@TheManFromUNCLEIllya Жыл бұрын
@@haissem8 that’s not correct. Sorry. Why Die Hard is considered a Christmas film whereas your offerings do not is because of numerous reasons. And not just because it is set at that time of the year. Reasons such as the plot requires it to be Christmas for the party to be happening, for John Maclean to be over to see his wife and children, for the lack of police on the street leading to the office bound cop having to respond to the call among the main points. If it wasn’t for being set at Christmas all the variables wouldn’t have come together. The party wouldn’t be happening and John Maclean wouldn’t be there for starters.
@Githerax Жыл бұрын
@@TheManFromUNCLEIllya Incorrect. It doesn't require the party to be happening; it requires the money to be in the vault which was the whole point. It doesn't require a lack of police; in fact, Gruber's plan requires the police to arrive in order for the power to get cut and open the vault. You could just as well say "it's a limo movie; he's picked up by a limo, a limo hits the getaway ambulance; and they drive away in a limo." You see, what you are doing is falling into the logical fallacy 'correlation proves causation'. A Christmas party is taking place and is stopped because a robbery is happening, but instead of seeing that it is a robbery movie, you think it's a christmas movie. It's the same logical trap that evolutionists fall into; 'these animals look similar to each other therefore they're related'.

@ALavaPenguin10 ай бұрын
The only way this is not a Christmas movie you would have to disqualify it for reasons that would also disqualify tons of movies that are not even debated and well considered by virtually everyone to be Christmas movies as well. If you use equal weights and measures, it is a Christmas movie or we have to redefine most of the Christmas movie canon, although given that most Christmas movies have nothing to do with Christmas [The birth of Jesus Christ] maybe that would be a wise thing to do. But, under the current standard of what makes a Christmas movie, it has to be or almost none are.

Yes, Hans Gruber is indeed played by the late, lamented Alan Rickman. One of the most distinct voices and versatile actors in the world. He's played heroes, villains, and morally gray characters alike. He is and shall be missed. That exploded like that because that was a pretty big brick of C4, he put several detonator caps into it, and CRTs in general and those old phospher PC monitors in particular retain a sizable electric charge; if you've ever seen anyone work on classic Macs with a screen inside, you've seen them carefully discharge the CRT before taking it out; so he used the residual charge of the monitor that was active until just then set of the detonators in the C4. "Bad guy from the Goonies" Yeah, Robert Davi; he was also the main villain in License to Kill. Al is played by Reginald val Johnson, who's better known as Carl Winslow from Family Matters. Also the smarmy TV reporter also played Walter Peck, the EPA douch from Ghostbusters.

@@jenmurrayxo Also: about bringing an estranged family together. Her name is Holly. I mean, it's not a *traditional* Christmas movie, but saying it's not a Christmas movie is like saying "Grosse Pointe Blank" or "Mr Right" isn't a RomCom; it's a Christmas movie. In a similar vein - "Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang" is another Christmas/action movie; I'd *highly* recommend it. It's skews much funnier. It's not a big movie, unfortunately, so if you're looking to go for a much more well-known classic movie to grow your channel, it's not that. But it's very funny, very fun, and I'm confident you'll enjoy it. It stars Robert Downey Jr and a few others you may recognize. (Also, it may not grow your channel like a Game of Thrones or MCU react, but nobody else is doing KKBB - as far as I know - so maybe it'd help more than I think; everybody who likes it would be a lot more likely to find your channel since nobody else is doing it.)

A couple of bits of trivia. The first one's cute. The second is a cool historical reference. When 'Die Hard' first came out, one reviewer described Reginald VelJohnson's character Al Powell as "Teddy-bear-like." I loved that because his is so lovable. According the official lore of the British Army's 57th Regiment of Foot, use of the term "die hard" to denote someone who, against all reason, refuses to give up originated in 1811 at the Battle of Albuera. The 57th was in imminent danger of being overrun by the French, and their Col. William Inglis was seriously wounded by grapeshot in the chest. Inglis refused to be evacuated from the battlefield and remained with his men, determined to hold to the last. As the 57th fought desperately to hold against the enemy, Inglis scouted to his men "Die hard, 57th, die hard!" Despite heavy losses, they managed to hold their ground until the British were finally able to send reinforcements and drive the French away. Afterwards, the french commander, Marshal Soult, complained "You cannot defeat such troops. I had penetrated their center. I had turned their flank. They were beaten. The day was mine. But they did not know how to run away!" and the 57th have been nicknamed "The Die Hards" ever since. There's evidence that the term "die hard" actually predates that battle, but it remains an extremely motivating and inspiring story, and the courage of 57th on that day was for real.

