Great reaction to this masterpiece. Jack Nicholson is notorious for going off script and making the scene, himself, and the actors around him better in the process. During the "I smell a rat" scene with Leo, Jack went way off script. In an interview, Leo talks about that scene. Leo mentions he was no longer acting because Nicholson was scaring him for real.

Jen, and now my usual comment: Do yourself a favour and what "Infernal Affairs", the original from what "The Departed" is a remake, too. It's a early 2000s Hong Kong movie, and as good if not better that the Scorsese version. And even if you already know the basic story, due to completely different film style and cultural differences, it's still well worth the watch.

I hold that Scorsese's best movie - in a long line of superior films - is "Goodfellas." Yes, "The Departed" is excellent, but there are two other, even better Scorsese movies, both starring Robert De Niro: "Taxi Driver" and "Raging Bull." Both are utterly unforgettable, with transcendent performances by De Niro. "Taxi Driver," especially, is the movie that made De Niro De Niro. Nice commentary by you on this particular movie, and you almost completed an interesting thought I hadn't considered: Leo plays a good guy who has to act bad, Matt plays a bad guy who has to act good, and Nicholson...well, he's a bad guy who is allowed to act bad in the name of doing good. Supposedly. It's fascinating how the allegiances of good and evil are played against each other. Also fascinating: the Jack Nicholson character is based on a real-life criminal who was indeed a real-life FBI informant. The FBI literally let that man get away with murder because he was an informant.

Jack Nicholson’s character is partially based on a real life Boston mobster, Whitey Bulger, who in exchange with being a protected FBI informant by leading to the downfalls of rival gangs, was able to be ignored of all criminal activities such as murder and racketeering for a decade and a half. His FBI handler ensured his activities were ignored by the department until 1995 when he was indicted. Bulger fled and by the mid-2000s was the second-most wanted person on the FBI list (only behind Bin Laden). He was eventually captured and arrested, and died in prison. There is a great film about him called Black Mass (2015) starring Johnny Depp that’s really good, if you’re interested in the story.

An absolutely amazing movie. The story is so well written, but it is the performances that are simply stunning. There’s also a big clue running through the movie, for when you watch it again. There’s an “X” that appears in front of or behind every character that will die.

Love watching you go on the ride for this one. The tension of two characters trying to live secret lives AND smoke one another out is just relentless. The original Infernal Affairs has a better ending. The American remake is almost shot-for-shot identical... but then the US version tacks on Marky Mark showing up at the end to kill Matt Damon's character which kind of ruins the point of the whole movie...

The Departed is a remake of a Hong Kong crime movie Infernal Affairs from 2002, and it brought Martin Scorsese his first Academy Award. Plese react to more of Scorsese's films--you'll be rewarded and begin to recognize his motifs, like the use of popular music on the soundtrack as well as the excessive profanity and violence. Scorsese has had a tremendous influence on modern cinema. Great reaction Jen--always nice to see you.

Freakin amazing movie with an aweeome cast. The twist is one of the best one's I've seen, incredible. Also yes, the Wolverine movies are very good. Gene Hackman is virtually The Wolverine at this point.

I remember going to the theater with no idea what this movie was going to be about, loving every second. Good story telling. The Irishman (2019) is also a good watch. Directed and Produced by Scorsese. Starring Robert De Nero, Joe Pesci, and Al Pacino.

Ha, the first time I watched this movie, I was so confused, but mainly because for the first 15 minutes, I didn’t realise that Matt Damon and Leo were different people. They looked so similar and I just was not following it at all. Then it clicked that they were different characters / actors, but I was already lost because I had it set in my mind that they were the same.

Yeah I almost got whiplash at the elevator scene my first time through. Lol This is one of those movies like Ford v Ferrari where the rest of the movie is so good that the ending still sneaks up every time. If you want to watch more X-Men without all the baggage, I'd suggest X2, X-Men: Days of Future Past, and Logan. Great job, looking great ☺️

@@deluxereissue Yeah I would say the same, he was average imo; whole movie was on the serious side while nicholson was acting funny and cartoonish which simply didn't fit. I've watched lot of Nicholson movies and in my opinion he was way better when he was young, then later he just start to play every role in similar way without creating really distinct characters

Hi Jen!🙂They shot some of the warehouse scenes down the street from my family home in the old Quincy Shipyard. The Massachusetts State Troopers were really known for being corrupt. This is a pretty awesome film! Yeah, it holds up really well for repeat viewing, Jen. Great reactions to your very first viewing of this modern classic!!!!🎬👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽

Growing up, I noticed that there was the expensive actors and their economy alternatives. You know, there was Jack Lemmon and his alternative, Tony Randall. There was Walter Matthau in the movies and his substitute Jack Klugman on TV. In this movie we have the same dynamic at play. The star Matt Damon is here while in a smaller role is the ersatz Mark Wahlberg. - Apologies to Mark, he is a likable actor in his own right, check him out in the movie he made after this, 'Shooter' or in 'Deepwater Horizon'.

