This was James Cameron's "Look what I can do" movie. It took all the skills he'd learned working as an art director for Roger Corman's cheapie genre movies... Cameron is an artist, matte painter, writer, model builder, director, cinematographer... the only thing he cant do on a film set is act. This movie looks like it cost 5 times more than it did. The sequel is Cameron with the world's biggest (for its time) budget... so it's a fun way to contrast what the same filmmaker can do with next to nothing vs hundreds of millions of dollars.

Fun fact: Lance Hendrickson (cop in this movie, Bishop in Aliens) was Cameron's pick to be the Terminator (see Near Dark to find out how that might have worked). Cameron was forced to see Arnold by a producer.. he reluctantly went... had no intention of hiring him.. but his angular face, his imposing figure and the fact that he brought up Yul Brenner's performance as the killer robot in the 70s Westworld film convinced Cameron to hire him.. James Cameron was directing a movie called Piranha 2: The Spawning, had to fly out to Rome to work on it and it left him broke cause it was a cheap movie. Because he had no money, he had to live on leftover food in the hotel he was staying at which led to him getting food poisoning and being sick in bed. While sleeping, he had a nightmare about a metal endoskeleton coming at him out of an explosion with kitchen knives. When he woke up, he had the idea for the Terminator.

This and T2 were formative to my childhood. I remember going as the T-100 for Halloween like three years in a row when I was a kid, and I wanted to be literally just like Arnold when I grew up.
@kevinburton39482 жыл бұрын
Oh yeeeeahhh! This is the film that truly put Arnold on the map! He was built for this role! But the trivia is that James Cameron originally wanted him to play the hero Kyle Reese. Arnold talked him out of it that he was "meant" to play the Terminator. I first watched The Terminator on video back in 1985 when I was just 15 years old. Loved and I mean *LOVED* it! That year I went as The Terminator for Halloween complete with the leather jacket, a red glowing eyepiece and torn facial skin makeup with metal pieces that I did myself with Silly Putty... My Mother *hated* it. LOL! I actually got to meet Michael Biehn at Fan Expo in Toronto in 2011 and I was dressed as Future Resistance Soldier Kyle Reese (yes cosplay is "still" my thing). Micheal Biehn said that his two favourite roles were Johnny Ringo (from "Tombstone") and Kyle Reese. He said he loved this role because Kyle Reese gets to tell the audience what's going on in the film through the dialogue. Oh and seeing your jaw drop at "naked Arnold" right from the start was worth watching this reaction alone! 😄 Can't wait to watch your T2 reaction- it's one of the best sequels of all time! Loved this one!

The funny thing is, Arnold didn´t even want to play the Terminator at the beginning. He wanted to be a hero, not a villain and had his eye on playing Kyle Reese. Thank God that didn´t happen :D

There are two great deleted scenes for this movie. one is outside the motel where Reese starts to have a breakdown, unable to process seeing the pre-war world. The other is at the very end as they send Sarah off in the ambulance, they reveal that the factory is the same company that created Skynet, making it a huge chicken & the egg situation.

My favorite line in this movie is when Kyle Reese says to Sarah "It can't be bargained with, or reasoned with. It does not feel pitty, or remorse, or fear. And it absolutely will not stop, EVER... until you are dead!" I also often find myself saying "what the hell!" like the garbage truck driver when Arnold first shows up, and "did you just see a real bright light" like the homeless man when Kyle shows up. :D

Linda Hamilton in T2 took Sigourney Weavers first female real action role in Alien 1979 and took it a new level for all women and girls, she trained for months for this role, workouts, fight skills, determined that woman would be seen as future action movie stars and in life! Damn Goddess! 😳❤️🙏👍😎

Jen, in 1991 , James Cameron was going to make a live action Spiderman movie with Charlie Sheen as Peter Parker and the girl from the movie , Teen Witch , as MJ , but he couldn't get the shot he wanted of Spidey swinging through the streets, using cgi, so he could only get a liquid cgi character made, so he made the Abyss and Terminator 2 instead, Ahnold was going to be Doc Ock in the movie too

Jen, it's interesting that you said you would not think the terminator was dead until you saw its red eyes go out. According to commentary, the scene wasn't filmed at first but some of the crew felt they needed to show its eyes go dark to show that the terminator really was dead so they scrambled to shoot a very quick close up scene with crumpled aluminum foil standing in as part of the terminator's skull and a crew member blowing his cigarette smoke for effect.

O.J. Simpson was originally considered for the role of the Terminator, but it was intimately decided that "no one would believe he could be a such cold-blooded killer."