A naive KZbin viewer is about to enter the Die Hard Zone.;) Get into Argyle's limousine for a ride to the Nakatomi Plaza building and the Christmas Party From Hell. It's an interesting "Christmas Cake" recipe: Take one "TV guy," add a stage actor, fold in a script worthy of Action movies of the time, bake in an improvised oven over flaming C4, and garnish with 9mm bullets. "Detective John McClane" is iconic because: He isn't a "Rambo clone," takes damage, has moments of fear/humor/introspection, has a working class background, and is "falling down tired" by the last quarter of the movie. So, "It isn't Christmas until 'Hans Gruber' falls off the Nakatomi Plaza building.";) Finally, a song that (sorta) fits the movie: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rYqrnZh8e82ffM0

Great reactions, Jen! And yes, it's a Christmas movie. My only problem with the movie is when Karl "wakes up" on the stretcher at the end. 1) He lost his rifle when John and Karl are fighting hand-to-hand, and 2) EMTs WOULD NOT place a weapon on the stretcher with the passenger. But it serves the purpose in the movie to allow Al to finally be able to draw his gun again. I think are five movies in the franchise. But beginning with "Die Hard With a Vengence", John starts becoming a "superhero" / "superman" kind of protagonist. In the first two, he's an everyman who has been put in extraordinary circumstances. Don't get me wrong, the second (another Christmas movie) and third (a summer movie) are good movies. But from then on, watching the rest of the franchise is kind of iffy. I've only watched the fourth and fifth installments only once each, if that means anything. Just as an FYI, John McTiernan also directed 1987's Arnold Schwarzenegger film, "Predator", and 1990's Alec Baldwin / Sean Connery film, "The Hunt For Red October".

Sad to hear but it was announced a couple weeks ago that Bruce Willis was diagnosed with aphasia. Which apparently he's had for a little while now. His family has announced that because of this he is retiring from acting. This is really sad news. He is a great actor and I love his movies! For those that don't know, aphasia is a disorder that affects the ability to understand language and communicate... "Aphasia is a disorder that results from damage to portions of the brain that are responsible for language. For most people, these areas are on the left side of the brain. Aphasia usually occurs suddenly, often following a stroke or head injury, but it may also develop slowly, as the result of a brain tumor or a progressive neurological disease. The disorder impairs the expression and understanding of language as well as reading and writing. Aphasia may co-occur with speech disorders, such as dysarthria or apraxia of speech, which also result from brain damage."

For the time, John Maclaine was a very down to earth & 'mortal' action hero. They also did pay much more attention to reloading than typical movies from that era. ^_^ Now for those who came to this film following Bruce Willis' role on the show, "Moonlighting", there is an homage to that show here. One of the tropes in the series was that Bruce Willis & Cybil Shepherd's characters would often verbally spar by talking over each other. When John first gets to the tower, he & Holly do exactly that. Very cute. The film was again, realistic compared to films of the time, in terms of the challenges John had to face. The only stunt that still really gets to me is when his Gun-Belt breaks & he's suddenly freefalling down the shaft, falls about 20ft, then catches the lip of the duct with his fingers. Sorry, no, just no. With all that velocity built up, his sweaty fingers would have slipped right off & down Maclaine would have gone. Hans & his Team would have then won! Poor Hans. He was cheated. :-(

@@jenmurrayxo the sequel of this wasn't directed by the same guy but it is as funny as this one. Lethal Weapon launched that series. Kiss Kiss Bang Bang was directed by Shane Black and stars a pre Iron Man RDJ. Batman Returns was the 1992 follow up to Tim Burton's Batman released 3 years later(ironically the same year Ghostbusters 2 was released)

I think Hans Gruber is the only movie villain I ever wanted to see get away haha. Alan Rickman was so perfect and brought the film to another level. Do you watch Brooklyn Nine Nine? The lead character Jake is obsessed with Die Hard. It's so funny if you're a fan of the movie as there are so many Die Hard references throughout the series. This review was super cute and fun (love the hat too lol!)

Thank you! ☺ Such a fun movie! Alan Rickman was awesome!! I saw season 1 of Brooklyn 99 years ago but been meaning to rewatch & now I'll get the references lol 😆👍

It's worth it😂 It's a super funny show and the Die Hard references are endless lol. One of my faves was "You once took a train to Toronto to get a Canadian VHS copy of Die Hard!".. "I heard it had better sound quality!" 🤣 I'm from Toronto and have actually taken a train to NYC... That's a 10hr+ trip one way hahaha You'll definitely enjoy all the references now ☺️

Funny you mention “Towering Inferno.” There is a movie called that that this movie did draw inspiration from.

I saw this the week it released. I liked it so much I saw it two more times the same day, once with my friend, then with him and his girlfriend. This movie redefined action movies, and made Bruce Willis an action star. Before this he was known for comedy, notably a t.v. comedy series called "Moonlighting"

There are 5 Die Hards... With number 2 being another "Christmas Movie". The third is really great (my favourite). The fourth is so-so, and the fifth is not so good. The Lethal weapon series (4 films) are all pretty good Die Hard-like movies, with plenty of action and characters you just get really attached to. You'll love those as well...

Finally got around to seeing your review! DIE HARD is still the greatest action movie ever committed to film. And yes, it really is a Christmas movie. And here's why: from a very basic screenwriting perspective, John McClane would never have come to L.A. and Nakatomi Plaza if it weren't for the Xmas Eve party invite he was sent in the first place. And yes, it takes place on CHRISTMAS EVE! Very happy you presented this review in the film's correct Panavision widescreen ratio!

@@jenmurrayxo There are a bunch more Die Hard movies. 2 and 3 are pretty good but the 4th one, Live Free or Die Hard, is more recent and my favorite.