Hey Jen, you said you like Martin Scorsese movies. One that is overlooked is his dark comedy called After Hours, it's GREAT. Also, I don't know if you've seen Jojo Rabbit, Only The Brave with Josh Brolin and Miles Tiller, or 12 Strong. All three are GREAT movies and I'd like to see your reaction to those movies. Keep up the good reactions.

I´m so glad you were so focused on the story and not specifically on the violence :) Some random and unsolicited recommendations for Matty D: The Rainmaker, Rounders and of course Good Will Hunting, which you may have already watched off channel. For Scorsese: The Age of Innocence, Cape Fear and the very underrated Bringing Out the Dead. For Leo: What's Eating Gilbert Grape, Revolutionary Road and The Aviator.

The character of Costello is somewhat inspired by real life Irish Boston gangster Whitey Bulger. He was a Boston kingpin, and an FBI informant. He would inform on his criminal competitors in exchange for FBI protection. In 1995, Bulger went on the lam for 16 years, and was eventually caught in 2011. He died in prison in 2018. One loose end: I always wondered about Madolyn's epilog after finding that both of her lovers were dead, one of them in her apartment. She would have needed some serious therapy after the end of this movie.

'The Departed' finally did it for me: previously I saw Leo as this "Titanic-pretty-boy". Talented for sure, but kinda too boyish. As Billy Costigan however, I saw an extremely fierce, desperate and and very brave character and Leo made this believable all the way down.

I don't normally do movie recommendations because so many do, but if you want another film where Jack Nicholson dominates, you can't do better than As Good as it Gets. And if you want another film in the same genre with an amazing cast with all the twists and turns of this one, then look no further than LA Confidential. this was another really fun reaction though...as usual.

Glad to see you loved this movie! Still my favorite Scorsese film. One of my favorite themes of the film is virility being tied to righteous moral values. Throughout the movie, Costello and Sullivan are living the high life as successful, ambitious men that beautiful women can't resist initially. However, both have problems in the bedroom and it eats away at their masculinity in the process. Costigan, despite having the shit end of the stick throughout the movie, is still able to have sex with Madolyn as he's a good person while Sullivan struggles to connect with her as he's been lying about who he is every day. It's heavily implied that Madolyn is actually pregnant with Billy's child as a result of this too. Scorsese always speaks out against toxic masculinity and this film is a surprisingly smart way of looking into it.

What if I told you this was a *remake?* ...And the original is actually *better?* "No way! Better than a *Scorsesee version?* Of a *crime epic?"* See for yourself: "Infernal Affairs" 2002, Andrew Lau (It's been my experience that most people tend to prefer whichever version they saw first, but generally agree, it's a close race either way)

Scorsese: Basically any of the movies he did with De Niro (excepting "New York, New York").....plus "After Hours" (wild 80s dark-comedy-thriller? Not sure how to describe After Hours!). But definitely The King Of Comedy, Cape Fear, Casino, Raging Bull, Taxi Driver, Mean Streets (and only after you've seen all those, then you can watch The Irishman, but not before!). Jack Nicholson, LONG list of classics still to hit: Easy Rider, Carnal Knowledge, The Last Detail, Chinatown, Reds, Terms Of Endearment, Prizzi's Honor, Broadcast News, Witches Of Eastwick, A Few Good Men, About Schmidt, and there are plenty others. Like Nicholson once said: "I don't make movies, kid, I make CLASSICS!" :D (De Niro, same thing, LONG list of classics). For Matt Damon: The Talented Mr. Ripley and for Leo, two of his earliest: "What's Eating Gilbert Grape?" and "This Boy's Life". And for Mark Wahlberg?: BOOGIE NIGHTS!!!!!!! (And for Martin Sheen: Badlands, and Apocalypse Now). Alec Baldwin? 30 Rock! The TV series!
