He wasn't really a jerk, he was the biggest example of someone who gives 'tough love' there could have been. If Billy couldn't handle him, how would he handle Costello and his crew? @@TheRealAhoy Wel,Dignam does tell Sullivan, "I run rat fucks like you,I dont like em!" Besides his awesome intuition there,he might work and had worked with alot of informants and two-faced criminals. This might have rubbed off on him and he might not have had the highest opinion of Billy. Some things arent spelled out so its just to ponder. He coudlve killed Sullivan just for all the shit he caused and to avenge his boss. Saying ots for Billy is sweet but who knows? There is no reason to sell out Billy cause Dignam was not a monster and understood that Bily was a force of good. Still, what Dignam felt about Bily mostly becomes fanfiction.

It was good Colin got popped but the end scene never fit to me,felt like Marky mark fanfiction and a desperate way to quickly wrap the movie up.

You didn't really indicate either way, but the movie strongly suggests the baby is Billy's. Sullivan was having issues earlier (when she tells him it's not a big deal and that men make a bigger deal about it) and the way she tells him "I thought I was the liar."

@@inarar5334 "I don't think she'd say that unless she actually said something to him that was a lie" Well, her not telling him about the affair and acting like everything was fine is itself a lie. A lie by omission is still a lie. In any case, I don't have a strong opinion on this. You might be right. I just think that the movie doesn't "strongly suggest the baby is Billy's". The original was more dramatic, less action and more nuanced. The Departed was dumbed down, but it works better for an American audience. Good movies both, but very different, even when some scenes are are almost the same. The Departed had me thinking “Yupp, American Justice is the corrupt shit heap it’s always known to be”, Infernal Affairs had me thinking about morality itself, and how gray it all is. How we all wish to be someone we can be proud of, even when we do things that are shameful, immoral, or down right evil. The original was also made in a time when Hong Kong was deeply triad run, and the film industry entirely controlled by them, which is why a lot of those era triad movies are considered mob movie treasures, Infernal Affairs being the crown jewel.

Great reaction Addie, I love this movie, this film is a remake of a Hong Kong film called Infernal Affairs (2002) and some fun facts about this movie Scorsese was the only person who warner Bros wanted to direct the film, and he agreed to do it pretty quickly. Warner Bros had bought the rights to Hong Kong thriller Infernal Affairs (2002) and always had Scorsese in mind to direct a remake. When Scorsese read the script he loved it as it reminded him of classic Hollywood genre pictures by people like Robert Aldrich, Sam Fuller, and Don Siegel. Specifically, Scorsese said it reminded him of White Heat - a 1949 film noir directed by Raoul Walsh and starring James Cagney. Production of the film was so long and arduous that even Martin Scorsese was left ill and exhausted from making the film. Scorsese later said, “I call The Departed ‘Moral Ground Zero’. All the characters are killed at the end, and there was no place to go after that. Scorsese had been nominated for 7 Oscars previously, and lost every time. The Departed, though, was the movie where Scorsese finally won. The Departed won Best Picture (the first remake of a foreign film to do so) and Scorsese won Best Director. When Scorsese won the Oscar, it was presented to him by three of his old movie brat pals in Steven Spielberg, George Lucas, and Francis Ford Coppola. The lead role of Billy Costigan is played by Leonardo DiCaprio, in one of his most acclaimed roles. When the studio bought the rights to Infernal Affairs, however, they had another famous actor in mind for the role. The studio originally planned for Costigan to be played by Tom Cruise. And the main female character in the movie is Madolyn, who has relationships with both Sullivan and Costigan. She’s played by Vera Farmiga but Scorsese originally had a shortlist of 4 big stars to play Madolyn: Kate Winslet, Emily Blunt, Hilary Swank and Jennifer Aniston. One of the most popular and acclaimed moments in The Departed is when Costello is talking to Costigan about the rat, and questions if it could be Costigan himself. Costello pulls out a gun and points it in Costigan’s face. That wasn’t in the script - Nicholson improvised it, and DiCaprio wasn’t expecting it. Then Costello burns a drawing in front of him with a lighter - this was also not scripted. Nicholson also improvised the, “I got this rat. This gnawing, teething f***ing rat,” line. Keep up the amazing work.

I want to share with you some curious facts: * Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt were considered for the main roles of Costigan and Sullivan, while Al Pacino was considered for the role of Costello. ° The film got 5 nominations from the Academy and it only got 4 victories: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Film Editing and Best Adapted Screenplay, while the other was for Mark Wahlberg as Best Supporting Actor. He was defeated by Alan Arkin in "Little Miss Sunshine".

Jack Nicholson won the best actor Oscar for 'As Good As It Gets' - you should watch it, it's a romcom. It will make you love him.

Yes, he's definitely channeling his character from "The Talented Mr. Ripley" here (another one for Addie to eventually watch). It's another movie where the bad guys are more likable than the good guys (Martin Sheen being the only genuinely likable good guy).

The original Hong Kong version, "Infernal Affairs" is just as good if not better. Its much more of a psychological thriller, of 2 people working on opposite sides as undercovers in Hong Kong's underground mafia verses the Police. It stars the 2 biggest Hong Kong actors that never made it to the US(Chow Yong Fat or Jackie Chan)... Andy Lau as Matt Damon's character and Tony Leung as Leo's character... 2 huge stars... Even though most western audiences probably never heard of them.

This was indeed a rare occasion where Addie watched the top *_3_* vote-getters in one of her Patreon polls ("The Godfather" was #1, "The Wolf of Wall Street" was #2). I guess she deemed that it also got enough votes for her to watch it. 😎

Leos death is arguably one of the best deaths ever in all of cinematic history & its also the reason i fell in love with this movie afterwards especially because i thought it was literally just gonna end after Jack Nicholsons death scene which was honestly anticlimactic & honestly kinda boring & plus they set it up to make it feel like its the last chapter in the entire movie... just to give us another amazing 20 more mins of twists and legendary deaths & acting❤️ i absolutely love the way they killed off the main character in this!!!! Its the greatest part of the film especially cuz its Leo of all ppl lolz I honestly found Leo annoying back when i watched him growing up in the 90's even tho hes never made a bad film in his entire career or ever under acted cuz hes the epitome of acting but he definitely won me over in the 00's wit his every single role he did!!!!! He always has the best death scenes in all his movies but this one definitely takes the cake by far!!!!! Btw...Dignam is actually Franks real blood son in this film!!! Its set up to make u think hes just getting revenge for his fellow State Patrol detectives but hes actually getting revenge for his father !!!! Hence why he already knew everything about everyone & why the final line out out of Sullivans mouth before he killed him was asking him why he had no sons!!!!! Dignam was the ultimate mole & villain & unfortunately hes the only survivor in the film out of all the main characters!!! This the only Scorcese movie that got a best picture Oscar & I definitely see why cuz the script is perfect!!!

The only thing I would have changed would be to have two moles fighting - as opposed to a single rat - in the final scene.

My usual comment to this movie: It's not bad, in fact it's a very good movie (though IMO not amongst the best Scorsese did). But everyone should watch the original version "Infernal Affairs" from Hong Kong, it at least as good if not better than Scorseses remake.
