.

I just bought a whole set of the PDT Metal Bonded DIamond Stones. I'm sorry, but Diamond cuts better than CBN. And with the Metal Bonded stones, the CBN only comes in 1.5mm layer thickness. While if you buy the METAL BONDED DIAMOND stones, you get 3mm thick layer of diamonds. So use your best judgment to decided which will last longer. (HINT, CBN stones do not last 2x as long as Diamond, which means you get MORE life out of the METAL BONDED DIAMOND stones. However, either way, at the end of the shitty day, BOTH metal bonded stone types will LAST 5 years or LONGER even if you sharping 3 - 5 knives PER week.

cbn does last longer than diamond i would have to take what the companies testing shows as i have not done that test, however i have tested diamond plate next to cbn and the cbn last quite a bit longer, if one is more aggressive than another that has to do with the company and the size and amount of abrasive they put in, cbn is more aggressive in that case, diamond is also more aggressive in the same case

@ryanlowery9081 the company has decades of experience and confidently reports that their testing shows their CBN stones cut faster than their diamond ones. They claim up to 1.5-2x faster, they seem to have top quality products, and at the very least appear to know what they’re talking about. I’m curious what, in your experience, would make the diamond stones faster? Did you notice a significant difference, or did diamond just slightly edge out CBN in your tests? I’ve never used any of Poltava’s stones (although I’ve been interested in trying them out for a while), but I’m still surprised that user-experience could be so far off from what the company reports

In any sharpening stone, the strongest side is the bond (glue) that holds the CBN-stones and keep it durably inside the sharpening stone. Spyderco is good at making knives, but he will never learn how to make a bunch - this should be done by specialists! Such as PDTools (Ukraine), which have been doing this since 1966 in USSR. During this time, they have so many secrets of making bonds (a lot of different glues) that Spyderco will NEVER catch up with them, so let Spyderco better make knives 😂
